Here at Hitched, we often hear comments from brides about how quickly a wedding day goes by. You spend months (sometimes years!) putting time and effort into planning just one day, and then it's over in a flash. This is why we believe that one of the absolute most important vendors that you'll hire for the big day should be your photographer. Not only will your wedding photos last a lifetime, feeling confident in the emotions and details that your photographer is able to capture will give you something wonderful to look forward to post-wedding.
But with all the photographers out there, how do you choose just one? The answer isn't particularly straighforward because every couple is different, and so much of what's important when choosing a photographer is how your personalities and styles mesh with one another. So for some specific advice on how to determine which photographer is perfect for you, we turned to one of the most sought after photographers in DC (and a favorite among Hitched brides) Kate Headley for some answers!

1. What's the best way to get started? KH: Go online, ask for recommendations from other vendors and friends, and check out magazines to find photographers in your area. When you've narrowed it down, go meet one to three photographers in person to get to know them a little more.

2. How should I approach each meeting? KH: Ask the photographer to show you several entire weddings (most likely online in a gallery) and try to look at one similar to your wedding. Look at all the images--indoors and out. Feel free to ask the photographer anything and everything. (I could probably talk about wedding photography for eight hours straight.) You want to find out what makes them unique, but also find for yourself why they're your perfect fit. Think about how you feel when looking at the photos-- do they evoke particular emotions from you? And go ahead-- ask us our strengths and weaknesses.

3. What's the best way to articulate what I am looking for? KH: The word photojournalism gets thrown around a lot. Before you meet, try to think of some other words to describe what you're looking for to tell the photographer. When you look at portfolios online, what are you responding to? Do you like sweeping wide angles? Do you like artistic black and white photos?

4. What about the moolah? KH: Don't be shy about asking what is included with a particular package offered by a photographer, and feel free to ask if tweaks can be made to existing packages if you don't see exactly what you're looking for. When it comes to booking and cost, compare the photographs not the packages. When two photographers cost the same and one offers an album, it doesn't mean that the album necessarily adds value. Go with the photographer whose work you like more and worry about the 'stuff' later.
5. What is a photographer looking for in a client? KH: I love it when a potential client really 'gets' my work. I get excited when a client likes my favorite images for the same reasons I do. In the Washington, DC area I photograph all types of weddings, from big hotels and galleries to farms and backyards--but I still have my point of view and a look that is consistent in every wedding. I want my clients to trust me because that's when I do my best work.
