Real Virginia Wedding: Sara + Bill, Part II

What a sweet, happy couple!  I still can’t get over how lovely Sara’s bouquet (courtesy of Holly Chapple) is.  Perfect for a fall wedding, don’t you think?  The newlyweds celebrated their marriage with a chic reception at Virginia’s historic Whitehall Manor.  Like the bridesmaids’ bright, flowy frocks, I love that S + B went with a cheery fall color to accent their elegant ballroom.  Want more?  Head on over to photographer Kristen Gardner’s blog post from the big day!

BERJAYA

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I went shopping for my dress in February during the crazy snow storm.  It was fine, because we went shopping in Boston, but unfortunately my oldest sister could not get a flight out to Massachusetts from anywhere in Virginia.  My mom and middle sister were still able to come up,  though, so we carried on.  We only went to one store, and as luck would have it, it was the first dress I tried on.
Describe your wedding flowers:
I am not much of a flower person, so it was really hard for me to have a vision of what I wanted.  Luckily, we were able to work with an incredibly talented florist, who had also designed the flowers for both of my sisters’ weddings.  Holly created exactly what we were looking for, without us ever really being able to express it to her.  She included succulents, beautiful cabbage roses, wheat, seeded eucalyptus and lambs ear in the arrangements.  Bill is a hunter, so she even added a few pheasant and ostrich feathers to my bouquet and his boutonniere for a personal touch.
Describe your wedding cake:
Cake is not our favorite dessert in the world, but we do love pies.  In lieu of a traditional wedding cake, we would serve miniature pies in four different flavors: pumpkin, lemon chess, apple and chocolate pecan.  It was hard to get the traditionalists in our family on board, but once they saw the pies, I think they quickly changed their minds!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
Recapping with each other at the end of the day.  We hadn’t been alone together since the beginning of the week, so it was awesome to catch up with each other and go over the day.  We ordered late night room service and talked non-stop.  It finally felt like we were married!

What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?  We are looking forward to just spending time together.  Wedding planning is fun but definitely takes up a lot of time, so it is nice to have that back. We also are busy planning our honeymoon to Italy this February!

Real Virginia Wedding: Sara + Bill, Part I

If you know me, then you know the precious ring bearers (in complementary cardigans, no less!) are probably my favorite detail in Sara + Bill’s autumn wedding at the Whitehall Manor, photographed by Kristen Gardner.  I kid.  (Sort of.)  Other things I love, besides the too-cute attendants and the crisp, fall setting?  Holly Heider Chapple’s rustic rose arrangements, for one, and the bride’s ruched gown from The Bridal Secret.  One last love?  The maids’ flowy J. Crew frocks in punchy coral!

BERJAYA

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.  Mutual friends of ours had two extra tickets to a Red Sox/Orioles baseball game in Baltimore.  I was living in Virginia at the time, and Bill was in New York.  He took a last minute train down and I got off of work a little early.  We had never met each other, had no intentions of hitting it off, and our mutual friends certainly did not expect the weekend to turn out the way it did.  I picked Bill up at Union Station in D.C. on my way home from work, and we instantly connected.  By the time he had to leave on Sunday, I was convinced he was trying to miss his train back to NY just to stay a little bit longer.  We pretty much started dating right away, and had a long distance relationship for about a year-and-a-half.  After that, he moved to Massachusetts for work, and I followed a few months later.
Describe the proposal.
We are fairly low-key people, so if he told me to dress up or had something out the ordinary planned, I would have known what was up!   We had just gotten home from running some errands after work.  He asked if I wanted to have s’mores, one of my most favorite treats, while we watched a movie we had rented.  I said of course, so he made a batch and came out with the ring hidden underneath the plate.  As soon as he handed me the plate, he got down on one knee and proposed.  I think I asked him if he was kidding almost a thousand times!
Three adjectives that describe the day are:
Personal, laidback and joyful.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was:
Our wedding party.  Bill has two older brothers and I have two older sisters, as well as great friends.  It was really special to have them stand up with us as we exchanged our vows.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration?   What was Southern about your wedding?
With Bill’s family being from the North, we wanted to include some fun touches of the South we knew everyone would enjoy.  We served pulled pork barbeque and passed hot apple cider in mason jars during the cocktail hour.  A fun blue grass band performed out on the lawn, and we had apple cider donuts as favors.

