BAZAAR SUMMER

By J. PATRICK BROWN

The radical craftists of the Bazaar Bizarre are taking their wares into the open sunshine this weekend. Here are six designers to see amongst the many.

THIS WEEK IN THE DIG

VIOLENT COMMUNITY

An unusual thing happened at a Boston City Council hearing last week. The councilors shut up and listened.

No experts or bureaucrats testified. Instead, City Councilor at Large Ayanna Pressley called in officials from the Boston Police Department and the Boston Public Health Commission, as well as the Suffolk County district attorney and Suffolk County sheriff, to listen to the stories of over 20 speakers who brought framed photographs, posters and memories of loved ones slain on the streets of Dorchester, Mattapan and Jamaica Plain.

CASH FOR HOMES

Keeping public housing from falling apart

The Boston City Council will try to solve a state-funding puzzle Tuesday, August 17th, when they hold a hearing on the lack of available cash for Boston's state-sponsored affordable housing developments, where frustrated tenants say half-assed support has left them hanging for years.

THINGS ARE GETTING capital-G Goofy over at the G section of the Boston Globe. Boston's source for TV listings, movie showtimes (remember those?) and the wacky world of comics, like the LOL-worthy Pooch Café, continues to test the boundaries of the edges of the envelope of journalism by ROFLizing their cover text.

TO THE MANIACAL RED SOX FAN AT MY LOCAL BAR

I only have a digital antenna at my home, so I occasionally go to the local pub to catch a Sox game on NESN. But lately, I have been assaulted by your completely out-of-control use of the F-bomb.

I'm no devout Baptist, but bringing your (wife? girlfriend?) to the bar and proceeding to scream at the flat-screen TV is not only uncomfortable, but totally F@$#$*% uncalled for.

"What the [F-bomb] is [F-bombing] Francona doing, the [F-bombing] [F-bomb]!!" Well, I don't know, good sir, to be quite honest.

AVEDON FASHION

An incomplete look at a complete master

Richard Avedon began work at Harper's Bazaar in the 1940s, and from then until his death in 2004, he revolutionized both the world of fashion and the American ideals of beauty, youth and the world outside of us.

HARDLY COMING

My boyfriend and I are straight college students, and he's always wanting to try new things. Recently, he asked to put a finger in my ass while we were having sex. Someone did that to me before, but it felt uncomfortable and it kinda hurt. I told my boyfriend that he could do it once and then I would decide whether to let it continue. So we tried it. It still felt uncomfortable and still kinda hurt. But I never came so hard in my life!

Now the question: If it's uncomfortable, but it made me feel amazing and come really hard, what should I do? Continue with it? Or tell him to find some other way of getting me to that point again?

EDIBLE FLOWERS

Chomp while you romp

For most urban farmers, or those marked with a green thumb, the garden is divided into two sections: one for vegetables for the plate, and one for gorgeous perennials for the table. However, many culinarians in the city have found new ways to use the subtle floral flavors usually used as aromatics in perfumes and soaps.

THIS WEEK IN MOVIES RATED BY DANGEROUS 3-D FISH

PATRIK AGE 1.5 | KILLER DEATH FISH

The story of a typo ... and a nonrefundable investment. Goran (Gustaf Skarsgård) and his husband (Torkel Petersson) have to struggle to find an agency that will let them adopt (because they both have dicks), so they're elated to find Patrik (Thomas Ljungman). A month later, he is dropped off (unaccompanied), but he's not the 1.5 year old they can nurture the homophobic nature out of, he's a 15 year old with a criminal history of aggravated assault. FLIM FEST

Hollywood east southeast

Flim [sic—Ed.] Fest began, perhaps, as all great film festivals begin: with terrible short films being projected onto the blue fitted bedsheet of festival co-founder Kevin James (no, not that Kevin James). "People thought that was the coolest shit, though," says co-founder Joe Botsch. Despite these ghetto-ass origins, audiences haven't been deterred.

TITUS ANDRONICUS

None truer currency

It's been over 400 years since Shakespeare wrote his bloodiest tragedy, Titus Andronicus, but the play's only recently been acknowledged as an important piece of art and history. It only took New Jersey's Titus Andronicus five short years to prove themselves as an important piece of modern rock.

WEIRD STALK, TOO

The evolving, semi-freakish Whitehaus Family Record ensemble of experimental artists is hosting its follow-up to last year's eerily popular weird-art fest, Weird Stock. Although joined by several cross-country performers, the festival will be on home soil, around the corner from the collective's renowned JP living room, where folk music, spoken word and a tribal vibe has flourished.

PLUSHGUN

Plushgun has finally managed to release their debut album after a slew of EPs, lineup changes and various hairstyles. Singer and elite hipster (he hails from Brooklyn) Dan Ingala caught up with us from the road.

BIG GROWTH, BUT CAN THEY KEEP UP?

According to recent numbers published by the Brewers Association, the US now boasts 1,625 breweries—the highest figure in over 100 years. Craft beer sales rose 12 percent and the volume of beer sold went up 9 percent over the first half of last year, although the collective beer industry volume sales were down 2.7 percent. And since July 2009, 100 new brewers have joined the craft beer party.
