From the abyss of the Iraq War (7): 'Shoot anyone on the street'
BY KAZUYA MATSUMOTO STAFF WRITER

November 28, 2010 - ...In April 2004, Lemieux's unit received an order. "My platoon was called out to go rescue a recon unit that was surrounded." One of the rules of engagement now was that "Everyone on the street is supposed to be an enemy." Lemieux couldn't differentiate between combatants and civilians, and he didn't know who the enemy was....On one occasion, the door of a building suddenly opened, and an unarmed Iraqi emerged. A Marine in front of Lemieux shot him dead on the spot. The rules of engagement became even more haphazard. It had become, "Shoot anyone on the street." Indiscriminate shootings continued...

The Rich Get Rich and the Poor Get Poorer
Hunger and Homelessness in America

by Tom Turnipseed
28homeless-and-hungry.jpg

November 28, 2010 - "There's nothing surer; the rich get rich and the poor get poorer," was a slogan of the roaring 20s. The famous phrase was adapted from "Ain't We Got Fun," a popular song recorded in 1921. So what's new in America in the first decade of the 2000s? Nothing! America's top 72 wage earners averaged 84 million dollars each in income last year, according to Social Security Administration data. The richest 1 percent of us earned 24 % of the nation's total income, the highest since 1928, just before the Great Depression. On the other hand, 14.3 % were living in poverty in 2009, according to the U. S Census Bureau. 50 million people from 17.4 million families are so poor they couldn't buy sufficient food last year. About one million children from more than a third of these households missed meals regularly according to a recent study by the Department of Agriculture...

Why Poverty Spreads Across America
by Sherwood Ross

November 28, 2010 - Pockets of poverty, like the sores of some malignant disease, are spreading across America, as its states and cities go broke and bankrupt. "Camden, New Jersey, stands as a warning of what huge pockets of America could turn into," The Nation magazine reports in its Nov. 22nd issue. In fact, it has already happened, it is happening all over, and there is no signal on the horizon that poverty and blight will not continue to spread. It is not that Americans are lazy and shiftless; rather, they are reeling from betrayal---for they have been betrayed both by their employers, who have shown not an ounce of loyalty to their work forces, and they have been betrayed by their Federal government, which has lied the nation into costly criminal wars...

GOP Rep. asks Clinton to declare WikiLeaks a foreign terrorist organization
By Stephen C. Webster

November 28, 2010 - A Republican Congressman from New York has invented a new definition for the word "terrorism" that doesn't require guns, bombs, vast underground networks of sleeper cells, a criminal conspiracy or even violence. All that's needed to be a terrorist, according to Rep. Peter King, is a website and some inconvenient information. That's why King sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Attorney General Eric Holder on Sunday, demanding that whistleblower website WikiLeaks be deemed a "foreign terrorist organization" and it's founder declared a terror ringleader...

Will the Palestinian Authority declare an independent state or collapse?
Stuart Littlewood
28pal29.jpg

November 28, 2010 - The other day I looked back with sadness on how nothing had changed for the better since my last trip to Palestine three years ago. On that occasion I also visited Gaza, an experience indelibly etched on my memory. The situation there only goes from bad to worse - intolerably worse. But if I'm dispirited, heaven knows how the average Palestinian must feel as a result of the incompetent leadership they have had to endure these last 63 years a leadership which failed to coherently argue and convey the justice of the Palestinian cause and never bothered, even to this day, to formulate and put into action an effective communications plan to win freedom. The Israelis, though accomplished propagandists, are not very bright. In the battle for hearts and minds they have a violent story to tell and a lousy reputation to defend. And its getting worse every day. In their greed they score potentially damaging own-goals and leave the moral high ground to their victims....

War in Afghanistan Reaches New Heights of Absurdity
Laurence Lewis

November 28, 2010 - Earlier this month, it was reported that one of the largest U.S. government contractors in Afghanistan was being fined nearly $70 million for having "knowingly and systematically overcharged the U.S. government." But just two months after a whistleblower revealed the Louis Berger Group's deliberate and systematic overcharging, the U.S. Agency for International Development awarded the company a new joint contract worth $1.4 billion. That seemingly large fine turned out to be but a minor business expense. The one part of the U.S. effort in Afghanistan that is going very well is the contracting. Not the results of the contracting, the money being made off it..

