After 2009 laid an egg on the video game industry, shuttering studios, ciphering profit margins, and forcing layoffs across the board, 2010 was all about circling the wagons. The world's biggest game publishers decided the best way to get through the economic downturn was to stick with what works -- also known as the "sequels, sequels, and more sequels" strategy.

Less risk, coupled with a focus on beefing up revenue streams by creating oodles of paid downloadable content for just about every game under the sun, quickly became the overarching theme.
