Poet Slams Nicki Minaj….
The talented Jasmin Mans created a stir online this week after she released video of her performing an original poem titled “Nicki Minaj” during the 2010 Stomp Da Madness competition at the University of Wisconsin. The video hit our inbox many times this week but what I found interesting was that no one could describe to us what was said about Ms. Minaj nor could they explain the overall message which confirmed that most were more intrigued by her delivery (which ironically mocked Nicki Minaj’s) than they were her actual words.
I included the text version below followed by my response:
You are being traded paper in exchange for you to be plastic
All Dolls will eventually mal-function
(I don’t even know why you girls bother at this point like give it up, it ‘s me I win you lose)
Nicki MInaj,
(It’s me)
I must admit
(Its, its me)
I have always been intrigued by your ass,
I guess that’s what the world looked like after falling from your shoulders.
(Like give it up)
You have the heartbeat of a suicide bomber
A baseline breathing out of your pulse
Your thighs play storage for the weight of the world
I dreamt that you used to back pack, the lost raps, of Female MCs who could not find their way out the cipher
(Its just like I single handedly annihilated like every rape bitch in the building)
Traded in your crown for unsharpened pencils and blank CDs
(Like give it up)
Do you ever feel a cord gripping on your neck, choke, spit?
Don’t let this industry f*ck the Assata out of you
(Harijuku-Barbie)
Can and will never be code for queen
You are a Queen no matter how many times they try to shuffle you back in tape decks.
Bi Sex, straight, you’ve earned my respect
(You da Bestest)
But I know your spine binds and crooked lines
And you can’t seem to write a rhyme for your broken daughters
Slaughter, bent over back, ass cracked, bitch slapped, in videos
There is nothing pedal bike pretty about broken
Do you know what this media is trying to do to you?
They will porcelain
(Barbie)
Doll the shit out of you
Leave you noose necked hanging from Zion they will Lauryn Hill you
The mis-education of a Barbie doll coming soon
(I just had an epiphany)
Barbie, I think NYC is making you forget you come from Queens
Its scary when you have wack MCs trying to ghost write your obituary
(You should buy a 16 cuz I write it good)
Your existence is not recyclable to me
(Barbie)
Stop spitting me toy stories
Of Woodys and Buzzlight Years who only come alive when no body is watching
Fake breast
Once upon a time before puberty and tissue filled training bras all little girls wanted a toy chest
What do you treasure? *
You have turned your G-spot into a land-mind
Dirty, disgusting
We have been waiting centuries for a woman like you to carve your stiletto in history
This microphone is not a dildo so you are going to have to cum a little harder than that,
(I, win, I win, you lose)
Come a little harder for rap
Too many women before you have laid down tracks — UNIT…Y?
So you wouldn’t have to record your on your back
Spit some shit it for girls who kiss girls and got beat down to their backs
We will remember you for that
Lips sync your screams and remember your inflections and copyright your raps
MC
(Barbie)
For young money anyone can buy themselves their own ( I’m Nick Minaj, Nicki Lewinski, Nicki Barbie, the boss)
Crown, Vagina, Womanhood, and Talent,
All Sold separately
(Barbie)
You are being stabbed in the back
Inserted with a wind up string and a tag?
(R, R, R, Roger that)
Although I don’t believe Jasmine was completely bashing Nicki Minaj, I will say this. Too many people are putting the female rap game on one woman’s shoulders. You can’t expect Nicki Minaj to be a Missy Elliot, A Lauryn Hill, an MC Lyte or a Queen Latifah. She’s Nicki Minaj.
In the last ten years, most of the girls that came into the rap game used their sexuality to attract consumers but people were okay with that because for every Foxy Brown & Lil Kim, you had a Missy Elliot or Lauryn Hill to balance it out. Amongst the men, the expectations for some rappers are lower, because for every Plies, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame and Soulja Boy (no disrespect to any of these artists), you have a Common, Jay-z, Kanye West, J Cole, & Drake which gives the rap game balance. With Nicki being the only female rap artist that has that type of commercial success in 2010, people expect her to be everything they want out of the female rap game. That’s impossible.
Until other female rappers decide to step it up and release music that the public can appreciate, the focus and pressure will continue to be on Nicki Minaj. You can’t knock her for playing dress up and spitting animated lyrics to get her audiences’ attention in the same way past rappers have used scantily clad outfits and over-sexed lyrics to grab theirs.
Remember that Lauryn Hill line “I add a “motherf*cka “so you ignorant n*ggas hear me?
hmmmm…

