Kenny Kim PhotoVenture III – Emilia & Romagna, Tuscany & Liguria Region (March 14-20, 2011)

Mark your calendar for March 14-20,2011. On this journey, we will start from Florence and head towards west to visit Tuscany region of Pisa, Lucca, and Liguria region of Cinque Terre and other beautiful coast places (Some say that Cinque Terre is the most beautiful place in Italy). Then we will march up to one of the richest and developed regions in Europe called Emilia – Romagna. It has one of the oldest universities in the Western World and is filled with numerous Renaissance cities such as Modena, Parma, Ferrara and Bologna. If you are a wine, food, fast cars and art lover, this region covers it all. We will have two photoshoot sessions: one with model bride/groom & another an engagement session – giving us chance to add some great images for our portfolio and few classroom times to learn more about our business. Kenny Kim will go over his workflow, networking & marketing tips and share some of his insights on how he approaches the wedding day as well as other topics related to weddings.

So expect to see various treasures Italy has to offer. Our Italian tour guide Max Brunelli has planned a wonderful tour and excursions. Arrive with excitement and leave with memories & friendships that you will cherish for years to come. Participate in teaching & learning times organized by Kenny as well as other attendees. Best of all, get ready to have some fun – besides, there is no better way to spend your tax write-off!

Hello everyone – I have been MIA on my blog for a long time. I thought month of December will be a time to catch up but now I’m realizing that this month is almost over also! I am so thankful for 2010 and all the wonderful opportunities and great people that I got to meet along the way. I wanted to quickly write a note here to wish everyone a warm and safe Christmas and New Year. I sent out an eCard this morning to many of my friends and funny thing happened – I got Automated Reply back from just about every single person I wrote to. It is a good reminder that we need to take time off from our work and spend this time with people that are important in your life. I used the photo from Venice as my eCard but I actually had couple of other possible candidates which I wanted to share all of them here. I got this ( wish you were here ) idea while flipping through the United Hemisphere magazine. I have been fortunate to travel to many locations this year and every time I saw something breathtaking, I always said to myself that others were here to enjoy the moment with me. So hopefully I can share these moments with you through these eCards:

Last year I traveled to Tanzania with Thirst Relief to document photos for their organization. It was trip that I will never forget and this past week, I had an opportunity to go on another unforgettable trip – this time to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. As we most of you all know, Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010 that nearly destroyed the entire capital city of Haiti in Port-Au-Prince. Many already-established organizations around the globe stepped up to help the Haitians recover from this tragedy. Some organizations were created in response to this disaster. One of those NGO was Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago and Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church in Seattle. These two individuals believed that the hope of any country that has been hit with natural disaster should come from their own community and by empowering the local churches within that disaster area, you empower the local people within that community internally. My college friend, Thomas Kim was hired by them to be the executive director for this project. Since this past March, we have been trying to organize a time where we can go out there together to document photos to help convey the message to people back home in the U.S.

We were finally able to pencil out a week to make this trip possible. I also teamed with my other photographer buddy Kenny Nakai (acting as a videographer) to travel 2000 miles down to the Caribbean to meet up with Thomas who has already there for two weeks.

To be honest, I was a bit hesitant to go down there at first because it had been over 8 months since the disaster. I thought to myself that there would be nothing left to document since all the debris and rubble have been surely cleaned up by now. Boy was I wrong! The country looked like it was hit by an earthquake last week! During our four days in the heart of Haiti, Thomas, Kenny Nakai and I, along with Jacque & Johny (the local pastors that acted as our guide) traveled to different parts of Port-Au-Prince and visited various ministries and local groups. While Thomas was in meetings, Kenny and I got to document the condition of Haiti. Later on this year, we plan to come out with a book and a video presentation which Churches Helping Churches will be using to help convey the message of Haiti to the people here in the U.S.

Here are some photos that I captured during my time in Haiti. For sake of download time, I have chosen to put about 20 photos here on my blog. To view my entire 80+ images, please visit my facebook gallery. I have mentioned this before, but going on trips like this benefits in both ways. I am thankful that I can give my time and services to better help this country. But more than that, I return a better person learning so much more from their Haitians about various life lessons. I’m so thankful that I got to go on this trip and I hope you can experience what I saw through these photos.

I would love to hear your thoughts, comments and questions after viewing these images. May you continue to pray for Haiti and the people there. Thank you.

Almost all the buildings had some type of structural damages from the earthquake that has not been fixed or altered since January. It looked like the quake happened last week.

I got this idea while perusing through United’s monthly Hemispheres magazine. Every issue there is an article called: “Three Perfect Days: (Fill in the city name)” that highlights a certain city around the world. It maps out (their suggestion on) how to best view the city in three days. Ironically I got to spend three full days in Seoul so I decided to officially name this gallery just that.

This journey and collection of photos would not have been possible without the help of my good friends and family members. I went to Seoul without planning anything and with no expectation of what to see. I ended up walking away filled with memories, tasting delicious cuisines, and a yearning to return to a place where my heritage comes from.

It was a delightful trip and one I will not forget. In another gallery I will highlight my visit to my hometown of Gwangju, Korea. But for now, here are some images from Seoul and some caption to follow.

I hope you enjoy these images and would love to hear your thoughts and comments on them. More photos can be viewed on my facebook gallery page.

It’s a Small World After All: A New York Love Story of Tina & Richard

It wasn’t Disneyland, but it was definitely one of those small world stories.

Richard and Tina had been planning a summer wedding at the famous New York Botanical Gardens in Brooklyn, NY. Tina began researching wedding photographers and at the suggestion of a friend, she looked up my website. When she noticed my studio was based in Chicago, she jokingly asked her fiancé if he knew me – given he was also from Chicago. When Richard shot back “Sure, I grew up with him,” she laughed off his joke and went on her merry way of planning their wedding. And I’m sure you know where this story is going…

We did grow up together! We attended the same church together for years but when high school ended, we unfortunately lost touch. I was photographing another wedding last year when I ran into Richard’s parents. They informed me Richard was dating a young woman and was going to be getting married soon. A few weeks later Richard and Tina contracted me to photograph their wedding day!

I love small world stories like that and we had a great time laughing about just HOW small the world really is. What’s even more remarkable is that two amazing people like Richard and Tina found each other. I had always respected Richard. He is a true gentleman and nothing but class. Tina is just the perfect compliment to his demeanor and I couldn’t be happier for them.

This New York Botanical Garden wedding turned out to be one of the most charming weddings I’ve ever had the honor of photographing, and how could it not be? It was coordinated and catered by the amazing Abigail Kirsch Events – one of the absolute finest wedding coordinators in New York City! And the hot, humid weather New York had been experiencing seemed to take a brief hiatus – just for the day – so that Tina and Richard, their family, friends and honored guests, could all enjoy a nice, warm summer wedding in the garden.

I also like to thank Nicole Chan for coming to assist me that day all the way from Boston! Here are some photos from this perfect wedding day (For more photos, visit their Facebook Gallery):
