The Geek in Residence program connects ‘geeks’ (technically confident artists and creatively confident technicians) with arts organisations through a temporary subsidised secondment scheme. This fund allows the Australia Council to enable digital artists and technicians to share their skills and experiences with arts workers. Geeks will be able to share their passion for solving unknown technological problems in creative situations, and arts workers will feel better equipped to work in digital spaces.

In 2011 The Subtle Technologies Festival celebrates its 14th year of bringing people together to promote wonder, incite creativity and spark innovation across disciplines. The festival provides a forum to pose and explore questions and inspire work at the intersection of art, science and technology  through symposia, exhibitions, workshops, screenings and performances.  For 2011 the festival will be moving away from a single theme in an attempt to foster new relationships and create new inter-disciplines and a diverse program will be assembled to represent a wide range of subjects and disciplines.  What does the future hold in terms of interdisciplinary work? What approaches can we take to foster inter-cultural exchanges  when it comes to science or technology based work?  How do we make complex  scientific systems more accessible to artists as tools for creating new work? The festival is interested in hearing successful stories from artists and scientists working together – and is equally interested in hearing about some of the issues that prevent disciplines from having stronger collaborations.

What are Crush Videos?
Crush videos feature small live animals, such as kittens, puppies, reptiles, mice and rabbits being slowly tortured in the most horrific ways imaginable; including being burnt alive, cut with pruning sheers, nailed to the floor, skinned alive, beaten, stabbed, and having their limbs broken.

All of these videos share a common theme: the animals are incrementally crushed by a woman with high heels/other body parts. Most people view these materials for sexual gratification, but these videos are becoming increasingly popular just for their shock value alone on “gore sites”.

The site consists of a  collection of questions and answers created, edited, and organized by users. To get started, sign-up using your Facebook or Twitter account and   then you’re free to ask or answer any question. See bicycle parts, frames and components transformed from their typical functionalities into works of art. The Circular Bike comprises donated bicycles from Monash University’s Uni-Cycle bike share scheme. The bikes have been deconstructed from their singular bike form and reassembled to create a single, circular structure that can be ridden and enjoyed by many.

Contrasting the traditional chandelier with the functional form of the bicycle wheel, the Bicycle Chandelier merges the mechanical with the decorative to create a suspended work of art. Created using lights, wheels and aluminium rims donated by Velocity Wheels.

Fest runs (cycles through to): 25th – 28th November, 2010

How would you capture the Reel Australia?

The Australia Day Council of NSW (ADCNSW) has launched the inaugural Reel Australia Short Film competition, giving short film enthusiasts across the country the opportunity to be recognised by telling the real Australian story through film.

Proudly supported by the Australian Film Institute (AFI), the ADCNSW is calling on all Australians to grab their video cameras, explore and share their interpretations of who we are as a nation in a two minute film.

“One of Australia’s favorite leisure activities is indeed attending the cinema and Reel Australia arrives amid exciting times as the global box office for this year’s Australian films pushes beyond $100m. We’ll be watching this competition closely, both for compelling reels about what it means to be Australian, but also of course for promising new talent!” says AFI CEO Damian Trewhella.
