Krugman on Housing, Sept 2006

Professor Krugman on housing from Sept 2006.

Here is a quote from Dr. Krugman, in a "Paul Krugman responds to reader's comments" on the impact of mortgage equity extraction:

"Actually, a lot has been written on that, although mainly on blogs like calculatedrisk.blogspot.com, my go-to site on housing matters. So far the effect of the housing slump on consumer spending has been much less than I expected, although there are hints in the data that it's finally beginning to bite."
Paul Krugman, NY Times, July 2007

This is a video archive for my blog CalculatedRisk.blogspot.com.

The blog is focused on current topics in finance and economics, with an emphasis on housing, mortgage issues (including foreclosures and short sales) and the recent liquidity crisis.

On mortgage issues, my co-blogger (an experienced mortgage banker) has written a series of informative posts on how the mortgage business works: see The Compleat UberNerd. A few of the topics include: Mortgage Servicing, Negative Amortization, Private Mortgage Insurance, Foreclosure and REO, Mortgage Backed Securities, Delinquency and Default, Reverse Mortgages and Mortgage Origination Channels. A great collection of posts.

On housing, I've written extensively on housing supply and demand, the housing boom (and now housing bust), new and existing home sales and inventory, construction employment, residential investment and the possible impact of the housing bust on the overall economy. This has included posts on mortgage equity withdrawal, the possible negative impact on consumer spending and investment in commercial real estate (CRE).

Best to all.