I, myself, think Nicki has a lot of talent. She is a great actress and performer, but she is not a
lyricist. When i first heard about her on the 5star chick remix, I was so excited to see what she was gonna do, but she defiantly disappointed me. All she raps about is being better than other females and having a lot of money… I could only get through 1 song on her mixtape and I think Right Thru ME and Your Love sounds like trash and her normal rapping voice without the animation doesn’t draw me in… but that’s just my opinion. She reminds me of a writer that uses really big words to attract people’s attention…but then when you really listen, she is saying nothing. She just seems like she imitates what she thinks will sound well and just goes with it.
But, if people like that… there’s nothing I can change about. Our children are being exposed to a lot of things really early, which is why I think some things she does is questionable now that she is more known. She is the only female rap artist out there and that’s why she’s getting show much slack… but, seriously, if she’s getting “millions” like she says; deal with the scrutiny.

Female rappers have all ways been around, its just the industry chose
to look away. I have been a fan of Nikki since day 1 and honestly the poet is right you can see the changes that has taken place from her early days as an emcee to her new
days as a branded product. Nicki went from representing for us to trying to be a white pop artist hence lady gaga, she is an industry puppet, blonde hair, blue eyes really??…As far as no other female
rapper Necole, you need to check out SANTA I truly feel that SANTA is and will be Nicki Minaj biggest threat. She just won (Nicki and Remy won also before blowing up)best female rapper at the underground music awards, and this chick puts on a hell of a show, whats crazy is that I’ve been a fan of SANTAs since
early 2005 when she was signed to sotti, she’s an independent artist
and i respect that she adds class to the game and she’s an educated sister, but you guys wont know about her nether will necole talk about her because this industry is driven by co-signers and big names you guys forget about the tru art form that brought hiphop to be….like they said in alot of the blogs Nicki is a amazing artist but I really cant wait to see other females like SANTA to give her a run for her money, after all the are calling this chick the “Hip-Hop Beyonce”
check her out live and tell me if nicki aint got a problem
Sidenote+ I love nicki and all though I do not know SANTA personally, I knw good
music and this girl is talented especially cause she raps in french, english and can dance.

Co-Sign!!! Rap is in the toilet, in my opinion, because not matter how much you try to support real artists with substance they still don’t get commercial success. I was one of the people who signed the online petition for Lupe Fiasco’s album to be released. Did that petition change anything? No. From my last update his album is still not being released. From what I’ve seen in my adult life (23 years old) for a woman to have commercial success in the music industry she has to be a sex symbol. Its not about lyrics anymore. And I don’t think this girl was bashing Nicki with her poem, I think she was bashing what Nicki stands for. In the past couple years you can’t turn on the t.v. without seeing someone woman degrading herself. There’s things that bother me about nicki minaj and I speak up about it on and off the blog just as if I speak up about every black woman that I feel is degrading herself. I want better for us. I think we have so much worth. And in my opinion, nothing about Nicki minaj exudes a confident, black woman comfortable in her own skin. Last note, I don’t give a damn about her hussle, just because something earns me a dollar doesn’t mean i’m gonna do it.

saying nicky is the best female rapper ever, seriously her lyrics are
wack, she has no talent in writing if what came out is pretty much
much what she does..and what worrying me in the level of
intelligence of her fans :this generation 15-24, when they
applauded her verses, ??????
We used to love Lil kim and foxy back then but never claim they were the best ever

I’m not surprised this poem went over the heads of many. I’m a bit disappointed Necole Bitchie feels as though the poet didn’t say much. Because in a very short amount of time, she said A WHOLE LOT! I love the way she did it. It was still respectful. No one is asking Nicki to be the savior of Hip Hop or represent for all females. No one woman SHOULD. Many are asking that she not make a mockery out of Hip Hop or turn herself into a minstrel show to do it. That’s what this piece was about. Kudos to the young poet.

