Look Who’s On GoodGuide: Anna Getty, Author and Green Living and Holistic Lifestyle Expert

Many people are doing wonderful work to elevate our consciousness and help us lead lives more closely attuned with our social andenvironmental values. Anna Getty does it on so many fronts and in ways that celebrate the journey. She refers to it as PureStyle Living, which at its core is about living in balance and making a difference. As she writes:

“PureStyle living is all about the balance. Combining style and sustainability is getting easier every day. We can shop organic, buy fair-trade products and still look gorgeous in the process. PureStyle is about making conscious choices to maintain a lovely quality of life for you and your family while making a positive impact (no matter how great or small) in your neighborhood and the global community.”

She is the author of I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas and the cookbook Anna Getty’s Easy, Green Organic. She’s the co-founder of Pregnancy Awarenss Month. Anna also sits on the board of Healthy Child, Healthy World and the Environmental Media Awards and works closely with the Organic Center.

We had a chance to hear from Anna about her work, her views on green living, and her hopes for the future.

All the Love in the World

There are a lot of ways to say “I love you” (or “I really, really care about you” as the case may be), and there’s no doubt that some creative Romeos and Juliets will wow their significant other this Valentine’s Day with especially touching and sentimental gifts.

However, those of us who don’t have the time to coordinate an elaborate scavenger hunt that culminates in a meal of heart-shaped finger foods will probably stick to a Valentine’s Day basic: chocolate. This year, with the help of GoodGuide’s Chocolate Buying Guide, you can say you put a little more thought into your selection by gifting a consciously made confection.

New Scents in the Cleaning Closet

Lemony-fresh. Pine-scented. Clean cotton. These smells we associate with cleaning products are rapidly becoming part of the old guard and making way for a cleaning aisle that smells more like the beauty aisle. Now, cleaning products tout scents like “basil” and “geranium.” Unfortunately, the presence of these trendier fragrances doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll be more privy to the fragrance ingredients in a product.

Addicted to Girl Scout Cookies?

Early spring means one thing to Girl Scouts – it’s cookie season. Millions of boxes of Girl Scout cookies are ordered and consumed by Americans whose mouths and stomachs can’t resist the nostalgic sweetness of Samoas and Thin Mints (or the innocent sales pitch of a budding entrepreneur). Unfortunately, the recession has hit the Girl Scout cookie business hard, forcing the organization to start limiting production to six types of cookies in some parts of the country. The Wall Street Journal reports that the menu scale-back is the “Scouts’ latest way to increase profit.”

Is It Pet Food?

I loved Darya Pino’s flowchart, “Is It Food,” posted earlier this month over at Huffington Post. Ever since, I’ve had flowcharts on the brain. Combine that with researching pet foods, and it’s only fitting that I’d end up making a chart to help folks figure out what to feed their feline and/or canine companions. In going through the chart, you’ll probably have the same revelation I did: Pet food is VERY different from human food. Not just in the “duh” way, but in some other pretty fundamental ways.

I now know a lot more about the pet food industry than you’d ever expect from a dietitian. This flowchart captures what I believe to be the most important factors to consider when buying pet food. If arrows make you dizzy, I recommend going directly to the pet food ratings on GoodGuide. Enjoy!