Video: Soviet veteran urges Afghan pullout
AlJazeera.net

November 28, 2010 - US-led forces have now been in Afghanistan for 3,338 days, the same number of days as the Soviet troops in the 1980s during their unsuccessful occupation of the country. Afghanistan has been referred to as the 'Graveyard of Empires' as it has never been successfully conquered by a foreign army. Many military veterans who had fought with the Soviet Union's army against the Mujahideens in Afghanistan have been left with entrenched emotional scars due to the war. In an exclusive interview, a Russian veteran has told Al Jazeera his heartwrenching account of the Soviet conflict and called on the US-led forces to withdraw from the country...

Candidly speaking: The de-Zionization of Anglo Jewry
By Alan Hart

November 28, 2010 - That was the headline over a story - wonderful news, I say, if its true - in Israels English language newspaper, the Jerusalem Post, on 25 November. On behalf of Zionisms colonial project in Palestine, the writer, Isi Leibler, was verbally crucifying one of Britains most influential Jewish leaders for daring to go public with his criticism of Netanyahu and saying, among other things, that Israels policies and actions were harming the best interests of British Jews, and by implication non-Israeli Jews everywhere...

November 28, 2010 - Israel approached the PA and Egypt about potentially assuming control of the Gaza Strip following a theoretical "defeat" of Hamas before Israel's winter war on Gaza, a leaked US diplomatic cable revealed Sunday...In the report, US officials say that Barak explained, "GOI [Government Of Israel] had consulted with Egypt and Fatah prior to Operation Cast Lead, asking if they were willing to assume control of Gaza once Israel defeated Hamas. How 250,000 US embassy cables were leaked
David Leigh

November 28, 2010 - An innocuous-looking memory stick, no longer than a couple of fingernails, came into the hands of a Guardian reporter earlier this year. The device is so small it will hang easily on a keyring. But its contents will send shockwaves through the world's chancelleries and deliver what one official described as "an epic blow" to US diplomacy. The 1.6 gigabytes of text files on the memory stick ran to millions of words: the contents of more than 250,000 leaked state department cables, sent from, or to, US embassies around the world. What will emerge in the days and weeks ahead is an unprecedented picture of secret diplomacy as conducted by the planet's sole superpower....

US embassy cables leak sparks global diplomatic crisis

November 28, - The United States was catapulted into a worldwide diplomatic crisis today, with the leaking to the Guardian and other international media of more than 250,000 classified cables from its embassies, many sent as recently as February this year. At the start of a series of daily extracts from the US embassy cables many designated "secret" the Guardian can disclose that Arab leaders are privately urging an air strike on Iran and that US officials have been instructed to spy on the UN leadership. These two revelations alone would be likely to reverberate around the world. But the secret dispatches which were obtained by WikiLeaks, the whistleblowers' website, also reveal Washington's evaluation of many other highly sensitive international issues...

WikiLeaks embassy cables: download the key data and see how it breaks down
Guardian

November 28, 2010 - WikiLeaks embassy cables revelations cover a huge dataset of official documents: 251,287 dispatches, from more than 250 worldwide US embassies and consulates. It's a unique picture of US diplomatic language - including over 50,000 documents covering the current Obama administration. But what does the data include? The cables themselves come via the huge Secret Internet Protocol Router Network, or SIPRNet. SIPRNet is the worldwide US military internet system, kept separate from the ordinary civilian internet and run by the Department of Defense in Washington. Since the attacks of September 2001, there has been a move in the US to link up archives of government information, in the hope that key intelligence no longer gets trapped in information silos or "stovepipes"...

The New York Times: What Passes for Journalism in the Newspaper of Record
by Stephen Lendman

November 28, 2010 - Overall, America's major media fails the test. It's biased, shameless, and irresponsible with "everything to sell and nothing to tell" as a noted US media critic once said. It delivers a daily diet of "managed news" (propaganda), infotainment, and "junk food news," a worthless mix, treating people like mushrooms - well-watered, in the dark, and uninformed about what matters most. No wonder greater numbers opt out, consuming less broadcast "news" and print media, the kind no one should waste time or money on. No paper has more clout than The New York Times. Media critic Norman Solomon once called its front page "the most valuable square inches of media real estate in the USA" - in fact, anywhere because its reports circulate globally...

