Our lab tests showed the popular Galeos Miso Caesar Dressing -- hyped on the NBC reality show "The Biggest Loser" and by featured personal trainer Jillian Michaels -- had 10 times the calories per serving that are claimed on the label. That's about the same as what full-fat, premium dressings have.

    Jason Cochran Filed Under: , , , , , ,

Since July, the city of London has been installing a system of loaner bikes and widespread docking stations that has locals commuting for the equivalent of 19 cents a day. They're called Barclays Cycle Hire, but Londoners call the cycles "Boris Bikes," after the city's swaggering mayor, Boris Johnson, and they're increasingly popular in a city that has labored under intense traffic, crawling public transportation and skyrocketing daily costs. Most incredibly, the city is making money off the bike rentals. Here's how London's win-win system works, and what Americans can learn from this good idea:

10 Things You Need to Know About Gift Cards

Bonnie McCarthy Filed Under: , ,

Gift card display in a storeAccording to a recent report from the National Retail Federation, clothing and gift cards are expected to be the most requested items on American wish lists for 2010, and while reindeer sweaters can be easily exchanged, Bankrate.com says there are ten things consumers should know when buying a gift card.

First, there's a difference between gift cards that are store specific, or "closed loop" (think: Barnes & Noble, Starbucks, Macy's), and those that spend like a branded credit card (i.e., American Express, Visa, MasterCard) which are "open loop." Still with me?

Popular Toy Gifts of Past Recessions, Thanks to Sears Catalog Archive

    Aaron Crowe Filed Under:

Sear catalog from 1905For anyone old enough to have ever had a Sears catalog at home, the memory of being a child and circling the toys they wanted for Christmas is a strong one. Sears printed the catalogs from 1896 until 1993, and while the catalogs that millions of children tore into is now long gone, they're available on the Internet in a new Sears catalog archive.

Ancestry.com announced Nov. 30, that it is making the complete collection of catalogs and more than 250,000 pages available online.

Viewing the pages is like traveling back in time, but without having to worry about philosophical issues such as meeting your mom when she was 6. They offer a glimpse of how Sears targeted -- and how customers spent what little money they had -- selling gifts during the many recessions of the past 100 years.

The freebie is the cheaper of the two plus toys, of course. There are more than 200 plush toys included in the sale, from the $3.95 clip-on plush "puffles" to a 32-inch tall Beast plush (from Beauty and the Beast) for $99.50.

You can search Disney's plush toys by price, character, size, and more. The Winne the Pooh plush is awfully cute, but at $49.50, a bit more than I want to spend. A smaller version is $16.50.