It’s very sad and disappointing! This girl spoke TRUTH. Most people are stans so they are in denal and will twist up Jasmine Mans words and belittle her poem! She spoke for the sake of women and ya’ll are just making excuses for Nicky’s character that actually makes these little girls backwards instead of growing up. Nicky is about 30. What women of that age would really idolize a BARBIE???? Seriously?!!!! I never really comment on this site but I find it disusting how people are actually sticking up for this clown. ok…. PEOPLE please pay attention. this whole world is like crabs in a bucket. yes if the poet disagrees she has every right to speak her mind. but then the mesg gets lost in “OH SHE GOT AT NICKI” and even one of the poet’s friends posted a video saying “NICKI MINAJ JUST GOT ETHERED”. corny much???? i am entertained by nicki minaj in the way that i like some of the songs and others make me laugh bcuz it’s…. laughable. on the flip, i can also say that some of the points that the poet makes are valid. BUUUUUUUUUT we also need to remember that we’ve seen nicki grow and change alot over the years. alot of the things that the poet spoke on are being slowly edited out of her persona. she was a girl just like some of us from around the way and she was trying to get on. she’s made it and had the chance to realize how many people she affects… i can see and appreciate the change. everybody wana throw stones but please remember she was elected by the streets FIRST. ok? so she gave us street shit… duh. now she’s in a diff world and we will slowly see that come from her. IT’S A PROCESS. let this woman live! some of your favorite entertainers are not squeaky clean when it comes to the footprint they’ve left on our generation. take responsibility for yourselves, for your children, for your sis/cousin/bro and for your own goals and let this be what it is: ENTERTAINMENT. i am not at all at a loss for understanding the impact that those in the public eye can hve on culture/society as a whole…. but the bitch did not set us back 100 yrs by wearing a pink wig and and making funny faces. GET OVER IT. appreciate the poet’s form of expression and move on. i’ll bet my last that nicki winds up making a better overall impression on music/entertainment than you could ever imagine. give her a chance to e great before you try to cut her down for her methods of getting there. she even said in a song of a old mixtape ” i take the loss so my brother won’t have to” or smthng like that. MEANING she knows that’s she’s sacrificing parts of her life for the better of her family. and not in illuminatti way u psychos…. but now that she’s in a position to do better, let’s give her a chance. AND STOP SAYING SHE’S TRYING TO BE WHITE. ppl grow and change when they are exposed to new things. i’m out bcuz even with all that my oint will be missed. AYE NECOLE i wanna submit article for the site. how do i do that??

Kim, and Foxy…talented??? You must forget that even in their time they got bashed for doing the same thing Nicki is doing. A lot of people said they didn’t write their own ish, the Biggie’s and Jay-Z’s of the world were writing their rhymes. They are overly sexual and they use their sexuality to sell albums, they are ruining the rap game for the MC Lytes, Queen Latifah’s, and Nonchalant’s, Rah Digga’s of the world. So, it seems to look like everybody needs a scapegoat. And for Tge record, I DO think Kim and Foxy are talented, I was just trying to price a point. Somebody is always going to cone at you when you’re successful. You don’t like it, DON’T LISTEN!!! There are tons of other highly educated, eloquent female emcees to listen to. Like I said when I first heard this spoken word artist, she sure is emotional and knows enough of her rhymes for being someone that is not a fan.

It’s really lowered my opinion of this blog. Alot of intelligent
comments were deleted, which makes me wonder what the true reason is for doing so.
Have bloggers developed the same thin skin celebrities have? Maybe they believe they are celebrities themselves now (which is a negative- bloggers are essentially part of the media now, and even though media figured are seen everyday, doesn’t make them celebs)? Can readers of a blog not give meaningful
discussions for fear that they may “show up” the perspective of the blogger?
I’m done, I’m just sayin’. That’s really lame.

