ORNL’s Reticle Compensating Rifle Barrel Reference Sensor
This is cool:
The fiber-optic laser-based sensor system precisely measures the deflection of the barrel relative to the sight and automatically adjusts the crosshairs to match the true position of the barrel.

Strategery
On fighting gun control:
The strategy here is sound. Overwhelm the opposition, and tire them out. Make them fight on so many fronts they spread themselves thin. We have an inherent advantage here they lack.
Good plan, especially when you consider pro-gun folks tend to out number anti-gun folks hundreds or thousands to one.

That’s the plan?
In the mornings on the drive in, I listen to the local affiliate of the vast right wing conspiracy for traffic, news and weather. Had to run some errands yesterday afternoon and my radio was on that station so I caught about five minutes of Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh was basically telling his audience to get ready for a tasty, tasty turd sandwich. He said something like he knew Trump and Huckabee and Romney all kinda sucked. But, you should hold your nose and forget your principles, and vote for them anyway because Obama is, apparently, slightly worse. No thanks.
Romney is so full of suck and fail I can’t begin to describe the suck and the fail.
Huckabee thinks we should be indoctrinated at gun point.
And Trump is a joke. Who supports the Kelo decision 100%. Of course he does, he’s the type of rich developer to benefit from it.
This is your plan? Really?
Like I sad, work on it.

Speaking of chicks* and guns
Some idiot named Eric Heyl says that NRA’s efforts at getting women involved in shooting are misguided because women should be in the kitchen making me a sammich. No, really. He also says the industry isn’t going to be successful in drawing them and actually uses the phrase tap that.
Some of the girly gun bloggers take him to task for being a sexist asshat. This must be a shock to him since you girls shouldn’t be blogging about guns. But I digress.
Other than being misogynistic moron, he also happens to be wrong and misleading in his premise. Saying that NRA’s push to involve women is failing because only 20% show at the convention is a stupid measure. And anyone with access to google could have figured out pretty quickly that women are the fastest growing gun owning demographic.
* Yeah, that’s right. I used the word chicks when talking about sexism.

Never heard of it
Seen at Joe’s:
Vice says more than 350 lawsuits have been filed after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in District of Columbia v Heller in 2008 that the Second Amendment allows an individual to possess a gun in his or her home for self-defense.
Vice says none of the previous suits has been successful because courts don’t want guns going to dangerous people.
He’s never heard of Otis McDonald (and a few other cases). Lying or stupid?

More Krauthammer on guns
In a follow up to this, reader Tony says maybe he’s evolving:
It is true that with far stricter gun laws, Cho Seung Hui might have had a harder time getting the weapons and ammunition needed to kill so relentlessly. Nonetheless, we should have no illusions about what laws can do. There are other ways to kill in large numbers, as Timothy McVeigh demonstrated. Determined killers will obtain guns no matter how strict the laws. And stricter controls could also keep guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens using them in self-defense. The psychotic mass murder is rare; the armed household burglary is not.
I guess that is progress from someone who once advocated a total ban on gun ownership and confiscation.

Heh: Financial columnists seem to be paying attention to gun companies these days, despite assurances from Josh Sugarmann the industry has been in decline.
The myth of the declining gun industry. Meanwhile, the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence is pushing a report saying that governments can get all those gun regs they want by refusing to buy police weapons from manufacturers who do not comply. Trouble is, the law enforcement market is pretty small.

Sold em off when they got their new S&Ws. AIMsurplus.com was selling the 3rd gen .40S&W Glock 22s for around $350 with Detroit Police Department engraved on the slide. I almost got one before I reminded myself I dont particularly like glocks nor do I like the .40S&W

Gosh, I don’t know what to say
I’ve never really had an anti-gun person locally. And it makes me all warm inside to see one up and close:
Standing in front of Hodges Library today, the newly elected University of Tennessee student president said allowing employees there to carry guns would make him and other students feel unsafe.
“I don’t want to be trying to pursue an education in an unsafe place,” Student Government Association President Ross Rowland said after the news conference he held on the plaza.
Speaking on behalf of the student body, Rowland told reporters, administrators and passersby they support UT’s position to block legislation that would allow faculty and staff with weapons licenses and training to carry guns on campus.
And the KNS has a poll noting that, well, his side is losing. Of course it is.
Poll via Glenn, who notes we should remember this come funding time.
Update: The University of Tennessee has taken a position opposing freedom and safety. From now on, all of my alumni letters asking for cash will be thrown in the trash.

