Original Caption:

"Two CORE demonstrators are dragged away from the Federal Building on March 9, 1965. About 20 sit-ins were dragged from the lobby by the hands and feet as they sang, "We shall not be moved." Ejected by deputy United States marshals, some of the demonstrators smeared doors and windows with sandwiches. The marshals also cleared the sixth floor of the building."

Washington -- Alice Paul makes a toast to Tennessee's ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote. The banner beside her was displayed outside the National Women's Suffrage Party's Washington, DC, headquarters showing the stars of the states which had ratified the amendment. Since the 18th amendment, Prohibition, had previously been passed, the toast was with grape juice (1920)

David Zwerdling, the American Labor Party candidate for Assembly in the 4th A.D., Manhattan, is holding a banner bearing the legend: "We Want No Ghettoes in New York." Another sign declares, "We Demand Equal Rights for Negro Tenants." San Francisco -- Police drag demonstrator to the paddy wagon, after breaking up demonstrations staged by more than 500 persons outside the Fairmont Hotel, in protest against Secretary of State Dean Rusk who was to speak inside. The demonstrators became unruly, and started throwing containers of a blood-like fluid, then bottles, resulting in the need for some 100 police officers who moved in and dispersed the crowd. (1968)
