i had a dream last night that i was at some nondescript concert and after the show was over a friend said hey i'm going backstage do you want to come? i said "why? who is back there?" he said very matter-of-factly "Bowie, Dylan, Serge Gainsbourg, and Mick Jagger..." ha! well, i followed him, and we came to a hallway with those old school dressing room doors with the stars on them and they were labeled "Mr. Dylan", "Mr. Bowie" and so on... my friend said "you have to pick one..." to which i replied "you have got to be kidding!?!" nope, he was serious... i was so pissed at first, but then i suddenly realized that i was about to meet one of the most important people in my life that i didn't already know! all of the sudden, somehow i found myself in 1970's david bowies' dressing room (in real life i would've strolled right over to dylan's door... but this was a dream) i was only allowed to (or only could) talk about fashion... sheesh, did i pick the right guy! dylan is almost as big of a fashion icon to me as a musical icon, but i have to admit that bowie's fashion is far more interesting, if not as personally compelling to me. he gave me several suits (again pretty good thing it wasn't little mr dyan or this really would have been a lesson in frustration) and talked with me about how to effortlessly rock formal attire without looking like you are trying too hard (i imagine mr. gainsbourg's insight on this topic would have been very illuminating as well!) and then he invited wifey and i to dinner at his house (iman was cooking!). CUT, CUT, CUT! cue reality... elodie is crying, 7am echo park bedroom, time to get up... back to work juke nobody is really that cool anymore.
what the hell happened to our rock stars? who are these jokers? as my dad would say... "they don't make em like they used to" well there is one group
i was thinking of my buddy east side bride while making this post
every month I make a compilation of the songs in heavy rotation at my house (or in this case in my car!). I have been doing this since forever for my friends and I thought I would offer it to you guys as well (very limited edition). Put your name and e-mail address in the comments below and e-mail me your mailing address HERE & I will send it to the first 10 people via the good old fashioned USPS free of charge. Here is what made the cut this month. (please support these artists)
last saturday i went to new york to play records in williamsburg at a party for brooklyn bride. it was a ton of fun! a bunch of my favorite friends came through (and got to meet elodie!). I got to meet some of my east coast clients, some pen pals, and a bunch of couples that could be future clients! i especially enjoyed finally meeting Van (Brooklyn Bride) Jillian (100 Layer Cake) and Xochitl (Always a Bridesmaid) other highlights of the trip included staying at The Ace, meeting Joanna (Cup of Jo) and the highline finally opened!
I've been in NY for about a week now and things have been hectic! I played this, met with her, her, them (this is gonna be HUGE!) these guys, these guys, and checked out this so I haven't had much time for posts. I have been meaning to put this DJ mix up for awhile now so here we go. This is from Valentines day at a club called Havana in Seattle. This is part 1 (of 4) so check back for the other three over the coming week or so. This was originally 2 one hour sets, due to the size, part 1 is half of the first set which consists of some 80's funk / soul / hip hop this was early in the night so it is mainly warm up, nothing too fussy just a live recording, and as I always say this is NOT a wedding mix, this is for fun! DIY girls, you can download all of these and play them at your reception if you like, not a really crazy danceparty mix but a heck of a lot better than the ipod! enjoy.
Dana & Hunter are the kind of people who, when you see them together, you immediately know they are meant to be together. They have a bunch of hilarious friends (who really know how to dance!) and very enthusiastic families. This is a recipe for success when you are throwing a wedding.
They had a very sweet outdoor ceremony where a close friend married them, and he played acoustic guitar and sang a beautiful song that he wrote, (dana is this song out there in the world?) while circling the guests (ok it sounds kinda corny but he was so enigmatic and the song was so lovely that it really came off charming and lovely) anyway this all took place in a lovely location right near Runyon Canyon (one of many amazing reasons to live in Los Angeles)
The best thing about this wedding was everyone had a BLAST! You can just see it in the pictures... Everyone was laughing/crying/laughing all day/night! it was a real treat to witness. There was some technical problem at the venue and I couldn't play records for the cocktail hour & dinner so I had the rare opportunity to be a guest, and what a perfect wedding this was to be a guest at! Here is some evidence...
this is a video that our friends at Digital Princess made before the wedding and it received a standing ovation! In fact, it was so well liked, that they played it twice!
Then around 9:30 they moved the whole affair upstairs and there was another rare-ish situation. Usually people ask me to play for 4-5 hours and half of that gets eaten up at cocktail hour and dinner and then I have like an hour and a half to go crazy and by the time I really get loose it's over.... They had reserved the venue until 2am and it was really nice to stretch out, and play a bunch of records from a lot of different time periods and genres... There was a whole 80's roller rink set, a new school vs. old school hip hop set, Motown soul/funk mix, Dolly Parton, Nirvana, Beastie Boys, (you name it, I played it!) there was even a couple breakdancers in the house so I got to play some dusty old B-Boy records!
I really had a blast... It was one of those nights where I felt like I could do no wrong, usually this has very little to do with me, and this was no exception! EVERYONE (I literally mean EVERYONE) danced ALL night. It was incredible! No matter what I played people stuck with me. Writing this now I just realized what it is... When your clients are creative people, they are bound to have creative friends and family (Dana & Hunter just have a lot more than most!) but if you add an amazing sense of humor to that creativity the results look like this. Looks fun huh?!
