Twitter Sets New Record: 3,283 Tweets Per Second

BERJAYADespite massive Twitter activity due to ongoing World Cup match play, Twitter’s biggest tweets per second record to date was during last week’s NBA finals. That record was shattered yesterday as Twitter users published 3,283 tweets per second at the close of Japan’s victory over Denwark in the World Cup.

These new numbers come directly from Twitter. You may recall that the previous record of 3,085 tweets per second came at the close of the Los Angeles Lakers’ victory over the Boston Celtics on June 17.

Both of these recent records are staggering given that Twitter — during normal daily activity — averages roughly 750 tweets per second. The Japan-Demark World Cup figure means that activity swelled 438% above average, which helps to put recent service issues into perspective.

Still the World Cup has yet to reach its climatic finale, so we expect this record broken in the very near future. Stay tuned.

What exactly was the date and time window? (GMT or some standard time reference)
  • What is the point of these numbers? Most of the traffic is generated by automated (re)tweets, which nullifies these numbers. They should really track the unique twitter feed
  • where's Denwark :)
  • Twitter’s biggest tweets per second record to date was during last week’s NBA finals? or Facebook ? confuzing ING
  • Does this mean that Twitter fixed it's scalability issues, and there will be fewer Fail Whales now?
  • OK. Wait. How come Twitter trending words never has, "GOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!?" - me @ http://sparkah.com
  • Denwark and then Demark? Editing much?
  • People sure do love to tweet.
  • Actually, not only Denmark - Japan was almost finished. Netherlands - Cameroon was at the same time. Remember a few weeks ago when the Dutch took all or almost all trending topics with #tk2010 related topics for quite some time? They were having elections. Maybe it was the Dutchies again yesterday :) How come you guys are sure the records is by the Japan - Denmark match?
  • It happened six minutes after the Netherlands - Cameroon match ended, but at the exact moment the Japan - Denmark game finished. I'm sure the Dutch contributed, but still think it was the Japanese, excited by their first non-home-soil advancement to the knockout rounds, that pushed the record.
  • Wow, per second...

There are proportionately more Japanese on Twitter than Americans, and the Japanese apparently never took to Facebook or MySpace. Americans have. So when the US won the game versus Algeria, some of us American fans probably took to Facebook over Twitter to share the joy. But when Japan won their game (and arguably their victory was more important to Japan than the US's to the US, since Japan has never made it into the knock-out round outside of their home soil), Japanese fans probably took to Twitter en masse.

  • "There are proportionately more Japanese on Twitter than Americans", that it´s not true. I wrote something about that a few days ago
