Yesterday, the Iowa Independent broke the story that Jeremy Walters — a Republican candidate for the Iowa State house — posted Facebook messages in which he quoted biblical verses saying that gay people should be “put to death” and suggested that AIDS is a punishment for the sin of homosexuality:
Walters’ statements were immediately condemned by One Iowa, the state’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization, and the Iowa Republican party, leading the candidate to remove the posts. But in a subsequent interview with the Wonk Room, Walters explained that his outburst was motivated by the recent Prop 8 decision and that he was still uncertain if God was trying to kill gay people. You’re operating under some incorrect assumptions here.
First, liberals don’t “fully support” any religion. What we support is the right to worship as one wishes, in accordance with the first amendment. Liberals are as diverse as anyone else when it comes to personal religious matters. Some of us are Christians, some are Jews, some are atheists, etc. We all have different personal theological viewpoints, and we don’t “fully support” any theology as a monolithic bloc.
Second, Islam doesn’t “specifically” target gays for beheading or any other form of execution. The closest the Quran comes to condemning homosexuality is to condemn any sexual act outside of marriage. And the Quran doesn’t give any specific penalty for violators. There are, however, some predominately Muslim countries that have such laws. But the Quran isn’t to blame. Unlike the Old Testament, which DOES call for death for homosexual activity in Leviticus. Of course, Leviticus bans a whole lot of things, many punishable by death, that have already been detailed by other posters.
Third — you really think that liberals think we shouldn’t invade or bomb countries like Iran because they execute homosexuals? And you think liberals want to somehow protect that right, as in, “oh no, we can’t invade that country because they execute gay people and we want them to continue doing that”? Dude — what have you been smoking? I doubt you will find many liberals who want to see gays executed — that’s more of a wingnut thing. It’s just that we tend to think we need better reasons to bomb other countries than their system of laws. If we were to invade, occupy, and change the regime of every country in the world that had laws we didn’t like, we wouldn’t have the resources.

There are more/older fragments of the Christian bible than any other document of antiquity in existence. It says what it says. However, much of what it says happens to be stoopid.
This isn’t unique to Christianity/Judaism/Islam. All ancient texts say a lot of silly things. The practice of theology is to determine which points made should be highlighted, and which should be downplayed. Without that, every religion would still be as ridiculous as it was when it started out as a wacky local cult.
