March to the Beat of Your Own Drum as Parade Digital’s New Managing Editor

BERJAYA

BERJAYAIf you’re one of millions of people who surf Parade.com, listen up. The site is looking for a new managing editor to develop original, timely and compelling content for Parade Digital and its syndicated digital properties.

You should be a team player, and be able to multi-task well under tight deadlines. Interested? Apply here.

Free is the New Green

BERJAYAYou’ve probably used products that work the freemium model. Flickr has Flickr Pro, Pandora has Pandora One, and Google has tons of stuff you’ve got to pay for. And it’s all floating on a big foundation of free.

Now media companies, having let all the content out of barn, are eager to get some of it back in and put a price tag on it. Join us to find out how they’re doing it at our upcoming Freemium Summit, October 25 in NYC. Speakers include Anne Driscoll (Ning), Ryan Holmes (Hootsuite), Rashmi Sinha (Slideshare), and Brent Chudoba (SurveyMonkey).

Reporting via Twitter from a Connecticut Capital Murder Trial

BERJAYANews organizations including WTNH, the Hartford Courant, FOX CT, and the New Haven Register turned to Twitter to cover the trial of Steven J. Hayes, who was convicted of capital murder for his role in the brutal killings of the wife and daughters of Dr. William A. Petit Jr. of Cheshire, Conn., as TV cameras were barred from the courtroom, The New York Times reported.

Among reporters using Twitter to cover the trial: WTNH assignment editor Rachel Guerra (@rachelguerra), Hartford Courant columnist Helen Ubiñas (@NotesFromHeL), Courant reporter Alaine Griffin (@alainegriffin), FOX CT reporter George Colli (@GeorgeColli), and FOX CT television reporter Laurie Perez (@LauriePerez), according to the Times.

Hartford Courant senior editor Andrew Julien told the Times, “It has given us an insight into a new way to reach our readers,” while Guerra added, “It was just a matter of how fast I could type.”

However, Paul Bass, editor of online newspaper New Haven Independent, wasn’t as enthusiastic, telling the Times, “Every fact in a gruesome trial as it unfolds is not that important or relevant. It’s just gossip.”

Who Will Rescue the Chilean Miners from Super Junior?

BERJAYAThe rescued Chilean miners may have prompted huge usage upticks for media outlets like CNN.com, msnbc.com, and Univision Interactive Media, but the thrilling tale was only good for second place on the Top 10 Most Tweeted Brands list, created by AdAge.com and social-media trend-analytics service What the Trend, as the miners were topped by South Korean boy band Super Junior.

How does the Top 10 Most Tweeted Brands list work? From the Notes section at the bottom of the AdAge.com post:

We broadly define “brands” to include major marketers (e.g., Apple) and branded products (e.g., iPad), as well as celebrity and entertainment brands (e.g., Lady Gaga, American Idol). Ad Age works with WTT to consolidate multiple threads of brand chatter (e.g., Apple, iPad, iTampon, Apple Tablet) into one position on the chart when it’s clear that related Twitter conversations are basically all about the same topic, even if they use different keywords.

The rest of the list, following Super Junior and the Chilean minors: Nobel Prize, Twitter, David Arquette-Courtney Cox, NFL, BET Hip Hop Awards, MLB, X-Factor, and The Simpsons.

msnbc.com: Coverage of Chilean Miners No. 2 in Video Streams Behind Obama Inauguration

BERJAYAmsnbc.com unearthed its results from the rescue of the formerly trapped miners from the northern Atacama desert in Chile, saying that it served more than 10 million related video streams Tuesday and Wednesday.

The MSNBC Digital Network site added that it served more than 6 million live video streams during the actual rescue effort, from 3 p.m. Tuesday-midnight Wednesday, topping the 5.5 million reported by CNN.com.

msnbc.com said the Chilean miner story marked its second-most live video streams of all-time, behind only the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

NHL Touts Digital Growth During Opening Weekend

NHLLogo.jpgThe National Hockey League dropped the puck on its 2010-11 season with reports of strong growth in its digital distribution platforms.

The league said NHL.com totaled its second-most regular-season video starts ever this past Sunday, adding that unique visitors to the site were up 19 percent compared with last year’s opening weekend, and opening day saw a 13 percent gain versus the 2009-10 opener. Video starts were up 131 percent on opening day and 209 percent on opening weekend compared with last season.

The NHL’s online success is taking place globally, as its top 10 countries in terms of gains in unique visitors versus the 2009-10 season were: Finland (up 68 percent), the Russian Federation (58 percent), Slovakia (Slovak Republic) (53 percent), Germany (42 percent), the Czech Republic (37 percent), United Kingdom (35 percent), Switzerland (33 percent), Sweden (27 percent), Canada (15 percent), and the United States (12 percent).

NHL GameCenter LIVE, which allows fans to watch live games online, posted a 30 percent increase in subscriptions when compared with the same period last season, and the first day of the season brought with it the highest single-day subscription total ever.

And the league reported hundreds of thousands of downloads of its mobile applications for the Google/Android, BlackBerry, Nokia, and iPhone platforms.

Demand Media Blog Distribution Network Open for Business

DemandMediaLogo.jpgDemand Media used 2010 BlogWorld & New Media Expo as a forum to announce the creation of its Demand Media Blog Distribution Network, which will enable selected bloggers who will be chosen through an application process to syndicate their posts to Demand Media sites and partner sites in its content channels.

Bloggers who are chosen after submitting applications will take part in a revenue-sharing program based on page views, and their bylines will be included with their posts to help improve their search-engine rankings.

Online tool Blogger Workdesk will also allow bloggers to track where their posts appear, page views, how much traffic was driven back to their blog, and how much money they’ve earned.

Demand Media on the application process:

The Demand Media Studios editorial team thoroughly reviews and examines the content on each applicant’s Web site for frequency of posts, family-friendly language, and a distinctive, intelligent writing style. Qualifying bloggers will then be matched with appropriate Web sites using a combination of editorial selection and contextual matching that maps the engaging first-person perspectives of the blogger with other relevant how-to or informational content on each page.

New Editors’ Choice iPad App from The New York Times Offers More Free Content, but for How Long?

NewYorkTimesiPad.jpg The mystery of the absence from the iTunes Store of the iPad app from The New York Times has been solved, and it represents good news for users of the Apple tablet — at least until the newspaper’s pay wall takes effect in early 2011.

The Times is updating its free Editors’ Choice iPad app to include breaking news, video, multimedia, and much more content than the previous version, paidContent reported, giving users with NYTimes.com accounts or those who complete the free in-app registration process access to more than 25 sections and some 50 blogs. The app is slated to be available in the iTunes Store Friday, and the iPhone app will undergo a similar transformation, according to paidContent.

The revamped Editors’ Choice will also include improved navigation, full-screen photos, and sharing via Facebook, Twitter, and other social-media sites.

However, how much of this will change when the pay wall is erected in early 2011? New York Times Media Group senior vice president of marketing and circulation and general manager of reader applications Yasmin Namini told paidContent:

When we go to the pay model, there will always be something you can access without having a paid subscription. Whether it will be the free four sections you get without registering or something different, that’s to be determined later. But to access everything in full, a paid subscription will be required.
