Tom Donilon Would Be A 'Disaster' As National Security Adviser, Robert Gates Reportedly Said

Outgoing National Security Adviser Jim Jones once disparaged his replacement and current deputy, Thomas Donilon, for his lack of overseas experience, telling him that as a result: "You have no credibility with the military," according to Bob Woodward's "Obama's Wars."

In addition, Donilon, who previously worked as a vice president for floundering mortgage giant Fannie Mae and was known for his strong views and opinions, once offending Defense Secretary Robert Gates so much during a meeting that the Pentagon chief almost walked out, according to Woodward.

Gates asserted that Donilon would be a "disaster" as National Security Adviser, the book alleges.

Jones called Donilon into his office late last year to discuss Jones's plans to step down from the post, writes Woodward. After praising his deputy for his "substantive and organizational skills" which made him indispensable to the president, he also reprimanded Donilon for three major mistakes:

First, he had never gone to Afghanistan or Iraq, or really left the office for a serious field trip. As a result, he said, you have no direct understanding of these places. "You have no credibility with the military." You should go overseas. The White House, Situation Room, interagency byplay, as important as they are, are not everything.

Second, Jones continued, you frequently pop off with absolute declarations about places you've never been, leaders you've never met, or colleagues you work with. Gates had mentioned this to Jones, saying that Donilon's sound-offs and strong spur-of-the-moment opinions, especially about one general, had offended him so much at an Oval Office meeting that he nearly walked out.

Third, Jones said that Donilon was not good in his dealings with his staff at the National Security Council, displaying "too little feel for the people who work day and night...."

A senior defense official told The Huffington Post that Gates and Donilon have enjoyed a good working relationship for many, many months, emphasizing that the characterization in the Woodward book is extremely outdated and mainly concerned the 2009 review of the administration's policy on Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In addition, the official said that Gates looks forward to working with Donilon, adding that the promotion will not speed the departure of Gates, who has indicated his intention to resign soon.

At a press conference this morning, Gates praised Donilon:

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Gen. Jones and I have, and have had, a very productive and very good working relationship with Tom Donilon, contrary to what you may have read and I look forward to working with him.

Donilon did finally visit Afghanistan last March during President Obama's six-hour late-night visit to the country.

As far as a strictly historical point of view the Nazi machine was awesome for it'st military strength. For a small country to almost conquer all or Europe is incredible. But I still wonder if he thinks they were great (why else would he dress up like one of them) for other reasons. With politicians you never know. Most will say anything to get elected. You can’t get inside this guy’s head to know his true motivation.

Donilon is a lawyer whose clients included Goldman Sachs.

No military experience.

His wife is Chief of Staff for Jill Biden.

He has no foreign experience, no military experience, no pertinent experience except being a political apparatchik.

Obama just keeps surrounding himself with know-nothings - creating an East Coast Elitist bubble around himself.

I would like to know just who is the "Rug Cleaner" for this Administration.

When one NY Council on Foreign Relations member is swept under the rug, another one takes his place.

Someone should check to see if Rand Corporation used their tunneling machine to drive a underground tunnel between The Pratt Bldg at 58 East 68th Street NY through to all of those Administration Department buildings in Washington.

Because it would make it so much easier for those 340 members from that elite Council on Foreign Relations (David Rockefeller, Chairman Emeritus) to get shuffled back and forth between Washington and NY.

Rahm Emanuel, CFR member bing replaced by Rouse whose deputy CoS is from CFR
James Jones, CFR member being replaced by Thomas Donilon, CFR member.
Roberts Gates, CFR member being replaced by a CFR member in 2011.
Mike Mullen, CFR member being replaced by a CFR member in 2011.

Of 44 Czar's appointed, most hold CFR membership.

And it don't matter if the Republicans or Democrats are in power for their Administrations are OUT SOURCED to the Council on Foreign Relations.

Here is one very despised V/P talking to his real boss at CFR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbnpN07J_zg&feature;=related . Note his GLOATING over withholding his CFR membership from the government vetting process.

And why doesn't the Corporate Media report on this "shadow government" being run out of NY? Because they also hold membership in the CFR 4000 membership base!

