In mining country the government regulatory body put mine executives in charge of overseeing mine safety. Naturally, mines were run dangerously and without oversight until miners started getting trapped, blown up and suffocated. We come to learn that the mines have simply worked fines into their budgetary concerns. Massey Energy goes one further and appeals the fines clogging the courts with appeals and in the meantime they go right on their bloody yet profitable way without fixing any of their violations. In the Gulf region, Petroleum guys ran back and forth between Minerals Management and the oil companies depending who was in office at the time. If this season's gulf shrimp scampi Tastes like it came from the Gulf of Texaco, thank the revolving door between industry regulators and industry employees for the extra flavor. Didn't we hear too from one of the BP mud guys that even though they blew off the recommended number of supports, installing a fraction of what they were told to install, "So what it's done, we'll pay the fine if we have to...?"
In another permutation of this unethical, immoral and we would hope soon to be illegal gestalt, The Federal Aviation Administration has tapped another fox to watch over the henhouse of pilot training. Scott W. Foose who holds the title of VP of safety at The Regional Airline Association has been named by the FAA to lead the panel who will determine new safety regulations. All of the last 6 major crashes in the US have involved regional airlines who sub the work out from larger airlines. Wouldn't it stand to reason that if Foose was the VP for safety and oversaw 6 major crashes that he's in line for a demotion, not a promotion where he can interfere as he has all ready with the stipulations in a bill passed by congress intended to increase commercial pilot minimum training hour from 250 t0 1500 ? His expert input seeks to reducte the number of hours stipulated by congress from 1500 down to 500. Correct me as I am but a simple pedagogue, but wasn't this the kind of corner cutting and penny pinching that led to 3407's tragic outcome in the first place ? Forcing pilots like rebecca Shaw to fly sick, not checking on Marvin Renslow's resume to see that he'd had his issues with performance in the past ? Paying commercial pilots less than toll takers earn on The New York State Thruway ? Is he trying to save his buddies a few sheckels on training so they can afford to get their Super Bowl tickets in the same section this year ? As one might expect, the family members who have endured the crash, the loss, the details of the poorly trained, overworked and underpaid pilots and an unsuccessful visit from the subhumans of Westboro Baptist Church, are not having it. Just as they lobbied, shared and grieved together while bending the ears of their representatives, they are vowing to step back into the ring until this one is stopped. I believe they will prevail but it's a pathetic commentary on the influence of corporatism over humanity that they even have to do it.

What is the reason that the head of the FAA is able to ignore the recommendations from congressional committees like this? Where does he get off doing this? Does Congress or the White House have no authority over the person who has this job? I really don't get it.
