Still one of my favorite crime novels, though I was late to the party (first read it five years ago). I have to get a new copy because mine's falling apart from repeated readings.
I was REALLY late to the party; I got GUN MONKEYS as a Christmas gift from my daughter. (How cool is that?) Great book, great read, Mickey Spillane with a sense of humor.
I first read it in 2004 when I was in the middle east. The mystery section of our makeshift library at Camp As Sayliyah, Qatar was filled with legal thrillers, forensic whodunnits, and military techno-thrillers; nothing that really grabbed me. Then I saw that in-your-face cover and the over-the-top title and just knew I had to read that book. As an added bonus, it fit neatly into the side pocket of my desert camouflage uniform, so I could keep it with me to read during those unexpected down times.
In my opinion, Gun Monkeys has one of the best, if not THE BEST, opening paragraph or two of any novel every published. Which, given that I haven't actually READ EVERY NOVEL EVERY PUBLISHED, falls under the category of HYPERBOLE, but hey, still...
Victor Gischler is the author of 4 hard-boiled crime novels. His debut novel GUN MONKEYS was nominated for the Edgar Award, and his novel SHOTGUN OPERA was an Anthony Award finalist. His work has been translated into Italian, French, Spanish, German, Czech and Japanese. He earned a Ph.D. in English at the University of Southern Mississippi where they beat him with rolled up newspapers and fed him raw liver.
His Fifth novel GO-GO GIRLS OF THE APOCALYPSE was released by the Touchstone/Fireside imprint of Simon & Schuster and followed by VAMPIRE A GO-GO. His new crime novel THE DEPUTY is coming soon from Tyrus Books.

I have been trying so hard to find this damn book!
Ca Nadeau,
Go to your favorite bookseller and demand they order it!

BTW, that last comment was from me. Like a dumbass, I forgot to sign it.

I don't suppose you have a picture of the book sticking out the top pocket of your camouflage uniform, do you? Tat would go on the blog for sure.
Kudos on Babe Week by the way.

Victor,
I don't believe I do have one like that. If I have a picture with GM in it, it would probably be one of my room.
Glad you like the babes. Two more days to go in the week of babes.
I went to my local bookseller but the guy was all big and mean and scary and I pussed out :(