Southern Engagement Shoot: Laura + Nate

The final lovely in this week's trio of engagement shoots come to us from Jeremy Harwell.  Jeremy shot Laura + Nate in Charleston, one of his (and their) favorite cities.  As he says, "Laura and Nate fell in love there.  We went back to the very park bench where Nate proposed, and they brought along their dog to be part of the session of joyousness.  Laura also wore her grandmother's shoes, which her mother had also worn.  We ended up at Middleton Place, where their wedding will be held next June.  It is a national historic landmark, with the oldest landscaped gardens nestled along the banks of the Ashley River.  Laura and Nate are both architects, so this venue is a perfect fit."

Thanks so much for sharing, Jeremy!  Readers, you can peek at a few more images on his blog here.

Good luck with the rest of wedding planning, Laura + Nate!

Southern Engagement Shoot: Lindsay + Chris

BERJAYA

Another day, another lovely engagement shoot, this time from Gabe Aceves. Lindsay + Chris brought Gabe out to their favorite working farm and bed & breakfast, Smithfield Farm, located in northern Virginia.  As he noted, it's quiet and beautiful and the couple loves to stay there on romantic weekend getaways.  Sounds like the perfect spot for a personal e-shoot to us!

Thanks again for sharing, Lindsay, Chris, and Gabe!

Southern Engagement Shoot: Sarah + Jon

'Tis the season for not only turkey and Christmas trees but engagements!  And we all know what happens after someone gets down on one knee... an engagement shoot!  This week, we'll be bringing you three different takes on the engagement session, each sweet and simple and stunningly photographed.  No awkward props, no awkward poses, just lovely people being photographed by lovely photographers in lovely places.

Today, we're starting things off with a session from Lauren Larsen.  Sarah + Jon chose to be photographed on his family's ranch, and we agree that they couldn't have chosen a more beautifully rustic or meaningful location.  Well done, you two!  (You three, including the talented Lauren -- see more on her blog here!)

Thanks again for sharing, Sarah + Jon!  Good luck with the rest of wedding planning!

Winners :: Davie and Chiyo Clutch

Once upon a time a Southern Weddings editor spent hours reading every entry for a giveaway. She was completely amazed that strangers would open their hearts and tell such touching stories of love. The SW editor sat back after reading all of the comments and took a moment to reflect over the immense power of giving. Each and every entry told a story about how a gift had impacted someone's life in a very personal way.

The Southern Weddings editor was so glad that she had been given the gift of a great job where she had the opportunity to give to others. She was also glad that the gift she was able to give away this week was just plain awesome (and stylish). She loved Davie and Chiyo clutches with their big satin bows and felt that they would make perfect gifts for Southern Weddings readers.

BERJAYA

Congratulations to Wendy and Tara, who will each win a Davie and Chiyo clutch!

Once upon a time a lady not so young, but young at heart received the gift of friendship, love and caring. The odd thing is that the gentleman and I knew of each other in high school although we had different friends. After approximately 10 years had passed and we were both in other relationships he saw me walking down a busy city street looking for a job. The funny thing is that he was on a bus passing by, got off at the next stop and ran back to say hello, calling me by name. I felt bad that I didn't remember his name. I remembered that he had been an athlete in school (I was a cheerleader and big nerd). We chatted, I told him I was married and had a daughter. Years later told me that his heart sank as he had hoped I was available. He also told me that he had told his high school friends that he was going to date me some day. Needless to say more time passed. Now we are about 20 years out from high school, I am divorced and the mother of two daughters. I ran into a friend from high school and we had lunch. After getting caught up we decided wee would meet again soon. In the meantime, my friend told "him" that she had seen me, that I was divorced and doing well. He asked lots of questions including a request for my telephone number. Some time later I received a call from "him". From that day forward, we spent hours talking on the telephone. During one of these telephone calls he invited me to drop by his office for lunch if I was ever in the area. That day came and I dropped in. While waiting for him to come out, I wondered what he looked like because I could not remember. When I saw him, recognition hit me square in the face. We began to spend time together as friends because we were both in relationships and both had daughters. Long story short, we have remained friends to this very day. We spent many more hours on the telephone and on outings with and without our children. (He was the first man I spent time with that was allowed to be around my daughters) The girls really liked him and said I should "date" him. He took the time to find places I had not visited, restaurants I had not dined in and activities that I had not done. This was no little feat as I had always traveled, eaten out frequently, was always busy doing something. I loved this about him. This "friendship" continued for a little more than two years as our dating relationships fell by the wayside. It wasn't until then that we kissed. Wow, what had I been waiting for??? Our friendship grew into love. And 26 years after our first encounter, he proposed and we were married. Keep believing in happy endings.

