Stanford Graduates Release Pulse, A Must-Have News App For The iPad

Akshay Kothari and Ankit Gupta, two Stanford grads who signed up for the Launch Pad class at the University’s Institute of Design (aka d.school), could have hardly chosen a better path to try their hands at startup life. The pair has gone from idea to a (very cool) digital news app for the iPad in just 5 weeks, and they’re just getting started.

The application, called Pulse, is essentially a visually attractive RSS-based news aggregator. On sale for $3.99 (iTunes link), the app is aimed to please both hardcore RSS reader users and people who are willing to pay top dollars for single publication apps.

Pulse’s home screen renders stories from multiple sources on a dynamic mosaic interface. Swipe up and down to see headlines from various sources, and right and left to browse stories from a particular source (thanks for featuring TechCrunch in the demo video, guys).

Tapping on a story takes you to a text view of the article, and lets you switch to a Web view simply by toggling the appropriate button. You can also easily share articles with your friends on Facebook and Twitter or by e-mailing a link to the article. As you can tell from the video embedded below, Pulse works well in both Portrait and Landscape view.

We should note that streaming video in-app is not yet supported due to stability issues, but the makers promise that the next update will come with support for embedded video playing.

Big plus: Pulse can integrate feeds from your Google Reader.

Big minus: you can only add 20 RSS feeds to the reader (up from 10 at launch).

Nevertheless, a must-have (or at the very least, a must-try) app if you have an iPad.

Do not despair if you do not: Kothari and Gupta will expand Pulse to other platforms ‘very soon’, starting with the iPhone.

Sweet …. only if I had an iPad! Why not release an iPhone version as well?
On the similar thought, why Google hasn't done this for Google news yet?

  • Craig

20 RSS Feeds for $3.99. Should have launched at $0.99 until the app allows 100+ feeds

  • http://twitter.com/GetAdam @GetAdam

Cool, but I'm waiting for Reeder for iPad.

  • Deloren

    looks pretty neat…

  • Scott

Nice one! This would be the equivalent web app: Good Noows – Your personal news stream http://goodnoows.com

  • Jeffrey

It's a great design and format, but it keeps crashing every time I try to read an individual article!

  • NolF

:O Brilliant, looks very promising. Seems like a step in the right direction with the different UI problem from different publishers. Would be interesting if they added support for Twitter/Facebook/ streams with option comment options etc.

  • http://www.pcartisan.com David1984

looks great but the price is a bit high.

  • Sy Tech

Um, its a great start but their logo needs a little bit of work. pu|se is like someone giving the middle finger.

  • http://www.Gadgets.org Gadgets

Finally. I agree though 20 feeds at $3.99 seems like an overkill.

As for the folks who have trouble because it crashes. The reason maybe that the source of the article or the feed has an issue.

  • http://www.wheretobuysillybandz.net/ Silly Bandz

That is good. I With time the number would go from 20 to like 100. but having up to 100 rss fedds on an ipad to view is a lot.

  • http://www.spectives.com Rutger van Waveren

Looks like spectives.com, but then as iPad App. Nice.

  • perpetuity

LOL — in this community someone gets modded down for critiquing the price!? There is no way I am paying 4 bucks for something so limited out of the gate. Maybe I'll be sad when they raise the price to 15 bucks? :)

Too bad because Google Reader needs work for iPad as the mobile version is too limited and the desktop version kind of sucks in a touch interface.

Instapaper is a good drug, if you are into reading and not swiping and skimming.

This is by far the best iPhone OS RSS reader I've ever purchased, but then again it's the only iPad one I've purchased. If you digg through the developer forums they say that it has 20 max feeds (it only started out with 10) atm because of stability issues. So in future updates you'll get more feeds.

  • Udit

isn't it just a iPad version of a google chrome plugin feedly, which turns your google reader feed as a magazine.