Iraq has crashed like a plane without a black box

It covers the countrys industry, agriculture, the personality of Iraqi citizens, the fabric of the society, the status of laws and regulations and even the notion of democracy. If there was a black box in Iraq, the new Iraqi government would have had the opportunity to open it before starting its new term. This would have given it an overview of the past years and the blunders that have been committed and how big crimes have passed unnoticed. Such a black box would have revealed for us of the murky world of the American and Iranian meddling in the countrys affairs and their role in its destruction. The destruction of Iraq is complete. Military Resistance 8K25: "Stronger And Bolder"
Thomas F Barton

November 27, 2010 - ...In a striking parallel with what the Americans have been advocating as part of their counterinsurgency initiative, the Haqqanis have set up local shura (consultation) councils made up of village elders and clerics to run the affairs of villagers in the "liberated" areas and create local security. The old mans job is to supervise these councils. "I am a representative of the movement and I walk among the people and everyone knows me. I move between the people and the commanders, watching the commanders behaviour. I listen to the people and convey the picture to the supreme leaders," he said. Had the Taliban changed? A future administration would be based on Islamic rule, which was what the Afghan people wanted, but it would be different in detail from the Taliban regime that had ruled in Kabul before. "We will not rule based on theory. The people want us to be more pragmatic." He quoted the Muslim poet Muhammad Iqbal. "When the painter works on the same old painting again, he will make it much better. "The Taliban that will return will not be like the old Taliban. We have learned from the old mistakes. In his new job, Mr Khawaja meets many other Iraqi refugees who have been flocking to Turkey and who sometimes bring news from Baghdad, most of it grim. "Just the other week, I spoke with some people here who told me our house in Baghdad had been bombed," he said. "It's gone." There are about 3,800 Christian Iraqi refugees in Turkey at the moment, according to the Chaldean-Assyrian Association, or Kader, the charity where Mr Khawaja works. Many more have fled to Arab-speaking neighbours of Iraq, but Turkey is attracting a growing number of them lately despite the language barrier. Since the attacks on churches in Baghdad earlier this month, 300 to 400 Iraqi Christians have knocked on the association's door in Istanbul. "There were two families last week," Mr Khawaja said. Anonymous officials: Afghan war is going great!
By Justin Elliott

November 27, 2010 - Now that the war in Afghanistan is set to continue through 2014 and probably beyond -- even with half of Americans opposing the war -- the Obama administration is at pains to convince the public and the press that things are getting better. That's a tough task these days, with a new Pentagon report to Congress saying that violence in Afghanistan is at an all-time high. Over the summer, the number of U.S. soldiers killed in 2010 surpassed the number killed in all of 2009. And then there's the embarrassing news that the Taliban leader engaged in much-hyped peace talks with the U.S. was in fact an impostor. Despite all that, some administration and military officials are arguing that there are signs of hope in Afghanistan. And a pattern has emerged in these assurances: More often than not, the officials passing them on to the press insist on anonymity...

Margaret Kimberley
27-obama-world-police.jpg

November 27, 2010 - The germs of fascism infest both parties, thriving among Republican and Democratic hosts, alike. Barack Obamas 2008 victory was also a new lease on life for George Bushs foreign wars and strangulation of domestic civil liberties, most recently in the assault on travelers bodies at airports. The first Black president rules very much like the last white president, and "the absence of outrage directed in the right direction makes us more endangered now than in the days when Bush occupied the White House."

The US of A breaks the Soviet record
By Glenn Greenwald

Even for the humble among us who try to avoid jingoistic outbursts, some national achievements are so grand that they merit a moment of pride and celebration: US presence in Afghanistan as long as Soviet slog. The Soviet Union couldn't win in Afghanistan, and now the United States is about to have something in common with that futile campaign: nine years, 50 days. On Friday, the U.S.-led coalition will have been fighting in this South Asian country for as long as the Soviets did in their humbling attempt to build up a socialist state. It seems clear that a similar -- or even grander -- prize awaits us as the one with which the Soviets were rewarded. I hope nobody thinks that just because we can't identify who the Taliban leaders are after almost a decade over there that this somehow calls into doubt our ability to magically re-make that nation. Even if it did, it's vital that we stop the threat of Terrorism, and nothing helps to do that like spending a full decade -- and counting -- invading, occupying, and bombing Muslim countries...

Iraq: The charade of withdrawal & the persistent Resistance .... مهزلة الإنسحاب و إستمرار المقاومة
Imad Khadduri

November 27, 2010 - The above article exposes the insidious reality that the American occupation has bestowed upon Iraq aimed at its intended disintegration, especially after the charade of the American troop reduction which is to be largely replenished by paid mercenaries. The only effective alternative is for the Iraqi Resistance to persist in attacking, eliminating and disseminating the American soldiers and the mercenaries. Below are video clips of the Iraqi Resistance operations against the Americans, mostly by the Naqshabandi fighters. These are among many other video clips from several Iraqi Resistance groups that have been receivded during this period, but we only list the below because of the quality of their recording. These attacks are often not being mentioned publicly by the U.S. army, nor are they reported in the "mainstream media" with their embedded journalists. Another bout of Wikileaks is indeed required...

