Student Movement Update: John Lott at UT-Austin

BERJAYAOn Tuesday, September 28 at 6:00pm, a coalition of student organizations on the University of Texas Austin campus, including the Libertarian Longhorns, the UT Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, the UT Objectivism Society and the UT Federalist Society, will be hosting John Lott, famed defender of gun rights and author of the book “More Guns, Less Crime”.

Lott’s work in “More Guns, Less Crime” is commonly cited by many liberty-minded people when arguing against gun control laws, and Lott will be sharing some of his expertise in this field to the audience of students and members of the community of Austin.

Austin has been a hot-bed of debate over the potential of state laws being passed that would make it legal for a person to carry a concealed handgun on college campuses.

If you are in the Austin area on the 28th, stop by the UT Law School and hear John Lott discuss the negatives of gun control and the positives of a free society!

Current law in Texas makes college campuses a safe place for criminals. It is about time that law abiding students be able to protect themselves just like they can everywhere else they go.
Perry – You are an idiot – people like you are what care me, people like you are the ones shooting innocent people.

    • BERJAYA joel says:

If everyone had a gun on them at all times, seeing a guy with a gun would not raise alarm when that guy is intending to do harm to people. People wouldn't flee at the sight of the gun itself and would therefore be more vulnerable to being attacked. Yes, once an attack begins it would be possible for someone to fight back, but can you say that it wouldn't just erupt into chaos as 20 people start firing? How do you know which person with a gun is the attacker and which ones are trying to take him down. A situation such as that has a great potential for turning into a shootout between two people who both think they're going after the attacker. Many, many more people would be hurt in the crossfire than if everyone who isn't the attacker or law enforcement just got out of the situation.

The shooter today (along with many before him) were not criminals before they went on their shooting sprees. This has nothing to do with crime and everything to do with the potential for something that was an argument to turn into a gun battle or multiple people ending up shooting each other in the hope of stopping an attacker.

      • BERJAYA Student says:

Incorrect Joel – Individuals with a concealed handgun receive training for situations. The events you describe. I encourage you to get a concealed handgun license so that you can express your comments based on actual facts.

Your statement is also flawed by saying that people would being seeing guns everywhere – concealed handgun license means exactly that CONCEALED!

Once again an anti concealed carry comment based on ignorance.

    • BERJAYA mike says:

perry is a fucker he is a bitch too bet ya he is one of them

  2. BERJAYA casey jones says:

Yeah Perry, Stop shooting innocent people.

  3. BERJAYA Benjamin says:

Great point, Student. I'm sure that anyone who makes a comment like Perry is, in fact, shooting innocent people.

  4. BERJAYA Samantha says:

Hey "Student" haven't you ever heard of "violence begets violence."

  5. BERJAYA Ryan Laskowski says:

Did you hear? Perry has taken shelter in Calhoun hall.

  6. BERJAYA Student says:

Samantha – your ignorance is unwanted and only adds to the problem. Why should law abiding citizens be forced to be an easy target? The bad guys are going to have guns regardless of the laws. If you choose to not take responsibility for your own life then so be it but don't stand in the way of others that choose to be responsible.

    • BERJAYA Samantha says:

It's not ignorance to not want to be surrounded by people carrying guns and I'm sorry that you live in a state of constant fear that makes you feel like you have to be armed at all times. As for most of us…we don't and Joel makes a great point and by the way that constant state of fear you live in is called paranoia and you can get professional help for it.

  7. BERJAYA Paul lee says:

Why should law-abiding citizens carry guns ???? We have our great police force to protect us. How many of those gun-shooting incidents are based on self-defense (like those good old cowboy days) ???? Second to NONE. So, self-defense is just an excuse for those selling guns and bullets in this multi-billion dollar industry. By the way, if people are not doing bad things, why should they be afraid of people shooting at them ????

  8. BERJAYA William says:

    Great timing.

  9. BERJAYA Common Sense says:

Paul lee – you are an idiot. Having a concealed handgun license is like being CPR certified. You get them, train for it and hope to never need to use it. But, you should do both as a responsibility citizen.

the world is a crazy place, either be prepared or don't live.

  10. BERJAYA Benjamin says:

Thank you, Student, for sticking up for those of us who don't feel safe without weapons. I carry a nuclear bomb around, wherever I go, so that I know I'm always safe. And that fact that I can't take it to class with me is an injustice. I'm a law abiding citizen, and an "easy target" without it.

  11. BERJAYA Staff Member says:

I have a feeling this will be canceled tonight given that classes have been canceled today.

  12. BERJAYA anncoulter says:

if you cancel this event, the muslims have won, again.

  13. BERJAYA Irving Goldberg says:

It's bad enough allowing all them Asian students to drive (horribly) now you want them all to carry guns? They'd be shooting each other within seconds! ALLAHU AKBAR!

  14. BERJAYA James says:

You gun nuts are a strange bunch.

