Thanks, Unthanks

In 2010, The Unthanks not only performed the music of Robert Wyatt and Antony & The Johnsons at the Union Chapel in London; they starred at the Northumberland Singing Weekend. Their versatility, curiosity and ability know no boundaries. Speaking of northern England, did you know that Newcastle and Sunderland were second only to London in providing men for Britain's Royal Navy during the French Wars from 1793 to 1806? But instead of sailing joyfully into the Battle of Trafalgar, many of the northern English recruits violently resisted the call to arms and so had to be press ganged into service. Before being distributed to the various warships, the men were assembled on so-called pressing tenders, which were, essentially, floating prisons.

So, when The Unthanks sing "Here's the Tender Coming" it's got nothing to do with tenderness, or Christmas or goodwill to all men in the New Year. But this is marvellous singing, poignant history and transcendent music. Thanks, Unthanks.

Cassiopeia over Cassidy's hill

Cassiopeia was over
Cassidy's hanging hill,
I looked and three whin bushes rode across
The horizon — The Three Wise Kings.

Frosty greeting

Idyllic life in the countryside comes with the warning that fearsome beasts roam beyond the horizon.

Fruit of the earth

cabbage.jpg

When combined with bacon and potatoes, green cabbage completes a dinner fit for royalty. And then there's another ingredient, one that can be obtained only by those fortunate enough to experience the hospitality that hallmarks the Rainy Day homestead. But this is so ineffable that it can never be described in mere words. One has to be there. And we were.

Low-fat cat in Brussels

cat.jpg

As we made our way to St. Michael Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Michel / Sint-Michiels Kathedraal) in Brussels, we encountered the cat. But instead of being the clichéd fat kind, this one was lean with nose and ears rubbed dark by pilgrims hoping for a succulent consultancy or a juicy sinecure, these being the modern indulgences granted by the city's all-powerful Commissioners.

When Pellegrino met Missoni

It was an inspired moment when the producers of S. Pellegrino met up with the Missoni design team. The result was fashion in a bottle. Such are the joys.

Team work

It's been a great winter for our indefatigable ensemble of skydiving frogs. Here, they perform a very tricky manoeuvre that involves framing a 291-metre-high tower whilst descending a tree. Do not try this at home, please!
