Why Poverty Spreads Across America
by Sherwood Ross
November 28, 2010 - Pockets of poverty, like the sores of some malignant disease, are spreading across America, as its states and cities go broke and bankrupt. "Camden, New Jersey, stands as a warning of what huge pockets of America could turn into," The Nation magazine reports in its Nov. 22nd issue. In fact, it has already happened, it is happening all over, and there is no signal on the horizon that poverty and blight will not continue to spread. It is not that Americans are lazy and shiftless; rather, they are reeling from betrayal---for they have been betrayed both by their employers, who have shown not an ounce of loyalty to their work forces, and they have been betrayed by their Federal government, which has lied the nation into costly criminal wars...

Candidly speaking: The de-Zionization of Anglo Jewry
By Alan Hart
November 28, 2010 - That was the headline over a story - wonderful news, I say, if its true - in Israels English language newspaper, the Jerusalem Post, on 25 November. On behalf of Zionisms colonial project in Palestine, the writer, Isi Leibler, was verbally crucifying one of Britains most influential Jewish leaders for daring to go public with his criticism of Netanyahu and saying, among other things, that Israels policies and actions were harming the best interests of British Jews, and by implication non-Israeli Jews everywhere...

The New York Times: What Passes for Journalism in the Newspaper of Record
by Stephen Lendman
November 28, 2010 - Overall, America's major media fails the test. It's biased, shameless, and irresponsible with "everything to sell and nothing to tell" as a noted US media critic once said. It delivers a daily diet of "managed news" (propaganda), infotainment, and "junk food news," a worthless mix, treating people like mushrooms - well-watered, in the dark, and uninformed about what matters most. No wonder greater numbers opt out, consuming less broadcast "news" and print media, the kind no one should waste time or money on. No paper has more clout than The New York Times. Media critic Norman Solomon once called its front page "the most valuable square inches of media real estate in the USA" - in fact, anywhere because its reports circulate globally...

WOMAN TO GO Women for sale' store highlights sex trafficking in Israel.
by Irit Hakim, Safe World Israel Correspondent |
November 27, 2010 - In a shopping center in Tel Aviv, women standing in a window display tagged with price tickets, were being offered for sale. Each woman's price tag detailed her age, weight, height, dimensions and country of origin written as "Made in...", like a piece of clothing. It was part of a protest to highlight the problem of human trafficking for the sex industry. " An estimated 3,000 women are living in Israel today having been smuggled into the country, sold and resold while being assaulted, raped and starved. "...

Iraqi Christians fleeing to Turkey
Thomas Seibert |
November 27, 2010 - ..."We received a threat by some people" in Iraq, Mr Khawaja, a 37, an engineer who works as a volunteer at a Christian charity in Istanbul, said this week. "There is no security. Sometimes when you go out in Baghdad, you cannot even be sure that you can return home," Mr Khawaja said. "They are killing Christians every day in Iraq." In his new job, Mr Khawaja meets many other Iraqi refugees who have been flocking to Turkey and who sometimes bring news from Baghdad, most of it grim. "Just the other week, I spoke with some people here who told me our house in Baghdad had been bombed," he said. "It's gone." There are about 3,800 Christian Iraqi refugees in Turkey at the moment, according to the Chaldean-Assyrian Association, or Kader, the charity where Mr Khawaja works. Many more have fled to Arab-speaking neighbours of Iraq, but Turkey is attracting a growing number of them lately despite the language barrier. Since the attacks on churches in Baghdad earlier this month, 300 to 400 Iraqi Christians have knocked on the association's door in Istanbul. "There were two families last week," Mr Khawaja said. "One had nine members, the other 13."...

In photos: Wave of demolitions in Jordan valley, 26.11.2010
Demotix |
November 27, 2010 - A wave of demolitions by Israeli forces occurred in the Jordan valley, Palestine on 24 and 24 November 2010. In just two days, in two different locations, 8 Palestinian structures were demolished, including 2 homes, one mosque and animal sheds. In total 25 Palestinians were made homeless. In the village of Khirbet Yarza, a village of less than 200 residents, located East of Tubas in a very isolated area in the Jordan valley on 25.11.2010, leaving 14 people including 7 children homeless. The only local mosque was also destroyed. The mosque was built prior to 1967 but was recently innovated and extended. Members of one of the families who lost their homes, the Anabousy family, were seen sitting in front of the furniture of their house, while other members started rebuilding. Anabusi family have lived there for the last 7 years. This was the third time their homes had been destroyed...

Making peace impossible
Khaled Amayreh
November 27, 2010 - In a move primarily aimed at making it harder to cede occupied Arab land as part of any peace agreement with Syria or the Palestinians, the Israeli Knesset this week approved a bill requiring a two-thirds Knesset majority, as well as a general referendum, for any prospective withdrawal from the Golan Heights and East Jerusalem, occupied by Israel during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The bill, initiated by Likud Knesset member Yarive Levin, passed by 65 to 33, reflecting a clear right-wing leaning in the current Israeli legislature. The bill, which effectively puts Israel above international law and will go into effect immediately, is the latest provocative measure adopted by a government widely considered the most hawkish in Israel's history...

Oscar Lopez Rivera: Imprisoned for Supporting Puerto Rican Independence
by Stephen Lendman
November 27, 2010 - After the 1898 Spanish-American War, the US took over the Philippines, Guam, Samoa, Hawaii, Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Canal Zone, assorted other territories, and Puerto Rico. On September 29, its Governor-General, Manuel Macias y Casado (a Spanish general), ceded control to Washington, its current status today as a colony. In 1966, then University of Puerto Rico economics associate, Dr. Antonio J. Gonzales said: "The Puerto Rican Independence Party bases its struggle in favor of the independence of Puerto Rico on the conviction that we continue to be a (US) colony, thus being denied (our) right to freedom and sovereignty." After taking over in 1898, America "never granted Puerto Ricans the total control of their lives and destiny. Sovereign powers have never been transferred to us in order to be able to decide in all those areas that affect the collective life of our nation."...

My Exchange About Guantnamo with Benjamin Wittes, Advocate of Military Detention without Trial
Andy Worthington
November 27, 2010 - I first heard from Benjamin Wittes of the Brookings Institution about two years ago, when he was conducting research into the cases of the prisoners held at Guantnamo, for a project entitled, "The Current Detainee Population of Guantnamo: An Empirical Study." Wittes got in touch because he had drawn on my analysis of 8,000 publicly available documents, which I used for my book The Guantnamo Files, and which I have been using ever since in my ongoing commentary on Guantnamo and my analyis of the stories of the men held there. However, while he was kind enough to acknowledge my work, his report demonstrated an unbridgeable chasm between his work and mine, as he essentially analyzed the governments supposed evidence as though it were all true, whereas I was much more skeptical....

Open Chapters in Dungeons...
Layla Anwar
November 27, 2010 - ...How many of you can live a "normal" life not knowing what has happened to the people you care for ?! I still don't know where O. is and if he's still alive. It's a big mystery. Why can't anyone tell us ? What is this Freedom where you simply disappear and no one knows anything about your whereabouts ? Is he dead, is he alive, where is he, what happened, if dead where is his body, in which mass grave, who saw him last, in which prison, was he badly tortured, how did he die, did he die, can we keep hope, can we still wait some more, can anyone tell us anything ? these are questions I live with daily...
