Online Bachelor's Degree: The Curriculum of a Bachelor's Degree
Typically, a student earning a bachelor's degree can expect to take a "core" of classes. The core is usually comprised of classes in the Humanities, Mathematics: 1 or 2 courses, Physical and Life Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences in order to provide a solid, general set of knowledge. Other requires courses may include basic skills courses, such as English and Writing, or a computer technology and competency course.
Beyond the core, bachelor's degree students must fulfill the requirements of a major, such as Criminal Justice or Nursing. A major is designed to focus a student's academic pursuits, and provides a strong foundation of knowledge within a specific field or discipline. Students may choose to double-major, to pursue two specializations. The benefit of double-major is that the two concentrations may complement each other, giving the student a wide scope of knowledge within his or her specialization. Double-majors may earn degrees with titles like Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Women's Studies or a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Economics. It is important to note, however, that double-majors do not have to be related disciplines. You could double major in Sociology and Mathematics; however, the requirements may be difficult to accomplish.
Some schools allow for students to minor in a subject. A minor course of study does not have to relate to the major course of study. A student may earn a Bachelor in Arts in History with a minor in Legal Studies, or a Bachelor in Science in Biology with a minor in Genetics.
