Feministing on Tour!

Since the Fall of 2009, Feministing has been traveling to college campuses, women’s organizations, and BBQ joints across the country and internationally, provoking a dialogue on the state of the feminist movement(s) today. We’ve discussed a range of topics as diverse as we are, from the Duke rape cases to genderqueer experience, from fishnet stockings to environmental justice, from online activism to Jessica Simpson. It was so much fun the first dozen times around that we’re hitting the road again this year!

Feministing on Tour: Offline and Unfiltered

Between mama grizzlies, the “he-cession,” and a rapidly shifting movement, there’s much to discuss about the state of feminism today (and where we’re heading). It’s never boring at our blog, and neither are our panels, at which we’re honored to each speak to our own experience of feminism, but also include a student panelist to bring a local perspective, and engage in a healthy discussion afterward.

We work with a number of different budgets to suit a variety of groups’ needs. We’re also thrilled to be working with Soapbox Inc. this year, the fantastic feminist speaking bureau founded by Amy Richards and Jennifer Baumgardner. In short, it’s going to be an exciting tour season!

If you’re interested in bringing Feministing to your center, campus or organization, email us here for more information on fees and availability.

The keynote panel, to feature three out of the six award-winning editors, will cover a range of hot topics, followed by a lengthy Q&A.

Questions we pose to one another and to the audience include:

  • How is the failing economy changing gender roles?
  • What’s up with the sexual climate on college campuses?
  • How has the internet transformed feminism?
  • Is there such a thing as “women’s issues” anymore?
  • Why can’t an older generation seem to embrace intersectional feminism?
  • Why are conservative women leaders (cough, Sarah Palin, cough) co-opting feminist language and what can we do about it?
  • Women of color have been burned by feminism. Is bridge building possible? What does it look like?
  • Is feminism today still a bonafide movement? If so, where’s the “moving?” Is there a fourth wave?

Additional bonuses: We can also conduct workshops on blogging for student/community groups during the day; Feministing sees spreading the word about the activist potential of blogging and educating people about the tools to make it happen as central to our mission. We’ll also be blogging about tour highlights along the way and will be featuring guest posts of student panelists we bring onto our sessions, giving worldwide attention to the work of your center and/or campus.

“The [Feministing Editors] are all intelligent, courageous women who are effective at talking about feminism and a wide range of feminist issues with all kinds of audiences.  Their visit did more than inspire students, answering their questions about things like how to be a feminist activist, how to use one’s voice effectively as a writer, how to have a feminist birth experience, or how best to use one’s college experience to develop into a skilled and active feminist.  They also confirmed that feminism is NOT dead, but is alive and kicking, among women of all generations.  It was a great pleasure to have them here, and I highly recommend them for all college campuses!”
