What's HOT

Delaware Senate candidates Chris Coons and Christine O'Donnell (Picapp)

Christine O'Donnell quickly made a name for herself in this year's election as a mini-Palin, due to a similar hairstyle and some nonsensical remarks, but last night, she fought hard in her own way during the Delaware Senate debate. Shown on CNN and CNN.com, O'Donnell, a marketing consultant and the Republican candidate to fill Vice President Biden's open seat, went up against Chris Coons, Democratic nominee, an attorney and county council officer.  Read more

Medicinal Marijuana

The tough part comes when you, the managers in the middle, have to figure out how to address your child’s need for limits and guidance, and your parent’s need for limits and support. With this dichotomy in mind, the New York Times article about how medicinal marijuana is bridging generational gaps, speaks to the challenges and contradictions facing the "sandwich" generation. The article highlights adults who find common ground with their aging parents when their parents go against conventional wisdom and use marijuana to ease their pain and discomfort.  Read more

The Rocky Horror Glee Show

While others debate whether or not Glee should cover a classic such as Rocky Horror (for all of the excitement on Twitter, there were still a few living in fear. For some, they don't want to see a remake of something that worked so well in all of its horrible glory the first time around. For others, they don't want to see the wholesome-ish Glee kids singing about being sweet transvestites), I am here to tell you that this is the episode that will finally make me turn on Glee.  Read more

Working Dog (flickr)

Years ago, I worked at a small town newspaper where "Office Dog" was a regular position on the masthead. (Including a dog named Do who was verbally hard to chastise: "Do! Don't!") Workplace pets are surely on the rise but working like a dog (or rather, alongside one) isn't for everyone. Nevertheless, 75 million Americans believe pets in the workplace make people happier.  Read more

Farmer in a Field

"We are needy," Mom said, and she walked into the kitchen and started taking everything out of that pretty basket and putting the stuff into the cupboards or the refrigerator, as if she just got home from grocery shopping. Mom looked the same way Dad did in the soybean field, except she had that look on her face like she was deciphering a puzzle, with all her thoughts deep inside her brain where she couldn't hear anyone else's voice, instead of like she was searching for something far away, like Dad did when he was in that field.  Read more

Why I Try Not to Over-Edit My Blog Posts

blog

At the risk of sounding like Popeye the Sailor Man, I am what I am. What I am is a blogger who isn't perfect, among other things (all of which could still be followed by "who isn't perfect" - just to be clear). When I write my posts for my blog I break a lot of grammar rules. No, really. A lot.  Read more

Pumpkin-Shaped Sugar Cookies

Halloween was always my favorite holiday as a kid.  Since my birthday is 12/22, I always sort of had some competition with Christmas.  And besides, no other holiday lets you dress up in wacky costumes-- or eat as much junk food!  Read more

Wabi Sabi

The term wabi sabi has caught my attention lately. I'm not sure why. I must have seen a book someplace, or maybe noticed the shop in town by the same name -- a beautiful shop, that's so wabi sabi, it doesn't seem to have a website.  I couldn't sleep last night, so used the extra waking hours to do some research. I want to know more about this wabi sabi way of life. It seems I've been heading into it for some time now without even knowing it, paring down our belongings, always ready to leave another cold or useless object behind, and trying to focus on the things that are truly important in life.  Read more