Good write up Necole. I think people expect her to cover everything and be successful. She is in her own lane and some of us can appreciate some of her music. I would appreciate all the naysers and people who want her to fail to point out someone CURRENTLY doing it better. There is silence. This Jasmin made fine points, but I’d like to hear more from her or others who think like her. Show us the talent.

I saw her poem in a similar fashion. Jasmine Mans seems to be stating both fact and issuing a warning. I don’t think she’s expecting Nicki to be a female MCs in one at all. Besides the fact that the music industry over-sexualizes female rappers, Jasmine was warning Nicki that her success and popularity will be short-lived. Eventually, she will not be the “It” girl and the music industry will “Lauryn Hill” her, i.e, move on to the next one.

I like it…. but I agree w/ NB’s comment alot more…. I feel her stance on it, but like NB said, there’s so much pressure riding on her to be ‘every woman’ and it’s impossible to put that type of standard on someone. I am a Nicki Minaj fan, however, I can definitely appreciate this poem. I would like to hear something from Nicki reminiscent of the ‘ladies first’ type anthems of the late 80′s and early 90′s, but still be NICK, and not them…. again, it’s borderline impossible.

I dont think there is pressure on NM to be every woman. From my interpretation, I gathered that she was saying NM or any female rapper should be themselves rather than a “puppet” or porcelain doll. Mostly everything about her is fake: hair, eyes, nails, butt, teeth, nose, her voice, etc. etc. etc. People are compromising way to much. Compromise is fine, but compromise to a certain point becomes surrender, and it seems that most artist have surrendered.

Okay, the problem with Nicki is that she PURPOSELY tries to appeal to the KIDS. Wit the baby voices, funny faces, idolizing a BARBIE. Kim called herself a Barbie but she never started a Barbie/Ken movement. My mother listed to Kim and Foxy but that never affected me because everything Kim did, to the way she rapped and her person wasn’t KIDDISH like Nicki. Nicki uses all her kiddish antics to pull the kids her way which isn’t right when you look at her songs (even though they aren’t the nastiness) and they way she dresses. Her making herself the HEAD BARBIE in her little movement is basically telling these LITTLE girls “follow me.” Like what grown individual takes a women pushing 30 serious other than kids? They know that their doing! She came into the game one way and when her and her camp felt that know one was really checking for her she became a record label forced upon gimmick. #imout

i love her stage presence!
i agree with a lot of the points she makes. i do not agree, however, with nicki minaj being blamed for “everything that’s wrong with a lot of black women today…” when women’s sexuality was being exploited and commodified way before hip hop even uttered its first syllables. there is nothing wrong with a female being sexually driven and illustrating that through a music video and/or her music. and no shade is directed to anyone on this particular post, but i find it very hypocritical that so many of us within the black community complain when artists like waka flocka and nicki minaj gain fame because they’re “shallow” or “stupid” or “a gimmick”, yet we fail to lend large support to politically motivated rap. (ie; lupe fiasco).
nicki’s job is to entertain, which she does. she is not obligated to stand in as a “race artist” whose job is to represent millions of black women around the world by ignoring her own desires and visions. yes, i understand that not everyone will agree with nicki minaj being a sex symbol, but not all music is meant to provoke social change. the standards we place on our black artists are sometimes ridiculous. we don’t consider it “legitimate” unless it’s speaking about changing the world, and that shouldn’t be.
just my five cents.

i love nicki but i gotta give that poet props. it was really good even though i don’t agree with the message entirely. Like Nicole said, Nicki is the only female MC out right now and so naturally she’s the only target for critics, but aside from Check It Out (which is more of a will.i.am song than nicki), she’s made original music that’s never tried to conform to what’s popular on radio. She’s not gonna be the next Lauryn Hill or Queen Latifah or Rah Digga or Missy or Eve or Salt n Pepa or Kim or Foxy, she’s gonna be Nicki. she has her own persona, her own artistry and she has her own place in the music industry. So while people can criticize her, she has generated buzz for a female MC that I haven’t seen in a while, and as a woman, I can appreciate and honor that.

