World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Review

By Jeremiah Leif Johnson | PC Reviews | Dec 30, 2010 10:20 AM | Comment

This is the way the end of the world began: not with a whimper, but a bang. After six years of expansions and level increases, the two oldest continents in the World of Warcraft faded into pale, forgotten shadows of their former glory -- rarely visited, save for the obligatory auction house check-in. The multitude of quests suffered from over-familiarity and repetition, visuals that awed in 2004 seemed outdated, and Blizzard had lost one of its greatest lore assets with the death of the Lich King. It was time, in short, for a change of cataclysmic proportions. Read More »

Final Fantasy: It Was the Best of Games, It Was the Worst of Minigames

By Evan Hoovler | Humor | Dec 29, 2010 10:10 AM | Comment

It's amazing how the developers of the Final Fantasy titles can make such breathtaking, in-depth role-playing games, yet utterly fail at making halfway-decent minigames. Then again, it kind of makes sense: If I asked Pablo Picasso to paint a street sign, I'd probably end up with a pretty useless street sign. So why put awful minigames inside a beautifully constructed game? Pablo Picasso never hid horribly rendered street signs inside his classic works of art. After decades of fighting elementals for crystals on the moon, I have determined that Final Fantasy's awful minigames always fall into one of four categories. Read More »

The Underachiever #14: Pac-Man Championship Edition DX

By Ryan Kuo | Xbox 360 Articles | Dec 28, 2010 10:50 AM | Comment

Like its predecessor, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX brands achievements right onto the surface. If you earn an achievement, you find its icon branded into a glowing grid in the post-game recap. This is a big improvement over the Xbox dashboard pop-up, which blackens and blocks the screen with a big gray box. It lets you see the Pac-Man CE DX achievements as an inseparable part of the game. A Whole New World (of Warcraft) #5: Lost in Queue

By Jeremiah Leif Johnson | PC Articles | Dec 27, 2010 10:45 AM | Comment

Almost two weeks have passed since my mage hit level 85 in the wake of Cataclysm's release, and he still doesn't have a single epic-quality item on him. I'm cool with this. It's certainly not because of a lack of trying; on the contrary, I've come dangerously close to missing several deadlines on account of my newfound semi-addiction to World of Warcraft, and I've wasted several hours in normal and heroic dungeons that any other responsible writer would have spent writing. I happily blame Cataclysm's new challenging five-man dungeons for this. While Cataclysm's leveling experience is largely easier than any previous expansion, its endgame dungeons make you work for the best gear, and provide a challenge that's been missing for a couple of years now.
