BLDGBLOG: Mexico City

Mexico City

I'd recently been thinking that it might be fun to see this year's Mutek festival in Mexico City – till I read this: "Examples of poor people's powerlessness in the face of the [global sanitation crisis] are legion. Mexico City residents, for example, inhale shit: fecal dust blowing off Lake Texcoco during the hot, dry season causes typhoid and hepatitis." (Mike Davis, Planet of Slums)

So if you do go – keep your drink covered.

And it rained blood over Kerala, India. Is it less yucky to breathe Methyl bromide in Sonoma Valley? And, what's the "green" or "brown" architectural stance on funeral pyres?

Frankly, if you're basing your travel plans on Mike Davis, you're going to miss out on much of the developing world. If anything, you might want to check with people who have been to Mutek in the past to find out if this year's has a good lineup.

Well... I'm not entirely serious that Mike Davis - or airborne shit, for that matter - has altered my travel plans. But the above thought process did actually occur. In fact Ecology of Fear makes me want to move to Los Angeles.

In any case, I think the Mutek/Mex. City line-up sounds a bit tame this year; but maybe that's just me. You going?
