Coons vs. O’Donnell Debate: Post Mortem

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:26 am

I didn’t see it. But if you did, feel free to weigh in.

Here is a statement she issued after the debate:

Wilmington, Del. – Unfortunately, some pundits are already criticizing Christine O’Donnell, the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate seat in Delaware, for her answer to a Supreme Court question during Wednesday night’s debate. In response, O’Donnell released the following statement:

“Frankly, it makes sense that it wasn’t easy to recall some egregious Supreme Court cases when asked about ‘recent’ cases with which I disagreed. Such cases are few and far between with an outstanding bench of four solid constructionist Justices and a swing vote that often votes with them. There have been only a few cases during the Roberts and Rehnquist courts in which the liberal activist position has prevailed.

“One such case was Kelo v. City of New London in 2005 in which the court incoherently ruled that local governments could misuse the Fifth Amendment’s takings clause to throw private citizens out of their own homes and give the land to private developers to increase tax revenue.

“Such Constitution-shredding rulings should occur rarely, if ever. It is why it’s so important that Delaware’s next Senator commit to voting for federal judges and Supreme Court Justices who know how to read the plain English in the Constitution, apply that plain English to complex modern cases and don’t invent ‘emanations and penumbras’ that the Founders never intended. Unlike my opponent, who just tonight referenced his view that we have different Constitutions based upon what year it is, I believe that the original version serves just fine.

“Tonight Chris Coons said that ‘this campaign is a job interview.’ By the end of the debate it was clear that Mr. Coons does not deserve a promotion. His tax-and-spend record and the doubling of the unemployment rate during his tenure as New Castle County Executive were just two of the items on his political resume that Delaware voters will reject.

“I was grateful for the opportunity to speak directly to Delawareans and to lay out a common sense way forward.”

So there you have it. Allahpundit collects some post-debate analysis from various sources, which suggests that O’Donnell was thrown off by several questions, including questions about evolution and financial problems (did she not think this would come up), and that Coons was openly contemptuous of her, which might help her.

Robert Gibbs: Hijacker or Hypocrite?

Filed under: General — Karl @ 3:58 pm

[Posted by Karl]

I leave the obvious punchline for you, so I can get to this report from the Daily Caller’s Chris Moody:

The White House plans to continue attacking groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other conservative organizations for not disclosing the names of donors behind political ads. But during the 2004 Democratic primary campaign, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was involved with a political advocacy group that refused to reveal its own donors until the law required it.

***

Under campaign finance law, the Chamber is not required to release the names of its donors. When pressed by reporters as to why groups not mandated by law should disclose their donors, Gibbs said they should do it in “the spirit of political disclosure.”

During the 2003-2004 presidential primary season, however, Gibbs worked as the spokesman for a liberal advocacy group that ran attack ads against then-Democratic candidate Howard Dean. The “secretive” group, called Americans for Jobs, Health Care & Progressive Values, spent months organizing scathing ads without disclosing who was paying for them.

Gibbsy’s pals are best remembered as the sweethearts who savaged Dean as someone who could not stand up to Osama bin Laden. (more…)

Falcon Lake Murder Update: Cartel Sends Investigator’s Severed Head to Mexican Government

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:06 am

This puts to rest the crazy theory that the wife did it:

The severed head of a Mexican police commander investigating the fatal shooting of U.S. citizen David Michael Hartley on Falcon Lake was delivered Tuesday to Mexican military in a suitcase, authorities said.

The commander, identified as Rolando Flores Villegas, was one of the investigators that family members met during a meeting last week at an international bridge near Roma, said Cynthia Young, the mother of Hartley’s widow, Tiffany.

So we have cartels executing an investigator into the murder of an American. Is Obama ready to get involved yet?

P.S. If you think legalizing marijuana in California is the cure-all solution, think again. RAND says it will cut into the cartels’ profits, to be sure — but by no more than 3 percent.

Good News for O’Donnell: Zoominfo Profiles Can Be Verified by Anyone

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:59 am

When I first mentioned Christine O’Donnell’s Zoominfo profile I said:

A ZoomInfo spokesman claims that the “user verified” tag means O’Donnell verified the information on the ZoomInfo profile herself. Color me skeptical: how in the world would he know? ZoomInfo and LinkedIn should be more transparent — for example, they could release the e-mail address used by the person who set up the account.