Once Upon a Time... my boyfriend of 6 1/2 years swore to me he had the best Christmas present ever for me... I knew it wasn't a ring, since I was sure he wasn't ready to propose, but he talked it up like it was going to be the GREATEST thing EVER. Well, on Christmas morning, I opened a small box that had a European Travel Guide book in it with a note and a debit card that said 'I can't wait for you to plan the best trip of our lives, I know how you wanted to go to Europe with me and I know how much you like to plan stuff. I love you'. After 9 months of planning and waiting to finally get to 'use' my Christmas present, we arrived in Switzerland, where my boyfriend insisted we go first on our trip, and the next morning we took a hike and he propsed to me on top of a mountain in Switzerland, in the same city his grandfather proposed to his grandmother in 65 years ago. That was his plan all along. And they lived happily ever after!

Military Proposal in Honor of Veteran's Day

In honor of Veteran's Day, we thought we'd share this lovely proposal story with you.  Joe, the groom-to-be, conspired with photographer Michelle Cross to document his elaborate plan, and we're so glad he did!  In Michelle's words:

"When Joe left the house on Saturday morning, Jill was under the impression that her beau would only be gone for a half hour or so.  She began making breakfast, but was soon stopped by the knock at the front door.  When she opened the door to find her neighbor standing there with a red rose and a card, the confusion set in.  After being told she had an hour to get ready, Jill headed to a nearby lake, where she was to find rose -- and clue -- number two.  After a rowboat ride across the lake and an obstacle course challenge, she was given her second rose by Joe's fellow Marine before being directed to the National Marine Corps Museum.  What Jill thought was going to be a quick trip to the lake had turned into a day full of physical challenges, relationship trivia, and lots and lots of roses.  From the museum, Jill was sent to the Kennedy Center, the White House, the Haupt Fountains, the Washington Monument, the Starbucks on H Street, the Korean, WWII, and Vietnam memorials, and then, finally, the Lincoln Memorial.  If you lost count, that makes twelve roses, twelve challenges, and twelve Marines in the dress blues that Jill had to find.

Oh yes, she said YES!"

See the rest of the story and a few more photos on Michelle's blog!  Congratulations, Joe and Jill, and thank you for your service from all the SW ladies!

Real North Carolina Wedding: Hannah + Chas, Part II

And the effortless Southern splendor that is Hannah + Chas’ wedding continues with a down-home potluck reception at Broadacres Farm.  Yes, guests did, indeed, bring their favorite dishes to share with the newlyweds!  Emily especially loves the authentically handmade quality of H + C’s celebration.  Case in point: the three-tiered, bunting-bedecked cake made by a family friend.  Sigh.  To join her family + friends in some authentic square dancing, the bride changed into a short, vintage frock and sweet Anthropologie cardigan.  Again, we say: sigh!  Haven’t quite had your fill?  Visit Alea Moore’s blog for more!