November 27, 2010 - A wave of demolitions by Israeli forces occurred in the Jordan valley, Palestine on 24 and 24 November 2010. In just two days, in two different locations, 8 Palestinian structures were demolished, including 2 homes, one mosque and animal sheds. In total 25 Palestinians were made homeless. In the village of Khirbet Yarza, a village of less than 200 residents, located East of Tubas in a very isolated area in the Jordan valley on 25.11.2010, leaving 14 people including 7 children homeless. The only local mosque was also destroyed. The mosque was built prior to 1967 but was recently innovated and extended. Members of one of the families who lost their homes, the Anabousy family, were seen sitting in front of the furniture of their house, while other members started rebuilding. Anabusi family have lived there for the last 7 years. This was the third time their homes had been destroyed...

Making peace impossible
Khaled Amayreh

November 27, 2010 - In a move primarily aimed at making it harder to cede occupied Arab land as part of any peace agreement with Syria or the Palestinians, the Israeli Knesset this week approved a bill requiring a two-thirds Knesset majority, as well as a general referendum, for any prospective withdrawal from the Golan Heights and East Jerusalem, occupied by Israel during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The bill, initiated by Likud Knesset member Yarive Levin, passed by 65 to 33, reflecting a clear right-wing leaning in the current Israeli legislature. The bill, which effectively puts Israel above international law and will go into effect immediately, is the latest provocative measure adopted by a government widely considered the most hawkish in Israel's history...

Afghanistan is About Perpetual War
By Harvey Wasserman

November 27, 2010 - The war in Afghanistan is about perpetual war, not Afghanistan. Its about preventing democracy in the United States, not bringing it to Southwest Asia. And it is the tombstone of the Obama Presidency. To justify the fight, theyve rounded up the usual suspects: Terror. Oil. Minerals. Poppies. Democracy. But George Orwells 1984 -- now updated with important new books -- illuminates the bigger picture: "continuous warfare" is the key to social control. It keeps the public frightened and dependent. And it keeps "the wheels of industry turning without increasing the real wealth of the world. Goods must be produced, but they must not be distributed." Better to destroy them in a ritual slaughter like Afghanistan, and wherever is next...

Oscar Lopez Rivera: Imprisoned for Supporting Puerto Rican Independence
by Stephen Lendman

November 27, 2010 - After the 1898 Spanish-American War, the US took over the Philippines, Guam, Samoa, Hawaii, Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Canal Zone, assorted other territories, and Puerto Rico. On September 29, its Governor-General, Manuel Macias y Casado (a Spanish general), ceded control to Washington, its current status today as a colony. In 1966, then University of Puerto Rico economics associate, Dr. Antonio J. Gonzales said: "The Puerto Rican Independence Party bases its struggle in favor of the independence of Puerto Rico on the conviction that we continue to be a (US) colony, thus being denied (our) right to freedom and sovereignty." After taking over in 1898, America "never granted Puerto Ricans the total control of their lives and destiny. Sovereign powers have never been transferred to us in order to be able to decide in all those areas that affect the collective life of our nation."...

HRW: Israel: Soldiers Punishment for Using Boy as Human Shield Inadequate Two Sergeants Demoted and Given Suspended Sentences
Human Rights Watch
27hs-tarapour.jpg

November 27, 2010 - An Israeli military court's sentence on November 21, 2010, for two soldiers found guilty of using a Palestinian boy as a "human shield" during the 2008-09 offensive in Gaza appears inadequate considering the gravity of the offense, Human Rights Watch said today. "The slap on the wrist for these soldiers is another slap in the face for the victims of violations during Operation Cast Lead," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. "Not only do these sentences seem unjustifiably lenient, but two years later, they are the only sentences Israel has handed down for serious human rights violations among the many alleged during the Gaza offensive."...

