Video game consoles have a life of roughly five to six years. That's the way it's been since we shoved the Famicon under the bottom bunk in favor of the Super Famicon, all the way up to the newest line of gamer hardware. We just checked our calendars, and sure enough it's been five years since the last group of consoles - the Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii, and Playstation 3 - hit the market, so it seems like E3 2011 might be the festival where the announcements, and embarrassing early-project names, come rolling out. Of course, it's entirely possible that this new magical console trio is the one that breaks the mold, but we're not betting on it. Sure, the last round had the benefit of internet connectivity for unlimited updates and some pretty handy peripherals, including the supposedly game-changing Playstation Move and Microsoft Kinect, but nothing spells profits like being the first out the gate with the next big thing. So slap on your Wario hat, little buddy, we'll see you at the convention hall.
