Project Open Hand News: Thanksgiving Update

Hi all– I am a sticky post! And I shall stay sticky until Thanksgiving.

———

Can you believe it is almost Thanksgiving already?  Time just flew by this year.  Just got this hot-off-the-press release from Project Open Hand.  Please help them if you can. Thank you!

———-

Project Open Hand Prepares Thousands of Thanksgiving Meals

SAN FRANCISCO,CA – The Thanksgiving holidays are an especially busy time at Project Open Hand, a local non-profit food relief organization that prepares and delivers food to seniors, people living with HIV and breast cancer, and the homebound critically ill. Project Open Hand chefs slow roast a whopping 3,200 pounds of turkey and season it with a spice rub of Kosher salt, white pepper, sage, thyme, paprika, cumin, and granulated onion and garlic. They also make a mouth-watering mashed potato with warm milk, butter, salt and pepper, and 1,100 lbs of potatoes. Other sides include 25 cases of corn bread stuffing, 1,500 lbs of fresh green beans and peas with pearl onions, 200 lbs of cranberry sauce, 80 gallons of turkey gravy, and of course, 400 pumpkin pies. For a non-profit organization that prepares food on such a large scale, the food is cooked with extraordinary care and compassion. On Thanksgiving Day, Project Open Hand, commemorating its 25th year of service to the community, will deliver a hot meal to over 2,600 people homebound with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses. “We try to prepare the same festive meal that many of us take for granted and deliver it to people who are less fortunate,” says Executive Director Tom Nolan. “For our neighbors who are sick and alone, the holidays should still bring good food and healing comfort,” says Nolan. The holidays can also prove to be a very lonely time for many isolated seniors. Project Open Hand tries to fight this loneliness by providing a special meal and celebrations at the 26 senior centers in their Senior Lunch Program. This year their senior clients will enjoy a festive lunch comprised of roast turkey breast with gravy, mashed sweet potatoes, cornbread dressing, green beans, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and apple juice. Project Open Hand will serve over 1,400 Thanksgiving meals to seniors at community sites throughout the city. During the holidays, the organization has an increased need for volunteers and monetary donations. If you’re looking for a way to give back to your community this holiday season visit Project Open Hand’s website at www.openhand.org or call (415) 447-2300.

Whatever rocks your boat…not judging.

Ah…sorry, I digress.

Not in any order or preference, I am thankful for:

group lunch @ Bing Crosby’s Restaurant

My coworkers and I decided to come to this restaurant for lunch the other day.  Prior to this, one of our other coworker who does a lot of event planning decided this is a good place to go, so we were very excited and probably held some high expectations.

I have to say that their service was pretty friendly and I do like the decor of the restaurant though it is a theme restaurant, but the food was just so-so.

Throughout the entire meal, I heard my coworkers complaining about their food:  shrimp was overdone, salmon too oily, bread wasn’t tasty enough, etc.

I had the “Road to Morocco” dish, an appetizer plate with mezzes and pita bread and olives, so I think I had the best dish because you can’t really mess that up.

IMHO, their crab cakes are pretty good too, but small, so if you like to share, Don’t. :)    One dish I do like a lot from this restaurant is their molten chocolate cake and according to our server, it was made in-house from scratch. YUMMY.

The traffic on Main Street going toward this restaurant was insane and did not help our experience.  My coworker who drove us started rattling all the reasons why she doesn’t like Walnut Creek…

“What do people do around here except shop and hold expensive purses, pooches, and drive big SUVs?   Do they just circle around here all day?!?  After they shop, they are probably going to a SSSSPPPPPPAAAA, and then they are probably going to meet their friend Buffy and have cocktails!”

L-O-L!!!

This coming from a woman that I had no idea would say such things.

Got to love my coworkers. Funny bunch.  But I disagree about living in Walnut Creek though.  It’s not San Francisco, but I do like it.  And hey, nothing wrong with meeting Buffy and having cocktails in my opinion.  Especially if Buffy is treating. :)

It has been a few weeks since I came back from Montreal, yet I am still quite smitten with it.   Something about that city…  I don’t know.   Maybe I just need to travel  more often…  ;)

Totally different type of energy but I like it.

One of the simple, yet yummy things I found in Marche Jean-Talon (read my write-up on Marche Jean-Talon) in Montreal is this delicious Pave Aux Amandes.  Took a bite, rolled my eyes back in bliss…  Also, there’s a crepe place right by the patisserie, and you can get a really good hot chocolate across the way, so really, you can’t beat it.

Patisseries le Ryad is located inside the Marche Jean-Talon.

Movie: Country Strong

Not a food post.

I love country music and this one looks like a good movie.  I can’t wait to see it!  Personally, I think Gwyneth sings well and from the movie trailer, I thought her performance was very convincing and she sounded so very pretty.

Movie Trailer:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi-T8_2kt-8&NR=1&feature=fvwp

Gwyneth Paltrow plays the main character Kelly Canter

Tim McGraw plays Ed  (husband/manager of Kelly Canter)

Leighton Meeister from Gossip Girl is also in this movie…

Garrett Hedlund

Marshall Chapman

This is a Chinese Deli where people come to eat and buy prepared food home.  We came here months ago and had the duck and roast pork.  Total hole-in-the-wall.  I am not saying it’s bad, but they are inconsistent.  We had really good & cheap food here, and then the next time, it was bad & cheap.  Mostly, you have to look at the food and see if you like it that day.  There are a few other deli places in C-Town that have good quality roasts also, but this place’s known for their duck.

what we got

A bunch of us came here after dinner recently because this was one of my friend’s favorite places, but it was just okay.  Not great, not bad, but not great.  Even she was a bit underwhelmed. Maybe it was just a bad day?  I don’t know.  I like their Bavarian creame though. Hmmm…try that.

Before I went to Montreal, we stopped in at Ella’s for brunch.  A lot of people, but so worth the wait….  (By the way, I don’t have a lot to say lately, so I will let the pictures do the talking…)