My Exchange About Guantnamo with Benjamin Wittes, Advocate of Military Detention without Trial
Andy Worthington

November 27, 2010 - I first heard from Benjamin Wittes of the Brookings Institution about two years ago, when he was conducting research into the cases of the prisoners held at Guantnamo, for a project entitled, "The Current Detainee Population of Guantnamo: An Empirical Study." Wittes got in touch because he had drawn on my analysis of 8,000 publicly available documents, which I used for my book The Guantnamo Files, and which I have been using ever since in my ongoing commentary on Guantnamo and my analyis of the stories of the men held there. However, while he was kind enough to acknowledge my work, his report demonstrated an unbridgeable chasm between his work and mine, as he essentially analyzed the governments supposed evidence as though it were all true, whereas I was much more skeptical....

The 'Lebanonisation' of Iraq
Lamis Andoni
27iraq487371_20.jpg

November 27, 2010 - ...The agreement reached earlier this month would allow Nuri al-Maliki, the incumbent prime minister, to form a new government - even though the Iraqiya coalition took two more seats than his State of Law alliance in the parliamentary elections. The accord would establish a Lebanon-style sectarian and ethnic formula - which might prove to be more of a recipe for constant instability than a guarantor of national reconciliation. It is ironic that we are witnessing the 'Lebanonisation' of Iraq at the exact moment when this type of power-sharing formula may be causing the 'Iraqisation' of Lebanon - as many fear that Lebanon is on the verge of inter-sectarian strife. Lebanon's sectarian power distribution has not saved it from sectarian rivalry but rather repeatedly plunged it into civil violence and even war. Consequently, Lebanon has become hostage to its sectarian system, with all parties - while competing over their share - constantly seeking to retain it for fear of being marginalised. Iraq's emerging power-sharing system gives the post of president to the Kurds, the post of prime minister to the Shia, while the Sunni gain or are left with (depending on your point of view) the speaker of parliament position and probably also the vice-presidency...

The future of Fayyadism
Max Ajl

November 27, 2010 - ...The central issue is that of labor dependency. Israel long ago replaced Gaza-as-bedroom-community with near-slaves from the Philippines and other Asian countries, and does not rely on West Bank-based Palestinian labor. In contrast, South Africa was vitally dependent on black labor from the Bantustans. So whats the plan for economic growth in the West Bank (As always, forget Gaza)? A recent essay by Sam Bahour in the Middle East Research and Information Project lays out the economic trajectory of Fayyadism. At best, these economic development programs are composed of industrial zones which "promise menial labor-intensive jobs to Palestinians who are extremely reliant on donor funds to maintain their livelihoods," meant to shift over to a system based on foreign-capital inflows like the aid-based development model currently prevalent in the West Bank. The forthcoming programs are slightly different in that they "require Palestinians to sell their labor for the benefit of those commercial entities established in the industrial zones, which will depend on Israeli good will to succeed." The Palestinian economy will remain totally subservient to the Israeli economy, the corollary of the attempt at political subservience which the Obama administration is trying to enshrine through the Palestinian Authority...

Israeli forces shoot child on Gaza border
Ma'an news

November 27, 2010 - A Palestinian boy was shot and injured by Israeli forces in Beit Lahiya Saturday morning, after soldiers opened fire on the boy, who was with a group of men collecting stone aggregates along the Gaza-Israel border. Medics said the unidentified 12-year-old was shot in the foot and evacuated to the Kamal Udwan Hospital where he was treated for the moderate injury. An Israeli military spokesperson said soldiers identified "a number of suspects approaching the fence," adding that the group was only 50 meters from the border, in an area where a more than one kilometer no-go zone is enforced by Israeli troops...

November 27, 2010 - Egyptians are set to go to the polls to elect a new parliament amid fears of vote fraud following a campaign marred by violence and a crackdown on the opposition. The Middle East's most populous nation will elect 508 members of parliament in Sunday's polls. Security forces are on high alert after violent clashes erupted throughout the Nile Delta and in the south of the country. Officials have said that several rallies on Friday turned violent after supporters of rival candidates hurled stones at each other...

Torture Tort Terror
Obama uses national security as a cover for violating peoples rights.

Jacob Sullum
26obama_torture_xlarge.jpg

November 26, 2010 - During his presidential campaign, Barack Obama criticized the Bush administration for its excessive secrecy, noting that it had "invoked a legal tool known as the 'state secrets privilege more than any other previous administration to get cases thrown out of civil court." Obama also promised to end "extraordinary rendition," a practice through which "we outsource our torture to other countries." In September, however, the Obama administration used the state secrets privilege to block a lawsuit by five former captives who say they were tortured as a result of extraordinary rendition. Although candidate Obama surely would have been outraged, President Obama is for some reason less concerned about abuses of executive power...
