Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.- Happy Birthday to ya!

Posted by ifelicious on January 16, 2009

That’s right.  I think so many people have forgotten Martin Luther King‘s actual birthday as we’ve moved holidays around here in the States over the years to fall nicely on the calendar.  His actual birth date was January 15, 1929.  He would have been 80 years old today.  Kind of eery that Obama is making history almost in alignment with King’s 80th birthday.

My mom took me to DC on the Mall around 1982 or 1983 for a demonstration/campaign to make MLK’s birthday a Federal holiday.  It was when Stevie Wonder sang his song “Happy Birthday (Martin Luther King, Jr.)” for the first time (I think…gotta do some research).  In any case, I am still glad that I was a part of history as this demonstration was the one that resulted in MLK’s birthday becoming a Federal Holiday.

Happy Birthday, Martin!

USAirways airbus makes emergency landing Hudson River

Posted by ifelicious on January 15, 2009

Below is kind of hard to follow, but it’s me typing periodically from the time of the crash and throughout the night…

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

How many times have we heard the safety speech at the start of each flight about what to do during a water landing? Pay attention, folks!  It’s possible.

usairwaysairbusa320

example of AirBus 320 (same model as one flown  in crash)

…but it is a copy of an Airbus A320

I’ll update this post more as I learn more…

but I’m watching the NBC Special Report that interrupted Ellen (then CNN later).  They’re not sure of the exact path (origin-destination) of this USAirways flight, but they’re guessing LaGuardia to Charlotte.  I’ve been status on this airlines for years and my hubby is chairman preferred so it’s just unsettling, naturally, as we prepare to fly to DC this coming weekend.  At the same time, things like this can happen at any time on any airline.

Flight 1549 en route from LaGuardia to Charlotte

146 passengers (estimate) 155 passengers including 2 pilots, 3 flight attendants

Airbus A320 (used for regional flights)

prelim report was pilot reported a double bird strike caused both engines to fail (confirmed later in evening)

Left LaGuardia airport coming from the north heading south down the middle of the Hudson River

eyewitnesses credit pilot for smooth landing given circumstances

entire fuselage intact (no plane parts seemed to have broken prior to or upon crash landing)

early reports is that pilot declared emergency and was aiming for runway likely Teterboro Airport in Jersey

aircraft went down in Hudson River around midtown and currently drifting downstream (4pm reported near Chelsea Piers area) at approx 2-3 knots (1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour)

not sure if anyone is still on the plane, but plane has taken in minimal water, staying afloat which is helping with rescue efforts

flight took off at 3:26pm, was in air for 6 mins before crash, reached about 3200 feet before emergency landing

Rescue 1, Rescue 5, Ladder 3 verified on the scene

Passengers beginning to come ashore, a passenger quoted “all passengers made it off the plane”

passengers made sure that injured, disabled, women and children got off first

4:15pm…passengers in process of reuniting with family/friends

pilot called out on flight “brace for impact”

4:37pm…plane is currently sinking into Hudson River, rear of aircraft was the first to take in water, reportedly authorities opened front doors (rear doors near wing already open) to help it to sink into water

water temperature is approx 32.5 degrees

4:44pm…I’m offline for now.  Will clean up post later or replace with full report.

Thank God this seems to have ended with the best possible outcome…everyone survived.  Kudos to the pilot(s) for putting their training into action and facilitating a relatively safe emergency landing and the flight crew for a remarkably smooth exit to safety.

10pm…everyone evacuated from plane

most released from hospitals, mild hypothermia was most common treatment, few minor injuries

1am…Airbus 320 weighs 81 tons!

air temperature at time of landing was 21 degrees farenheit, water temperature was 32.5 degrees farenheit

pilot was seasoned, trained in air force

Human Rights Watch makes it easy for you to take action

Posted by ifelicious on January 14, 2009

In my sea of net surfing today, I came across the Human Rights Watch homepage.  What I like about this organization is if you click the “Take Action” section of the homepage, you can pick a cause and they have pre-scripted emails for you to email your senator about a particular human rights issue such as ending violence against women.

