Clone Chronicles Weekly College Basketball Wrap Up: 2011 #7

This is Kemba Walker. If you don't know who he is, learn about it tonight.

More photos » Jessica Hill - AP

This is Kemba Walker. If you don't know who he is, learn about it tonight.

After a long layoff from finals week for most of college basketball, there was yet another layoff this past week for the Christmas holiday.  Still, however, we saw some interesting results this week: Jacksonville over Florida 71-68 in OT, USC over Tennessee 65-64, Washington St over Baylor 77-71. Even Drake won a basketball game this week (over Chicago State).

But what this upcoming week is really all about is wrapping non-conference play for many teams, and/or starting up conference play for many others. College basketball is going to turn it up a couple of notches and get REAL serious! Or something like that at least...

Iowa State Recap:

Overall a pretty slow week. Iowa State downed Chicago State last Tuesday 104-63. In that game, DG scored 18 points, and is now #25 on the all time career scoring list for Iowa State. It was another game in which everybody played and scored. You just don't gain a lot when you play arguably the worst D1 team, but it is what it is.

This coming week, they play @Virginia on Thursday, in what will be their first road game outside the state of Iowa all season. Virginia has been up and down this season, having wins @Minnesota and @VA Tech, but also having losses against @Stanford, Wichita St., (and most recently) Seattle.

Ken Pomeroy Ratings:

This week: #56, projected to go 19-12 (6-10).
Last week: #65, projected to go 19-12 (6-10).

Being ranked #56 is definitley an upgrade from the beginning of the season when we started in the 140s and 150s. If it held, we'd be a bubble NIT team, but a lot of that will be determined by how the Cyclones do in the conference season, as their non-conference schedule is ranked #320 (there are 347 D1 college basketball teams).

Sitting Down With The Enemy: Virginia

Virginia coach Tony Bennett is looking to shrug off the homecourt blues against the Iowa State Cyclones.

Christmas break is over for the Iowa State men's basketball team - they're back in Ames, getting ready for their matchup with Virginia on December 30th. Since SBNation has a brand spankin' new Virginia blog - Streaking The Lawn - I figured we might as well let  Brian, the head honcho, tell us what's up with Cavalier basketball.

1.      Seattle, WTF?

Wait a second. I thought when we agreed to do this exchange, we agreed that this topic was off limits. Seriously though, there’s no real explanation for this game. We are a freshman-dominated team, and with that comes immensely inconsistent play. Our All-ACC candidate Mike Scott was coming off orthoscopic surgery less than a week prior and our starting forward was still out with a fractured fibula, which basically left a bunch of healthy freshmen on the court playing their last game before winter break. Before the game, a number of players tweeted along the lines of, "One more game, then break!" – which tells me that they weren’t exactly focused on this team. I don’t expect the same on Thursday night. Also, shooting 30.2% field goals and 10% (2-20) 3-pointers will not help your cause.

More after the jump....

Iowa State 104, Chicago State 63: The Bloodbath was Televised

Iowa State demolishes Chicago State, 104-63.

Iowa State demolishes Chicago State, 104-63.

Not much to be broken down from this one - Chicago State never had a chance, and Iowa State probably could have won by 60 if they really, really wanted to. It's off until December 30th. Happy Holidays.

Chicago (It Is Not A) State Preview

The best part about playing against teams like Kennesaw State and Chicago State is just pointing out the fact that neither Kennesaw nor Chicago is a state. As far as the competitiveness in the games go, that is another story, but for good reason.

Chicago State will come to Hilton tonight with a 3-10 record, and ranked 343rd out of 345 by Ken Pomeroy as far as teams go (ISU is ranked 65th). There's no dancing around it: Chicago State is just not a very good team. Only thing I worry about is our players thinking about what they will be doing over break, and playing yet another sloppy game. I hope they can take care of business and then enjoy a little break.

If ISU plays to their capabilities, ISU can win by 30+ points. If they jack around too much and don't come out sharp, then maybe 15-20.

Game tips off at 7pm CST at Hilton, and is on Mediacom in Central Iowa, maybe in other parts of the state as well, not really sure. Otherwise, you have to rely on the voices of Walters and Heft to get through this one.