Reader Aaron Worthing convinced Zoominfo that he is famed rock musician Tom Petty

BERJAYA

Aaron joins me in calling on Zoominfo to release the e-mail address of the person who set up the O’Donnell profile:

So Zoominfo, it’s time to step up. Disclose the email address used to verify this account. If not to us, at least to an appropriately skeptical reporter.

They can’t really claim privacy. O’Donnell can’t claim it because she says she didn’t set it up. Nobody else can because they would be imposters. Release the information.

Nice job by Aaron.

Looking at the Velvet Revolution and Justice Through Music Books

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:48 am

Chuck S. by e-mail (together with Dianna and Dustin in comments) found Velvet Revolution’s tax returns from 2006, 2007, and 2008. We also have tax returns from Justice Through Music from 2003, 2005 (with Schedule A), 2006, 2007, and 2008. All are .pdfs.

Feel free to look through them yourself and see what you find interesting. Notable aspects of the returns include large payments to unnamed independent contractors (Velvet Revolution) and unexplained large increases in rent (Justice Through Music).

Keep in mind that as a drug dealer, Kimberlin was used to fashioning his tax returns to forestall suspicion from the federal government. As Mark Singer reported in an October 1992 article in the New Yorker (subscription required):

To avoid the scrutiny of the tax authorities Kimberlin figured out how much he had spent in a given year, extrapolated the income that would be required to support such a life, added ten per cent, and filed a short-form tax return, taking the standard deduction. The tax code did not specifically require him to list his occupation, so he left that space blank. The only money he ever put in the bank was the money he used to pay taxes. He wrote only two checks a year — one to the Internal Revenue Service and the other to the Indiana Department of Revenue.

Consider this an open source project. Take a look and tell me what you see.

P.S. While looking at Velvet Revolution’s original articles of incorporation, reader Chuck S. found that one of the original Velvet Revolution directors, Ben Gelt, was arrested for drug trafficking in 2002. (The charge was later pled down to possession of marijuana.) Full details at this page. It appears that another director was Jeff Cohen, the founder of FAIR who used to appear on Fox News Watch.

Is a Hockey Fight Criminal?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 10:35 pm

Normally, you would think it is not. But is there any point where the line is crossed into criminal behavior?

Hockey is known as a violent sport but things took a turn for the worse on Saturday night between the Colorado Eagles and Odessa Jackalopes in an exhibition game.

After six fights in the first two minutes of the third period, Colorado player Brad Macmillian sucker-punched unaware Jacks player Dave Van Drunen, who then crumpled to the ice before a melee ensued.

Van Drunen suffered a broken jaw and broken nose and had surgery on Sunday morning to insert five plates and 18 screws.

. . . .

The Jacks confirmed that they have pressed charges against Macmillian and that more charges could be filed against others involved in the incident.

Perfect fodder for Internet debate. Go to it.

Joe Gelarden, Indianapolis Star Reporter Who Covered Brett Kimberlin, Weighs in on the Kimberlin Saga

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:05 pm

Over the weekend, I spoke with Joe Gelarden, the reporter who covered the Brett Kimberlin saga for the Indianapolis Star in the early ’80s.  Here is a clip from an eye-opening story written by Mr. Gelarden (.pdf) that details Brett Kimberlin’s alleged murderous plots to escape from prison and exact revenge on his enemies:

BERJAYA

Yesterday I sent Mr. Gelarden a link to my post on Kimberlin, as well as links to Liberty Chick’s post and my post about Kimberlin’s threat to sue.  I asked Mr. Gelarden for a reaction, and he sent me the following, which he was kind enough to authorize me to quote:

I have little sympathy for folks who plant bombs in public places, whether in Baghdad, Times Square, the London Subway or in a suburban shopping center in the heartland of America. I would hope those convicted while enjoying all the safeguards of the federal judiciary, learned their lessons in prison, and have become productive useful citizens.

I also hope those who have injured others along the way, would pay legally imposed damages to innocents they have injured.

I seem to remember that the DeLong family was trying to pick up a gym bag in a parking lot they thought had been dropped by a forgetful teenager. Their only crime was to attempt to save some other family the cost of a new pair of $50 sneakers. I believe the pain from the Speedway bomb blast was the direct cause of Carl DeLong’s suicide.