the music the female rapper’s put out. It’s soo many other positive and much ‘iller’ femcees than NM out,
especially in the underground industry such as myself, that want to change the face of female rappers.
We just don’t get a chance because the listeners of the mainstream artists are so conditioned and brainwashed
to think ‘oh, this is what we’ve been missing. minaj is the savior of of women in hip hop!’. Bull****. Until
the hip hop audience wakes up and realize that this is not what’s supposed to be going down,
female rappers will continue to be stereotyped and demeaned. Kudos to Jasmine Mans!

So with that power make something of it. Dont just be another sex symbol she has the lyrics to stand beside any man and spit 16 and hang i.e Monster. Just use the power that Nicki Minaj has and be the role model don’t let what the industry thinks a female rapper should intale be what she turns into. I feel like Nicki Minaj is a great rapper with her own identity andeveryone should just let her do her because thats what got her noticed and everyone talking about her and getting her a record deal in the first place. NO NEED FOR HATE.. she is a female and all females should embrace that we are in the age of empowering woman hope on board.

But then will turn around and praise other female rappers who were way more sexually provocative than her. I’m in my 30′s so I was apart of the female rap era and I loved Kim & Foxy but also loved Missy & Lauryn, its not her fault there is no other female mc out who is different but just as popular as she is, bottom line Nikki can only do Nikki she not here to save the game for female mc’s I’m just glad she opened the door again!

Nicki isn’t targeting the young audience. She’s targeting anyone who’s interested. As a mother, and as my mother did when I was growing up, I moniter anything and everything my kids see, hear, learn. Even as a teenager the channels that I watched, the music that I listened to, etc, was monitored… that’s a part of parenting. That made all the difference. Nicki can’t help who listens to her, what parents allow. She’s an entertainer. Period, point, blank. I respect her hustle, she’s making her money and people are allowing it to happen. No one should blame NICKI for “destroying the youth”… blame the youth, the media, the parents…

Hmmm Necole – Sidebar “maybe I’m reading too much into that small section of your comment but I must say this”: I think Common is in the class of Nas, Lupe Fiasco etc & probably Kanye of the 1st album – then Jay-Z is in there with Puffy who really can’t rap, Biggie etc – he’s not even a Tupac because Tupac rapped about real issues as well like Common etc. But anyway, you are on point about people always giving Nicki a hard time for no good reason – they need to let this woman live – I really don’t understand where all the hate comes from for her – she’s doing her thing just like the others before her & we must understand her career is her business, a business – however she got to the point & whatever she changed when she got there – it was her choice because she is looking to the future of where she wants to take her career and her life to fill her pockets and no one else’s. People need to just enjoy music & stop putting pressure on these celebs to be what they want them to be – their hero or idol – no one is your idol but God/Yahweh/Jehovah or whatever else you call the creator. Yes, it seems that it comes with the territory of stardom to be all that others want to be – but I think that pressure comes more from the media than anything else – no these so called parents because if you are a good parent you would know better. Moreover as your kids get older – they have to socialize without you with the rest of the world – if you give them a great foundation to fall on then you shouldn’t be worried because we are all here on our own journey – good and bad. Let Nicki Be Great People.

Oh please lol. Nicki haters will say ANYTHING against her. This lil girl needs to sit down choosing the biggest female rapper right now to boost her fame. Now she’s on blogs. Not for her talent because I’m sure this wasnt her first poem but for talking about Nicki Minaj.

I’m trying to figure out who is going around pinning badges on folks to tell others who they are supposed to be. Be who YOU want to be, however you want to be it. And those that don’t like it….DO NOT HAVE TO LOOK OR LISTEN. What would you say to me if I decided to advise Ms. Mans to leave out the animation when she presents her poetry?
BOTTOM LINE: Who the f*ck are you to tell me what to say or do?!

