A deeper look into IK Multimedia’s newborn, iRig.
AmpliTube has been one of my favorites softwares since its launch. I have done quite all of my guitar work with the help of it. So far, it has been an invaluable source of satisfaction for me.
AmpliTube is now available on the iPhone, and I assume I’m one of the first customers to have pre-ordered the little interface, baptized “iRig” needed to make it run on Apple’s device.
It comes out as a flawlessly made little black cylinder with an input for a regular guitar/bass jack at the bottom, a built-in cable to connect the interface to the iPhone (via the earkit plug) and last, a 1/8″ connector to plug powered speakers, or an earkit.
I didn’t used the first option yet, but I plan to do it soon. I really love to use my iPhone on stage (I already use fm synths apps), even if it pisses off the sound engineer and the blackberry owners! Nothing against blackberries there, I had one too and it’s a great product, but not for my needs.
The perspective of being able to grab my guitar or bass even in the middle of the night, running it through a user-friendly interface, with up to 36 presets on-the-fly (with instant à-la-carte purchase of legendary stompboxes and amps), is something I craved for decades long… It is now a reality, and not only is the sound you can get out of it awesome: it is simply incredible and way beyond realistic for such a small device as an iPhone!
It is also a really nice practice tool: with iRig, you hear what you play, and only what you play! There is no loss, no mess with the acoustic scheme of the place you are in.
If you’re a shredder who wants to refine his/her sweep picking and arpeggio technique, it is perfect. You’ll be amazed to hear that your playing wasn’t what you thought (for better or worse!)
In any case, you will be blown away by the accuracy of IK Muktimedia’s device.
I’m absolutely confident that iRig will make you be a better player.
What about recording, you may ask?
Well, it functions perfectly with light softwares like Reaper, so I won’t worry, and I won’t mind a try with ProTools.
Bottom line: iRig is a great product, though for a targeted audience. It has many advantages and one which is above each others: you hear ONLY what you play. Is there a better tool to become a great player?
It is not only a hype toy, but a revolution in the way of learning and honing one’s skills!

PS (july 25th): the iRig is now available for the iPad!
