Dallas Cowboys Notebook

    • Cowboys Emotionally Drained After Nearly Upsetting Defending Champions
    • Receiver Roy Williams waited six years to finally reach the playoffs last season. In 14 NFL seasons, quarterback Jon Kitna has played in just two playoff games. Each has endured so many defeats that to almost pull off a terrific comeback against the defending Super Bowl champions but fall short was like a kick in the, well, you know where. Williams had seemingly clinched Dallas' upset this evening with a 47-yard catch and run to the New ... More »

  • Wade Phillips took over as Cowboys' coach in 2007, as the former Broncos, Bills and Falcons head man was hired to help and try to bring Dallas back to another Super Bowl title. In his three seasons in Dallas, Phillips has a 33-15 record and two NFC East crowns, but only a 1-2 record in the postseason.

Phillips' first year was Dallas in 2007 was his best regular-season campaign, as the Cowboys compiled a 13-3 record to claim the NFC East and a four-game improvement over the 2006 campaign. Dallas Cowboys History

BERJAYAIn 1960, the NFL granted an expansion team to Dallas, and the new Cowboys team began play at the Cotton Bowl that fall. The Cowboys became competitive in the mid-1960s, reaching the NFL Championship game in 1966 in its first-ever playoff berth, falling to Green Bay at home for a spot in Super Bowl I. The next year, the team lost NFL Championship game again, losing to the Packers at frigid Lambeau Field.

Dallas reached its first Super Bowl in the 1970 season, falling to Baltimore in Super Bowl V. The next season, Roger Staubach took over the starting quarterback job midway in the campaign, and the Cowboys won their first-ever Super Bowl championship by beating Miami 24-3 in Super Bowl VI.

The team added its second Super Bowl crown in Super Bowl XII, beating the Broncos to cap the 1977 season. The next year, the Cowboys faced off against the NFL's other powerhouse of the 1970s for the Super Bowl XIII crown, but fell to Pittsburgh in a 35-31 defeat.

The Cowboys reached three straight NFC title games to open the 1980s, but lost to Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington respectively in those contests. After reaching the playoffs all but one year between 1966 and 1983 - reaching 10 NFL/NFC title games - the team struggled in the second half of the decade.

Jerry Jones took over the club in 1989, and with the additions of quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith and coach Jimmy Johnson, the Cowboys became the team of the 1990s, winning three Super Bowls between 1992 and 1995.

The Cowboys won Super Bowl XXVII after going 13-3 in 1992, routing Buffalo 52-17 for the team's third championship, forcing nine Bills turnovers in the process. The team repeated as champs in 1993, beating the Bills again in Super Bowl XXVIII.

Johnson left the club following his second Super Bowl win, and Barry Switzer took over. Dallas won again in 1995, beating Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX. That is Dallas' last appearance in the Super Bowl, as the team has not even reached the NFC Championship since.
