Some Of These Places...

Another one of Fox's unscientific online polls caught my attention. This time they are asking (push-polling) about the mosque being built two blocks from ground zero in New York City.

The question: Would you be all right with the construction of a large religious center in your town?

Notice how they don't actually say what type of religious center. The Fox viewer is left to determine that in their own mind. However, the results tell us exactly what's on the viewer's mind.

Yes -- Everyone has a right to practice their religion. I suppose it's nice to take some comfort in that 9% of the respondents are willing to uphold the constitution.

No -- Some of these places go way beyond religion. Really? I've always wondered what really goes on inside the Crystal Cathedral. Does this apply to all religions? I don't tend to hear much about people (particularly typical Fox viewers) protesting a large Christian church being built somewhere. Do you? The question didn't actually specify a religion. So can we conclude from this that typical Fox viewers are against all religious centers? And just what are these other things that go on at "these places?" Drugs? Sex? Rock-and-Roll?

I'm Not Sure Fair enough. You always need a category for the fence sitters. I will hope they realized it's a trick question.

I Don't Care Seems to have some overlap with the "Yes" answer above, but perhaps these people don't want to actually acknowledge that religious freedom is a right in this country.

Other I wonder what "other" meant to those who clicked on it. Is their position so nuanced that one of the previous categories didn't fit?

Of course the correct answer, in America, is Yes, it's all right. Religious freedom is a right, and despite the feelings of some to the contrary.

Many hide behind the false argument that this center is "too close." How close is too close? And who exactly gets to decide? Does the restriction apply to all religious centers around ground zero or just the Muslim ones?

The people who are building the Cordoba House did not have anything to do with 9/11. They do not deserve to be punished for the sins of others.

Hey, if they own the property, they can do what they damn well please with it. These protesters are fucking nuts. Muslims DIED in the Twin Towers, for heaven's sake. No one was spared. The hate just oozes from the christian fanatics. They would be happy in the Taliban.

Indeed. The irony is that the Christian fundamentalists have become the very thing they claim to hate: a fascist theocracy.