So many of us think about things, debate amongst our friends, and rarely go the extra step to take action.  I’m dedicating this post to those of you who fit in this category.  It’s easy to do and at least you feel you have done your part.  Think about how much more credibility you carry when you discuss and debate once you’ve done something.

Check it out the site http://www.hrw.org/

I created a new category called “Dean’s List” and you’ll find a link to this site there.

From the Human Rights Watch “About Us” page…

Human Rights Watch is one of the world’s leading independent organizations dedicated to defending and protecting human rights. By focusing international attention where human rights are violated, we give voice to the oppressed and hold oppressors accountable for their crimes. Our rigorous, objective investigations and strategic, targeted advocacy build intense pressure for action and raise the cost of human rights abuse. For 30 years, Human Rights Watch has worked tenaciously to lay the legal and moral groundwork for deep-rooted change and has fought to bring greater justice and security to people around the world.

Former 2 year BART officer that killed Oscar Grant on New Year’s arrested

Posted by ifelicious on January 14, 2009

johannes-mesherle

Maybe justice will be served in this case.

Excerpt from San Francisco Chronicle

Johannes Mehserle, 27, of Lafayette was taken into custody in Douglas County, Nev., said Deputy Steve Velez of the Douglas County sheriff’s office. The arrest was also confirmed by David Chai, chief of staff to Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums.

Mehserle was arrested in the New Year’s Day shooting of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old supermarket worker from Hayward who was lying facedown after being pulled off a BART train by police investigating a fight. An Alameda County judge signed an arrest warrant alleging murder, and Mehserle surrendered without incident, authorities said…

…Authorities have been under immense pressure to take action in the case. On Tuesday, BART board President Thomas Blalock and board Director Carole Ward Allen sent a letter to Orloff, urging the district attorney to move expeditiously to complete the investigation and file charges if warranted.

Some Oakland community leaders and civil rights activists said the case is symbolic of larger problems with police officers using excessive force on young black men. Grant was black and Mehserle is white.

The arrest came on the eve of a protest scheduled for 4 p.m. today outside Oakland City Hall, the latest in a series of demonstrations in which BART has been accused of mishandling the investigation…

…His departure came the same day Grant was buried and a peaceful protest at the Fruitvale BART Station erupted into violence in downtown Oakland. Demonstrators set cars on fire and broke windows at dozens of businesses. By night’s end, police had arrested 105 people.

Grant’s family has filed a $25 million legal claim against BART, signaling an intention to sue for damages. The family’s attorney, John Burris, said late Tuesday that he was pleased to hear of Mehserle’s arrest…

The question that my husband and I have been debating, and I honestly don’t know the answer:

Are transit police officers fully trained police officers?

Was this BART officer just a hired security service or a full fledge police officer?

To me, it makes some difference because it could speak to his ability to handle this situation and his likelihood to panic.  That’s my hubby’s theory is that he simply panicked and shot Oscar.  If he’s hired security, then I don’t think he should even carry a gun.  Taser, yes.  Gun, no.

Here’s a little blurb I found on wikipedia regarding transit officers…

“Depending on the jurisdiction, they may not have any more authority than a private security firm”

See my other post on this tragedy entitled “NEW YEAR’S DAY SHOOTING OF OSCAR GRANT AT BART STATION IN OAKLAND.  LET’S TALK ABOUT IT.“  True to the title of the aforementioned post, let’s keep this dialog going.

The name "Mohammed" no longer top baby name in UK

Posted by ifelicious on January 14, 2009

Not that this is super surprising, but it’s interesting that someone did the research to find that all forms of the name Mohammed went from being the 2nd most popular name in the UK in 2007 to not even making the list a year later.

Read full post on USA Today’s Faith and Reason blog- NAME “MOHAMMED” MYSTERIOUSLY VANISHES IN THE UK

I like this USA Today Today’s Faith and Reason blog, by the way, so you may see me refer to it more often now since I enjoy intellectual discussion related to religion.