I agree with Poet. Nicki’s whole vibe is honestly immature and wack. She’s on her grind, though. I’ll definitely give her that. But I mean, her lyrics are just weak. The grown woman wanting to be a Barbie is ridiculous. Obviously Minaj has some type of appeal…why push a vacuous, empty persona? Come on. Do better, ma. And since I’m not supporting the Nicki bandwagon, I expect this comment to be deleted.

I don’t think anyone expects Nicki to be what they’re looking or missing in female rappers. Nicki has created something massive with the whole Barbie moment. However, it’s one,the fact that she is trying to appeal to younger kids and she’s not a good role model. Two, she isn’t being herself, she’s fake. She came out as if she was into girls, her whole body has been reconstructed and none of that is true. If you have to do that to sell by all means do your thing boo boo but don’t expect me to feel like you’re oh so talented. In my opinion if you’re really talented you won’t need nor want a gimmick.

That was on Kim “HardCore” album. But the rest of her albums were hard but sexy. There was a balance and it wasn’t overly sexual. And not all artist have a gimmick. A Gimmick is glamorizing something that doesn’t need to be glamorized. Sex is apart of life, a Barbie isn’t.

How do you guys sit and hate some one so damm much? If
you don’t like her music nor her you know what you do? Change
the channel and change the radio station. You don’t want
your kids listening to her then don’t let them. The poet
had certain points but I’m pretty sure she has listened
to Lil Kim’s Magic stick and the rest of raunchy things she
has done. Nicki also turned down the whole raunchy things
for a reason because she knows she has lil teens listening
to her so when she puts out a song like right through me
everyone still comes down her throat wtf! I’m so confused.

I totally i agree and thats the point I think people LIKE to miss that nicki has changed her imager ALOT then when she 1st came out but shes not going to change who she is every single artist isnt for everybody but because Nicki Minaj has the hype and is a women she is treated 10x worse then lets say a wacka flack fame who barley can read and write and talks pure garbage but yet no one gets on him like Nicki Minaj.

I wouldn’t say that I’m a Nicki fan. I do listen to some things that she is on, Wacka Flack is not out there promoting the fact being plastic is a good thing. No young female is even checking for him like they are checking for Nicki. My issue is who is she trying to gain the attention of with this “Barbie movement” I’m sure it isn’t grown women. My 11 year old don’t play with barbie, how in the hell do I look like talking about “I’m Barbie Bitch.”
While Kim did promote sexually explicit things, I was not allowed to hear that type of music nor was it shoved in my face on every radio station. Check what age these young girls are hearing Nicki. She was just on 106 & Park and these little girls were basically crying over her… While it’s not Nicki’s job to raise someone else child, she shouldn’t be an enabler by telling these little girls to be plastic barbie. There is nothing positive about “I’m barbie bitch” sorry there just isn’t!

@wower I think me and you are the only ones who have some
type of sense. She never came out her mouth telling everyone
to become plastic. Some of you take things to serious in
my opinion but like I stated before if you don’t like her
don’t listen or watch her. As for waka flocka I don’t
even wanna get on about him he’s just um different lol.

This is the thing. Let you give me you guys the run down. I personally know Onika. Went to LaGuardia with her.Nicki Minaj is a professional endeavor. Nicki has a lot of talent can sing rap dance and act. However when you sign to a major label you represent the image of that label. Young Money’s ambition is to have the MOST COMMERCIAL MC’s of all time. They do not market to the underground. Onika Maraj was the queen of NYC Underground. When she signed to young money she had to but into their vision. Is she a sell out know. There are millions who never of Nicki before Five Star chick or her features. She is reaching people that she never could reach as an undergroung MC. Love or hate her everyone in 2010 knows who she is. At the same time she is breaking ground and winning awards that she never could have won underground. Life is about evolution. Trust me when I tell you Onika “President of the NYC” is still very much alive.