  15. BERJAYA SarahJohnson says:

And of course, some how some way Pres. Obama is going to get blamed for this. I pray for the safety of UT students

  16. BERJAYA RYANCASSE says:

    More Guns, More Crime*

  17. BERJAYA Pablo says:

John Lott must feel like an idiot right now.

  18. BERJAYA Sam says:

Training in a safe environment and being put in a real life threatening situation is completely different and that's when people panic or make mistakes and it's not because they are untrained, it's because they're scared. And to say people who are trained to carry hand guns will react properly in these type of situations is ignorant, because you really don't know how you're going to react until you're in that situation.

  19. BERJAYA Goblin73 says:

When every law abiding citizen has the righ to carry a gun, the criminals will think long and hard before they go on a shooting spree. Most of them do not want to die, therefore, they may refrain from their shooting sprees, thus, guns can save lives. Guns do not kill anymore than pencils misspell words.

    • BERJAYA tex says:

don't most of the shooters end up killing themselves? today's did.

    • BERJAYA HUGHESJONES says:

Another way to prevent them from going to shooting sprees…don't give them guns!

      • BERJAYA Howdy says:

We'll have to see what kind of person this is. If he was a felon, or had mental illness he may not have been allowed to own a gun. Otherwise this is a freak occurrence.

If he was hell bent on killing and didn't have a gun he could have driven his car through the crowd. Lets ban cars too. They kill more people than guns. Ban alcohol and cigarettes while your at it.

  20. BERJAYA Clark Ruper says:

First off, it is a horrible tragedy when something like this happens. It is extremely fortuante that no others were harmed.

While the timing of tonight's event is unfortunate, it is now more than ever critically important to have an open conversation about the merits of gun control laws. John Lott provides a rigorous and data-supported argument for why more open gun carry laws would reduce the incidence of violent crime and decrease the chance of further such tragedies happening. The campus community should have the chance to discuss these ideas.

As such, it is appropriate for the event to continue as planned.

  21. BERJAYA Jake Rudinsky says:

It would seem, Goblin, that the shooter in this instance did want to die. I would go so far as to say that most of the people who go on shooting sprees do so with the understanding that they will likely be killed by police.

I can only imagine how chaotic this situation would have been if there were a dozen concerned, responsible citizens who had their responsibly owned, concealed, licensed weapons in hand while the SWAT team was searching for a second suspect.

    • BERJAYA steve says:

Good point. In the heat of the moment, a cop may be more likely to shoot first and ask questions later. Then you have a double tragedy. I don't think this means it's a bad idea for citizens to carry guns, however. In the Trolley Square shooting in Salt Lake a few years ago an armed citizen took out the bad guy. Who knows how many lives he saved.

  23. BERJAYA Gary says:

To everyone against students carrying concealed handguns:

Do you feel safe in a grocery store? What about at the movies? The fact is you are already around handguns every day and don’t even realize it. If the law were changed you wouldn’t notice a difference visually. Sure you would know there is a chance the person next to you has a gun but this is no different than almost any other time you leave your house.

  24. BERJAYA Michael says:

I have a conceal carry permit. I received all the training.__Nothing in the training even remotely prepares you to confront another armed person, much less shoot them and kill them.__OK, lets say you are carrying a light, easy to conceal weapon, like a .38 revolver, with say a 1 3/4 inch barrel. Perfect carry conceal. It is a horrible gun to accurately shoot at anything over 30 feet. An up close and personal gun.__You see the guy in the black mask with the AK-47 walking towards the Library.__Let me get this straight: You draw your weapon and announce? Or just start shooting. Do you get within 5 feet before you start shooting?__The chances that they bad guy kills you with his fully automatic long gun are really really bad.__

  25. BERJAYA Doc Holliday says:

I feel safe in grocery stores, theaters, banks, bars, on the road and have been of the same mindset for over seventy one years. I happen to have lived in a non-carry state this entire period.
I feel unsafe when every other person out there seems to think they are able to handle a handgun. That is a common fallacy. I can think of no other place I would rather not be, than where there are a bunch of Wyatt Earp wannabes around.
Some of you folks need to get a grip.

  26. BERJAYA bskb says:

The rules currently say no. But apparently they didn't stop it from happening. Too bad nobody else was able to stop him. Remember "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away."

  28. BERJAYA Reno Jones says:

There's no way for any of you to win this argument. This is one of those issues that's intrenched in our souls. It doesn't matter what data you provide. It doesn't matter how many crying parents you bring up. This nation has guns. Too many. The fact of the matter is, if some jack ass wants to bring a gun to class, they will. Permit or no. It may be in their car, their bag, or up their ass. Give it a rest kids. Suck it up and realize that it's a crazy world, invest in kevlar, and duck

  29. BERJAYA Ranger Rick says:

"Guns" don't kill people! Commie guns like AK47s kill people.

  30. When will the new guns for 2011 come out? I thought most man’s were doing them around this time?
