This one was graciously shared with me recently. I'd heard some people say this was Pilot's best. While I don't agree it's their best, it's pretty good. Just a little too many slow songs for my personal taste. This is mostly a re-recording in 2002 of their previous album "Two's A Crowd" with a couple extra tracks thrown in.(I'll post "Two's A Crowd" later)

This album was supposed to be a comeback vehicle for Sonny Geraci, onetime member of the 60's Cleveland group The Outsiders and also of the early 70's group Climax which had a hit with the song "Precious and Few". Geraci, assuming the name Peter Emmett, is accompanied in the studio by the original line-up of The Cruisers (minus Donnie Iris) to play on this album.

This album was supposed to be a comeback vehicle for Sonny Geraci, onetime member of the 60's Cleveland group The Outsiders and also of the early 70's group Climax which had a hit with the song "Precious and Few". Geraci, assuming the name Peter Emmett, is accompanied in the studio by the original line-up of The Cruisers (minus Donnie Iris) to play on this album.

Although the back album cover includes pictures of a band called North Coast, these other musicians (from left to right coinciding with their pictures: Chris Kafka, Terry Manfredi, Dave Garlic, Billy Smith) were not involved with the recording of the album. Until recently, it was not known whether North Coast actually existed or was simply a fictional group put together for use on the album's cover as part of the "story". However, it has now been confirmed from the band's drummer Billy Smith that North Coast did indeed exist and was brought on board after the album was recorded. The band debuted the album live at the Cleveland Agora Theater opening for the "Generators". The album didn't get much airplay, and while North Coast stayed together playing in or around the Cleveland/Akron area for 2 years, they eventually disbanded and all went their separate ways.

Interestingly, the Mark Avsec penned tune "She Don't Know Me" was later re-recorded by none other than BON JOVI for their debut album.

Wadsworth Mansion "Sweet Mary"

A one-hit wonder with the forgotten gem, "Sweet Mary". A lot of times I'll say it's a shame a band didn't have more than one hit because they were good...but sometimes... Anyway, I tracked down a vinyl rip of this LP, which seems to be very rare. The musicianship is VERY loose, much like a Grateful Dead LP in attitude. Even the hit was recorded in a very sloppy manner, and obviously the 45 released as a single (featured in this post) was a re-recording and NOT the album version. The single was very tight and crisp in performance, unlike the album version, and the entire album in general. So if you'd like the single version of this forgotten pop gem, you know what to do!

The Seaside Stars

Got an e-mail from a band called Seaside Stars. A band from Berlin who will be coming to the U.S. to tour in September and wanted to know if I could post some info and samples about them on the blog. Gave a listen to the music and it definitely fits the format here on Power Population. Nice mostly upbeat power pop music with modern production but 60's songwriting sensibilities. A hint of Beach Boys from time to time in the vocals. Nice smooth vocals even on the upbeat energetic songs, nice melodies and nice guitar as well. Give them a listen, and if you like them check them out on Notlame.com. They have a couple of CD's for sale on there as well.