For most readers on this site, the CFR is an unknown entity. The American people have been well-trained by the MSM to just absorb sound bites and not delve into issues. The CFR is a key element of the Military industrial Complex and, although it sounds very paranoid to refer to such groups as the "shadow government" or shadow elite, that is exactly what they are. The American people are getting deeper and deeper into the abyss of Corporate and Military control and most are totally unaware.

It is a very good sign that Robert Gates does not like Tom Donilon.

People, we are only in Afghanistan and Iraq for crooked reasons and we are not going to leave unless we stand up to the same Military Industrial Complex that Eisenhower warned us about. Their crimes must end. I don't think it's a coincidence that not long after Eisenhower's warning, we lost a president. Do people know when asked where he was on that day, November 22, 1963, GHWB said he could not remember, but there are records that show that he flew into Dallas that day and there is a picture of him at the scene. Nixon was there too for the CIA front company, Pepsi convention. Did people know that the Hinckley family who shot Reagan, was close personal friends of GHWB? Did people know that Marvin Bush was in charge of security at the WTC? Did you know that friends of the Bush family owned the flight school where the terrorists learned how to fly? Dopeopleknow that Jeb declared a state of emergency in Florida a day or two before 911 and the day after he came to the flight school and took all their records? Didyouknow that the same people behind the CIA drug smuggling from the eighties are the same people in charge of Afghanistan, that the Taliban was rocking the world's drug markets by eradicating drugs, but since we've been there, the're growing more drugs than ever before in history?

How stupid you are. either that or you are some paid pot-stirrer.

If "October Surprise" Gates hates him, he must be the right guy. It also means the guy is outside the box, where better, freer thinking occurs.

Perhaps it is Jim Jones, the outgoing National Security Advisor, or Defense Secretary Robert Gates that are missing key experiences. When was the last time Jim or Bob talked to a waitress that stood on her feet 8 hours a day or an assembly line working grinding his mind into mush putting part A into part B all day?

When was the last time Jim or Bob drove around the slums of American cities or visited an over crowded classroom? A children’s’ ward of a cancer hospital? Or talked to those standing in an unemployment office or emergency room?

Perhaps Jim or Bob’s obsession with our far flung empire’s worries need to focus it in a little bit closer to home!!

America’s true threats aren’t outside our borders. They’re right here on main street.

Not to worry. Unlike our previous "president," President Obama thinks for himself.

How is a career U.S. political advisor, government official and lawyer going to be effective in this role.

Insanity! Is he trying to get the military to revolt?

If the Bush's Gates think he will be a disaster, than I know he is going to be just what we need.....Let the military know who is in charge.....THEY ARE NOT.
Sans Octavian   15 hours ago (9:59 AM)
It's not about them being in charge. It is about being an effective advisor to the President. Hippie.

Sweet jumping jehosephat; six whole HOURS in Afghanistan? Mr. Donilan, put on your flak jacket, your kevlar and hump your backside out to the boonies where so many of the people you're talking about and talking to live and breathe. Go out there and get a feel, a vision, a smell, a sound of what's going on and I don't mean some little "go see" where you're escorted by 2 and 3 stars and have a contingent around you that keeps you from having any real idea of what's going on. Put yourself in the shoes/boots of those you're supposed to be advising about and see what the country is like and what is happening. This is not Fannie Mae any more, Mr. Donilan. It's time to shrug out of your golden parachute and get to where our troops are trying to make something happen despite the inefficiency/corruption of the Afghan govenrment. It's time you saw what real people are doing, and not just the "suits."

I like Robert Gates, he's a smart man. Obama should head his advice.

#2 @ CIA during Iran Contra, known as "The fixer."
tiredofpc   24 hours ago (1:43 AM)
That may have been true, but it's also true that he's been the "fixer" for the American Military after that disaster, Rumsfeld. He's by far the smartest appointment that Mr. Obama has made. I hope he stays longer.

You should try doing a little reading about him, regardless of your stance on war (or mine) he is just doing a job and he does it well. He is passionate about taking care of our troops and seeing to their welfare, it is a priority for him.

Is Bob Woodward like, a trillion now?? The political capital his name brings is handy, but is this revolutionary critique? Meh.

Yalie, military intelligence officer assigned to Nixon's Whitehouse to report back to the joint chiefs. Hired by Washington Post with no experience. The rest is history.

I am with Gates on this one 100%.
