Metro Bag Search [But Don't Be Worried]
Posted on 17. Dec, 2010 by nolongerfamous.
The NBC Washington headline says it all: Metro Opens Bags
Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn “says he is not worried about a trend in terror threats against the transit system,” WTOP reports. And so WMATA will begin random bag searches at Metro stations soon.
Are you as confused as we are? He’s “not worried”, so because he’s “not worried”, metro police will do random bag searches?
Unless they’re looking for Christmas present ideas, they’re worried.

Jaguar Set Me Up
Posted on 16. Dec, 2010 by nolongerfamous.
Marion Barry = drama.
D.C. Councilman Marion Barry had his car stolen over the weekend, according to D.C. police.
It gets way better.
The former mayor parked his 2002 Jaguar outside the Patricia R. Harris Education Center in Southeast D.C. Sunday morning with the keys still in the ignition.
He left his keys in the ignition and the car was stolen? Doesn’t make a damn bit of sense.

Rumor: Chipotle To Open Casual Asian Spin Off in DC
Posted on 16. Dec, 2010 by nolongerfamous.
Where should we start forming the line?
About a month ago, news broke that Chipotle, the Denver-based kings of Mexican fast-casual fare, were working on a similarly structured Asian concept. We weren’t paying it much heed until New York Magazine’s Grub Street blog, in a post on James Beard Rising Star chef Nate Appleman’s unlikely new job with Chipotle, mentioned that the new concept will debut in the District.

It’s Cold, But We’re Still Skeptical
Posted on 15. Dec, 2010 by nolongerfamous.
This cold weather, yeah, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. [brrr]
A weak area of low pressure will be passing through Virginia south of Washington during the day on Thursday, Kierein said. That will likely spread some light snow through the region in the morning, with occasional light snow during the day.
Early reports indicate that DC will get one to two inches of white stuff, but let’s be honest, the weather reporting in this area hasn’t been accurate since Carter’s administration.

What’s Wrong With a $1.1 Trillion Omnibus Spending Bill? Do It For the Oysters!
Posted on 15. Dec, 2010 by nolongerfamous.
Before everybody flies off the handle and starts getting upset about the $1.1 trillion omnibus bill, perhaps we should step back and analyze some of the worthy projects.
$125,000 – Fishery equipment for the Guam Fisherman’s Cooperative Association
Ever been to Guam? Trust us, this is more than fair, especially since it’s about to tip over.
$413,000 – Peanut research in Alabama
We’re not quite sure how peanuts sneak into every congressional bill, but kudos to the brave men and women that slipped that it in.
$349,000 – Swine waste management in North Carolina
It’s a big problem, especially when the wind starts blowing.
$522,000 – Cranberry and blueberry disease and breeding in New Jersey
In our opinion, this can be done for $350,000, but still hugely important.
$500,000 – Oyster safety in Florida
Ever eaten a bad oyster. Yeah, keep this one in there.
$400,000 – Solar parking canopies and plug-in electric stations in Kansas
Is this for tractors or cars?
$165,000 – Maple syrup research in Vermont
Everyone knows there is maple syrup in Vermont. We admit, this one is a waste!

Michael Moore Comes Out of Retirement to Post Bail for Julian Assange
Posted on 14. Dec, 2010 by nolongerfamous.
What are like-minded friends for? [bail buddies]
Filmmaker Michael Moore has offered to put up the $20,000 bail required to release WikiLeaks leader Julian Assange from the London prison where he is currently being held. In a manifesto posted to his Web site, Moore characterized Assange as “a pioneer of free speech, transparent government and the digital revolution in journalism.” As for fear of a flight risk, Moore argued against this possibility by quite convincingly invoking the matter of Assange’s own ego. “I believe that Julian takes pride in his reputation and as any journalist would understands that if he were to abscond he would ruin his reputation in the media and journalism industries,” Moore said.
In other news, Julian lost a tooth eating prison food. That tooth was later stolen from him. Poor guy.
Read Moore’s reasoning here.

Terrible Holiday Idea: Caroling Flashmob at the Chinatown Metro Station
Posted on 13. Dec, 2010 by nolongerfamous.
We love flash mobs as much as the next person, but not when they interrupt our Monday evening commute.
Flashmobs have gone from edgy (no pants, silent dancing, zombies) to just plain ol’ cute. Now a Facebook group (along with Twitter hashtag #MetroCarols) is organizing folks to go flashmob caroling, Monday, Dec. 13… at the Chinatown Metro station.
You know, a really, really busy Metro station. During rush hour. For 90 minutes.
The event is scheduled from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Read the terrible news here.
PS: We’ve never seen a “no pants” flash mob, but we’re intrigued.

When Merrifield takes over the property later this month, they will be changing the name to “Rock Creek” – and that’s about it.
