Best things about "Solar Lottery" cover:
  • In space, dodgeball Really sucks
  • In space, they like to get high on nitrous and throw shit at stray Star Trek characters.
  • First prize was the Earth itself! Second prize: a set of steak knives. Third prize: you're fired.
  • Philip K. Dick. Paperback original. Word.

AceD103
Best things about "The Big Jump" cover:
  • God likes to apply his eyeliner with rocket ships.
  • Hate this cover, but Leigh Brackett is one of the greatest pulp/scifi authors that time forgot.

"I'll stop him," Wakeman repeated. "Some way, somehow."

"Between drinks, maybe." Rita halted for a moment to tie the laces on her boots, and then she disappeared down a descent ramp toward Cartwright's private quarters. She didn't look back.

Whoa, Rita. Nice burn.

Paperback 238: She Woke to Darkness / Brett Halliday (Dell 867)

Paperback 238: Dell 867 (1st ptg, 1955)

Title: She Woke to Darkness
Author: Brett Halliday
Cover artist: Robert Schulz

Yours for: $9

BERJAYA
Best things about this cover:

  • "She Woke to a Massive Head Wound"
  • Doesn't everyone wake to darkness from time to time? I mean, when you gotta go ...
  • Her left hip has grown its own hand. Creepy.
  • That's one big, rectangular pool of blood.
BERJAYA
Best things about this back cover:

  • Love the caricatures of the characters. Second one looks more like an 80's fashion model than a 50's dame who likes capital-M Martinis.
  • Here's where Mike Shayne and I differ: I prefer vintage broads and vivacious brandy.
  • "Who Is This Girl?" - early, eventually discarded title of Madonna's hit "Who's That Girl?"

Page 123~

The duplicating office had been able to shed no light on Halliday's disappearance. He had left with the original manuscript under his arm about six o-clock, and that was all they knew.

That's right. Writer "Brett Halliday" is a character in a novel by ... writer Brett Halliday.

Paperback 81: Arizona Ames / Zane Grey (Pocket Books 80451)

Paperback 81: Pocket Books 80451 (6th ptg, 1973)

Title: Arizona Ames
Author: Zane Grey
Cover artist: Robert Schulz

PRICE: $8

BERJAYA

Best things about this cover / back cover:

  • His hand!
  • His gun has its own gun.
  • I would never have touched this book if it weren't a. a wraparound cover that was b. painted by the magnificent Robert Schulz. This is far more photo-realistic than his earlier work (most of the stuff I have by him dates from the 50s). He captures movement better than almost any other paperback artist (Mitchell Hooks can, at times, give him a run for his money).
  • I like that this scene actually seems to depict the definitive moment in Arizona Ames's life: "... the time he'd shot three gunslingers while lying wounded on a saloon floor."
  • I want to know his "secret hurt." Really, I do. I'm sorely tempted to read this book.

PS you may have noticed the "Donation" button in the sidebar. While I definitely encourage the giving of money to me (lord knows how hard I work), I think an even better way to support this site is to Buy My Books. That's right, though I'm not going to force the issue very hard (my books are like ... children to me; not necessarily my children, but children nonetheless), I would like to announce that every book on this site can be had. I will list a thoroughly researched and non-negotiable price (that includes shipping). If you want any book you see here, email me first and let me know (rexparker@mac.com).

I sold my first book to a T.V. writer a couple days ago; when she wrote and asked if she could buy it, I suddenly realized that once I've blogged about these books, there's no reason they shouldn't go to a new home.

That is all.

Paperback 73: H.M.S. Ulysses / Alistair MacLean (Perma Books M-4067)

Paperback 73: Perma Books M-4067 (1st ptg, 1956)

Title: H.M.S. Ulysses
Author: Alistair MacLean
Cover artist: Robert Schulz

BERJAYA
Best things about this cover:

  • Ulysses decides he is tired of taking shit from the Harpies
  • Awesomely unattributed blurb! - "Certainly the best novel of World War II at sea ... said this guy I heard mumbling to himself in the bookstore once."
  • Robert Schulz is a great, great cover artist - one of the five best that ever lived, IMOO. His stuff is always very dramatic and naturalistic. We'll see a lot more from him.

Paperback 34: Signet 1724

Paperback 34: Signet 1724 (PBO, 1957)

Title: Triple Slay
Author: Adam Knight
Cover artist: [Robert Schulz]

BERJAYABest things about this cover:

  • Yesterday, I said I'd buy pretty much any vintage paperback that featured a girl with a gun on its cover. I'd like to expand that claim to include girls with knives or other assorted weaponry.
  • She's really holding that knife in the jabby / kill position. Not fooling around...
  • Why do I find her completely unsexy?
  • Unless this novel involves baseball, that title is terrible.

BERJAYA
Best things about this back cover:

  • God, the copywriter really goes on a cliché bender in that second paragraph. I also love how much mileage (and perhaps joy) said copywriter is getting out of the "[pregnant pause] MURDER!" line...
  1. "The beautiful brunette has a face and figure that could send a man ... to murder." (front cover)
  2. "LIGHTS ... CAMERA ... MURDER!!!"
  3. "... he discovers that a killer is setting the stage - for murder."
  • "Mari Barstow" ... "Steve Conacher" ... these names are almost as bad as "Barr Breed." Clearly I need to start a running list of the Most Ridiculous Character Names in my collection. I'll get on that soon.
  • What's a "TV singer?"