As for BK, and his claims of libel and character assassination, I seem to recall he was convicted of perjury in federal court before he got out of high school. I seem to remember his other claims seemed to vanish under close scrutiny. James Whitcomb Riley, the famed Hoosier Poet of the late 19th century once said: “If I see a bird that walks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck.”

‘Nuff said.

Joe Gelarden

I thank Mr. Gelarden for his time.

I am confident that we have not seen the end of this story. Stay tuned.

Blogger Tangles with Terrorist

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:07 am

Blogger Rusty Shackleford at The Jawa Report had a long and protracted blog war with a fellow named Samir Khan. Now Khan admits he is in Yemen and has joined al Qaeda. Details here.

No word on whether Samir Khan has threatened to sue Rusty for telling the truth about him, the way convicted bomber Brett Kimberlin yesterday threatened to sue me for telling the truth about him.

Brett Kimberlin Threatens to Sue Me; UPDATED with Second E-Mail from Kimberlin

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:16 pm

Just got this e-mail:

To Patterico:

Please take this email as an intent to sue you for your Oct 11, 2010 post on Patterico.com which has defamed and libeled me. I have just sued Socrates on which you rely for cyber stalking, defamation, libel, violation of privacy and interference with business. Socrates has been banned from many sites and forums for stalking many people including me. He is under criminal investigation for cyber bullying and cyber stalking. By corresponding with him and relying on his defamatory posts, you are conspiring with him and are just as liable as he.

Most of the things you write about in your post are false. If you have not removed the defamatory piece within 24 hours, I will proceed with legal action against you and will serve notice on your service provider that you are violating your terms of service by engaging in false, defamatory and abusive postings.

Let me assure you that you are not the first blog that has posted lies about me, yet each of them has removed the offending posts once I alerted them to the facts about Socrates and his spreading of lies.

Also, please provide me with your full name and address.

Thank you,
Brett Kimberlin

My response:

My post is based primarily on a number of published news articles. I ask you to specify anything in my post that you claim is false. If I have made any mistakes I am always happy to correct them. But I won’t take down anything that is true.

Stay tuned.

UPDATE: Kimberlin is referring to this post of mine in which I discussed his history as a convicted bomber, drug smuggler, perjurer, and suspected murderer.

If he actually sues, I’ll let you know. I may need to establish a litigation fund. (PayPal buttons are on the right.)

UPDATE x2 9:21 p.m.: Just got this e-mail:

I appreciate the quick response. Most of the information in the post is false. As noted, I put up with Socrates’ shit for too long, and finally sued him, he has been polluting the Internet with lies about me and Brad and now he gets a chance to defend it in a court of law.

I have no beef with you and I never even heard of you or your blog until today when I got the Google alert. I don’t want to get into a pissing match with you. I have filed over a hundred lawsuits and another one will be no sweat for me. On the other hand, it will cost you a lot of time and money and for what. I run a small non profit that works to inspire youth to get involved. I have only met Brad Friedman one time in my life. Your piece is a smear job against both me and Brad. I have gotten death threats all day today because of your and Liberty Chick’s post and I have to meet with the FBI tomorrow to give them copies. Have I ever posted anything, anywhere? Have I ever said or done anything to you?

Maybe you have some beef with Brad, but going after me to get to him is really a shameful way of resolving it. I can tell you for a fact that Brad Blog, Daily Kos, HuffPo, RawStory, and DU have all removed these type of posts once they were advised that they were false and that Socrates was behind them. I really urge you to pull the post and not post anything more about me.

Politics aside, I can see you are very passionate about what you do and I respect that. I would be happy to meet you, shake hands, have a beer or soy chai, and just have a chat.

Thanks Pat.
Brett

My response:

Once again: my post was based primarily on published news articles. I repeat: please specify anything in my post that you claim is false. I will correct mistakes if there are any, but I will not remove the truth.

There are obviously a lot of other things I could say. But I am going to leave it at that for now.

Brad Friedman’s Terrorist Pal Posing with Karl Rove

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:47 pm

If this doesn’t creep you out I don’t know what will. It’s Brad Friedman’s terrorist pal Brett Kimberlin posing with Karl Rove:

BERJAYA

Yeah, Brett the Bomber even got a picture of Rove’s car, complete with license plate. (I blacked that part out.)

Brad has the whole amusing and heartwarming story here.
