Energy plants

[Image: Metropolis points us toward a new design project by Aleksandar Rodic. "Windfarm installation is controversial in many communities," Metropolis writes. The controversy is relatively superficial, however, as it's inspired by worry over "the visual impact of turbines... on the natural landscape." Thus, to improve "the aesthetics of renewable power generation," there is REimaginations, a traveling exhibit in which Rodic's image first appeared: "Compared to polluting energy sources, the exhibit suggests, 21st century wind farms represent an elegant blend of form and function." For a related project, see WorldChanging].

This is a really rather eye-catching image. I like the fresh-ness and it's an inventive treatment of the subject, emphasising its naturality.
But the remaining images, whilst attractive, are a little lacking in conviction. Just because they say it's beautiful, doesn't make wind power beautiful. This image convinces, while the other just show-and-tell.
A big complaint from residents near a wind farm in upstate New York, as reported on NPR a few months ago, was noise. Apparently the things hiss and rumble as they spin.
Accoustical design can be used to eliminate nuisance noise and create in small machines, and probably reduce noise from industrial size machinery as well.
But as long as we are making them look like plants, maybe we could tune them quietly hum pleasant chords?
Very interesting post, as for turbine design - most of the big manufacturers now design motors that emit no noise whatsoever, I believe that most of the complaints of this sort are a disguise for other stuff, for example the residents are upset because they are not invited to partcipate during the development process or that they are not given incentives to accept these alternative forms of energy, e.g. by cooperative schemes like in Denmark etc...if you are into wind energy maybe you wanna check this out: http://ecosophyingreece.blogspot.com/2006/07/quiet-revolution.html