BERJAYA

Describe your wedding flowers: a vendor at our local Farmer’s Market provided buckets of flowers the day of the wedding.  Our moms, sisters and girlfriends fashioned bouquets the morning of the wedding.
Describe your wedding cake:  I found an adorable wedding cake on Green Wedding Shoes that I felt would fit well with our non-theme theme.  We had three simple round cakes set on a cake tier with colorful paper garland and flowers encircling it.  My baker is a long time family friend that bakes cakes on the side to save funds for her own daughter’s wedding.  She collected local ingredients and whipped up a fabulous dessert.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?  Juggling finishing my master’s thesis, starting a new job, moving, and planning a wedding in 5 months.  We were really nervous about the weather and had the big challenge of planning a wedding for well under $20k.  But everything truly turnout out perfectly!!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? My favorite memory by far is our first dance.  The sun was just beginning to set and cast a warm orange glow over the field and barn.  We ran out of time to rehearse a dance, but when the band started to play the waltz, Chas knew exactly what to do and I was happy to follow.  I had no idea my dress would twirl out so beautifully but was so excited it did!  In that moment it hit me: I just married the most wonderful man in the world and we will have a beautiful life together!
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?  We are blessed to both have found our callings in the professional world as a farmer and lactation consultant and are excited to help as many folks as possible.  We now live on the farm where our wedding was held with a beagle, 4 hens, and Elvis the rooster. We look forward to hosting friends and family for more farm dinner potlucks and impromptu dance parties. We are so excited to learn what it means for our generation to farm and live simpler, sustainable lives.

Real North Carolina Wedding: Hannah + Chas, Part I

Okay, if this isn’t a true-blue Southern wedding, I don’t know what is!  Hannah + Chas were married in an intimate ceremony at their family property, Broadacres Farm.  For her wedding day, Hannah donned a custom Myeline replica of the iconic open-back Monique Lhullier "Scarlett" (we think she looks positively statuesque!), and even had her groom’s grandmother’s sixty-year old wedding buttons sewn onto her dress.  The bride’s classic Aldo riding boots and her maids’ vintage-inspired frocks (all of their own choosing) lent a sweet, ladylike feel to this North Carolina wedding.  To say Emily + I are in love with H + C’s wedding, photographed by the talented Alea Moore, would be an understatement.
BERJAYA

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.  Chas and I met as students in Raleigh, NC. He was the classic boy from NCSU, and I was the girl from the all women’s college down the road, Meredith College. We locked eyes on the dance floor of shag night at Red’s. He didn’t know how to dance, but asked me to teach him. I wasn’t deterred by his novice moves. Instead I saw a tall, dark, and handsome man willing to give it a try!  I was a hard catch though, and quickly pointed out that he was just a freshman and I was a first year graduate student.  Our romance quickly developed over creative dates like quilt making, art gallery hopping, and collecting gifts for a child we sponsored for Christmas.  Chas was not the average freshman and confidently pursued me.
Describe the proposal. I am a tricky girl to surprise, but Chas pulled off a sweet proposal at Dawson’s Creek in Pamlico County, NC.  I grew up spending summers with my grandparents on the water and Chas honed in on this magical spot.  He caught me off guard Easter weekend of 2010. I was told he would spend the holiday with friends in Greensboro.  After a day at the beach with family, I drove to my Grandmother’s house where I unexpectedly found Chas with a nervous smile on his face.  He dropped to one knee on the sandy bank of Dawson’s Creek in time for a sunset proposal, and I never saw it coming.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: unique, outside-the-box, comfortable
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The music.  Folk Psalm played fantastic bluegrass music for us, and even called a square dance!  We were also thrilled to have a cellist play during the ceremony, a long time favorite instrument of mine.  We were also in love with the “Big Fish”-esqe lighting draped across the field.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? Potluck!!  Not traditional for weddings these days, but standard fair for other celebrations.  We decided to give it a try, and it was THE best wedding food we, and most of our guests, had ever enjoyed.  The bluegrass band, hay bale seating, and use of our old barn and wraparound porch made for a particularly Southern wedding.   We had no wedding planner and no big budget.  We allowed our family and friends, many of which are talented artists, to provide personal touches.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress:  I had visited nearly every wedding shop between Winston and Raleigh without finding anything I liked. I considered ordering something online or having a custom designer fashion something, but time was running out. Six weeks before the wedding, my mother mentioned one last shop we had not yet visited. The tiny building housed hundreds of beautiful new dresses and Myeline, the owner and master seamstress, helped me find exactly what I wanted. For a very reasonable price, she altered the dress down 4 sizes and it was ready in plenty of time.