ViewSonic G Tablet: More stuff
I mentioned I got the ViewSonic G Tablet a bit back. My initial review is here. I’m still digging it. It’s much improved now. Before, I thought the hardware was fine but the software was lacking. Well, nerds on the internet to the rescue. Following the instructions here, I rooted it. Installed clockworkmod to repartition the device and then installed Vegan Tab, a much better and faster operating system for a tablet than the proprietary touch n go or whatever Viewsonic installed.
Installing VeganTab gets you access to more of the default google apps, which for some reason Veiwsonic thought weren’t worth putting on there, like gchat and google voice. Also, though there’s a trick to it, it gets you access to the regular android market. Highly recommend changing the software if you want to use it fully.
Make sure you follow the instructions carefully. I used the wrong version of clockworkmod and bricked the tablet. Fortunately, I’m not the only one to brick a droid and unbricked it using the posts here and here.
Now, it works much better. No more hideous home screen and no more bloatware.
The only real con is that I wish the navigation buttons would light up. I use it in the dark some and they’re hard to see. Fortunately, VeganTab puts the home and back buttons on the screen for you. But lighted buttons would be nice.
Otherwise, I’m a fan. Zippy web browsing. Good for kindle books. Great kids’ toy. I’m a fan of the ViewSonic G Tablet.

John Snow has some criticisms:
Why on earth youd trust your life to a single-shot is beyond me. Theres also the problem that if you pulled this out and pointed it at a bad guy, he wouldnt even know enough to be scared.
Bob Boyd has a rebuttal.
I think the Palm Pistol is interesting. It has several advantages and disadvantages. I’m not sure that not looking like a gun is one or the other. But I would not bet that the ATF won’t change it’s mind on its classification as a pistol.

Tax time
I used to do a series on happy fun tax facts during tax time. But I stopped, it got too depressing. And those numbers are old now. But a few items on taxes:
Is the tax code void on vagueness? Good question, really. When I last checked, the code was bloated:
The Internal Revenue Code consists of approximately 1,395,000 words.
There are 693 sections of the Internal Revenue Code that are applicable to individual taxpayers, 1,501 sections applicable to businesses, and 445 sections applicable to tax-exempt organizations, employee plans, and governments.
As of June 2000, the Treasury Department had issued almost 20,000 pages of regulations containing over 8 million words.
I’m sure there is plenty of vagueness in that. Meanwhile, the IRS is a bully and will threaten to withhold your pass port.
People ask me how I would fix the tax code. Simple, really. A two step plan:
No more payroll deductions for taxes. You take home what you earn and every month, you write a check to the government. This will have the added benefit of exposing most folks to the complexity of the stupid laws and, you know, will provide to them the real amount of money taxes cost them. Most folks think in terms of their net pay, not gross.
It will be a crime punishable by death for a senator or congressmonkey to pay a third party to do their taxes. They will be required by law to do their own tax returns.

Your brain is your safety
Irony:
The 56-year-old man from Shalimar was trying to exchange or get rid of his Ruger 380 automatic pistol because it did not have a safety, said Okaloosa County Sheriffs Office spokeswoman Michele Nicholson.
The man was attempting to demonstrate his concerns about the gun about 12:30 p.m. when it discharged. The man was hit in his left hand.
Here’s a good safety tip: watch where you point and keep your finger off the trigger.

NYC Quick Notes
The most interesting part of the trip was when I almost stabbed somebody. We were on the subway (I hate being underground, btw. It sorta weirds me out.) and a disheveled looking guy, who looks nervous and unclean, boards at the last minute. Once the door shuts, he starts screaming to the top of his lungs to the people in the car about about something, some sort of pre-robbery speech. Then says it’s a robbery and pulls out his hand and it’s in a brown paper bag. I was a bit surprised that I stayed calm but I did. I discretely pulled my Cold Steel AK47 out of my pocket and stood between the guy and my wife evaluating what I was going to do and when. It was a pretty intense few seconds. Then the robber decides to inform us that he’s not a robber and it’s actually some sort of scare-tactic fundraising pitch for a homeless shelter. In hindsight, I was glad (and he was lucky) that he got the point quickly. I didn’t give him any money. But did look at him like he was stupid for the rest of the ride.
In NYC, the white and yellow lines on the roads are just kind of general guides not to be taken seriously.
The place was much cleaner than I remember. Some parts were filthy with trash stacked up in alleyways. But mostly clean.
Had some of the best Chinese food ever at a hole in the wall called Wing Wong’s in Chinatown.
For breakfast, I had smoked sable at a Jewish deli, served by an Iraqi. Don’t see that every day.
On the way back, the TSA failed to notice I had the knife in my bag. Or my TacPen. Or my wife’s large can of FoxOC. I forgot the knife was in my carry on and the Mrs. forgot to take her spray out before we got to the airport. Don’t you feel safer?
I saw Wyatt Cenac and Mitt Romney.
Near 10 years later and the site of the World Trade Center is a hole in the ground. So sad.

I step away for a couple of days
And apparently the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership has a rough week. They were talking to the White House gun advisor and then:
One area in which Croley has shown less interest, according to several people who have spoken with him about the issue, is restricting the large-volume ammunition magazines that allowed the Tucson shooter to keep firing. When Paul Helmke, director of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, broached the subject during the March 15 gathering with Croley, officials promptly adjourned the meeting.
Good. That’s how you should treat folks who oppose your rights. Then, they release this hideous ad on assault clips.
They are desperate. And I apparently should not blog more often.