  • Red Salche

I recently started using Genieo Reader on my iPhone and iPad. Its a sort of a personalized e-paper created automatically from sites I'm visiting on my daily browsing. give it a try, its for free web app. (www.genieo.com)

  • Jon

So how does techcrunch monetize of this then? These guys get $3.99 a pop but all the action happens in the app so you don't get the eyeballs on your ads. I'm in to "a rising tide lifts all boats" but not sure thats the case here

Google already has something similar… It is called FastFlip.. It has almost the exact same layout and based on your interests picks out articles that you might like.. Been using this for a year..

Google already has something similar… It is called FastFlip.. It has almost the exact same layout and based on your interests picks out articles that you might like.. Been using this for a year.. It has a mobile version as well which can be accessed thru a browser

  • LanceDe

    Still waiting for the iStreamer..

  • http://twitter.com/eschatonik @eschatonik

It was doing that for me too, until I rebooted the iPad.

  • Ivan Lazarte

    1. RSS is dead. Who wrote that again?
    2. 3.99 for a reader? It (and the million others soon to be released exactly like it) will be free in a month or so.

  • http://www.8asians.com John

Reminds me of the NPR app in terms of layout.

  • Sheesh

Yeah, most iPhone OS users are freeloaders or near it – pricing at 99 cents could get more sales and maybe justify cost of hardware for development of this app.

  • Bear

SocialReader for iPad seems to do the same thing but with less flashy UI … http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/socialreader/id364…

  • johnanderson

Congrats to Akshay, Ankit, and the entire launch pad class for such a great success…

  • http://intensedebate.com/profiles/rnugent rnugent

When will someone come up with something new instead of the same old thing in a new package?

  • http://twitter.com/johnkoetsier @johnkoetsier

Very cool looking, but how is it must-have if I can only add 20 feeds?

Anyone who does RSS has more than that, and I'm sure I follow well over 100.

  • Craig

Does anyone test this stuff? This app is unstable and lacking basic features. Don't rave about a $4 app that is fatally flawed. An attractive UI is useless without the substance to make it useful or usable. What a load of hype.

  • hemant

    inspiring stuff!

  • randomass

Um, it looks like a ripoff of http://www.cooliris.com/

Well, I guess they did innovate by stripping out the features in cooliris that iphones and ipads can't handle. But really, making a visual newsreader app isn't exactly revolutionary, front page stuff. It's not even really news. The things have been around for about half a decade.

The only newsworthy part is OMGIPHONEAPPITSOCOOLAMIRITE

  • Rick

Needs to work offline. Not read yet.

  • Jack

piece of shit. damn thing doesn't refresh properly

  • http://jeffjudge.com Jeff Judge

Good idea for an app. The story design is similar to Newser.

  • Streich

This looks like a take on http :www.lazyfeed.com

  • Elliot

This is pretty much what I was anticipating for the Feedly app on the iPad

  • http://twitter.com/chrisfullman @chrisfullman

I thought the same thing when I saw this.

  • http://twitter.com/mariess @mariess

its a nice app, looks sexy but the images stay as small thumbnails even in full story view and it crashes after a few min and you have to launch… i personally prefer news rack for the ipad its the most stable and fastest one i have tried so far…

  • jbensamo

The Early Edition is an app having done this very well already. And it's not limited to 20 feeds!
The layout seems better to me too as it generates a real newspaper that you can browse!

No no Pulse, your are no innovation ;)

  • jbensamo

Check "The Early Edition" – way better app that does the same thing

  • jeff

The 3.99 charge, is this a one time charge or is it a recurring monthly charge?

  • zzz

    one time

  • http://twitter.com/iavian @iavian
  • Matt H

Since when can you charge money to show other people's content? I am the creator of DailyRSS.com but have stayed away from monetizing the site as there are strict rules in the content provider's TOS that prevent me from advertising or making money from THEIR content. If that is NOT the case, then I should be making my own app and charging a fee to read stories they could have otherwise gotten for FREE. Am I missing something here?
