Palin Writes Down Cost Of Extending Bush Tax Cuts On Her Hand, But She Still Gets It Wrong

Since he was on the campaign trail, President Obama has proposed renewing the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts for the lower- and middle-class, while allowing them to expire on schedule at the end of the year for the richest two percent of Americans. Republicans, however, have begun to obfuscate the issue by saying that the end of the year will bring history’s largest tax increase, deliberately leaving out that Democrats have proposed extending most of the cuts.

Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) pulled this rhetorical trick last week, saying “Democrats are poised to allow the largest tax increase in American history to take effect,” and on Fox News Sunday today former half-term governor Sarah Palin went down the same road. Fox’s Chris Wallace rightly pointed out that “the Republicans keep talking about being deficit hawks. This is $678 billion you are not going to pay for.” Palin responded “no, this is going to result in the largest tax increase in U.S. history. Again, it’s idiotic.”

Wallace proceeded to let Palin spend the next minute reading from notes on paper that she had written down. He interrupted her just for a moment to ask if she had anything written down on her hand, to which she responded that she did:

PALIN: My palm isn’t large enough to have written all my notes down on what this tax increase, what it will result in.… Democrats are poised to cause the largest tax increase in U.S. history, it’s a tax increase of $3.8 trillion in the next ten years and it will have an effect on every single American who pays an income tax. Small businesses, especially, will be hit hardest. Small businesses account for roughly 70 percent of our job creation in this country. So raising taxes on these employers is the worst thing that can happen.

WALLACE: Can I ask you, what do you have written on your hand?

PALIN: $3.8 trillion in the next ten years, so I have didn’t say $3.7 trillion and get dinged by the liberals saying I didn’t know what I was talking about.

Watch it:

Despite the preparation of her “cheat sheet,” she still doesn’t know what she is talking about.

For one thing, according to the Pew Economic Policy Group, an extension of all of the Bush tax cuts will cost $3.1 trillion over ten years, once the costs of servicing the debt are factored in. But no one has proposed allowing them all expire, and it’s incredibly disingenuous of Republicans to claim otherwise, especially since it was a budget gimmick by former President George W. Bush to include the ten-year sunset at all.

Extending just the cuts for the wealthiest two percent of Americans will cost $830 billion over ten years. As Center for American Progress Associate Director for Tax Policy Michael Linden wrote, “to put that figure in perspective, $830 billion is enough to pay for all veterans’ hospitals, doctors, and the rest of the Veteran’s Affairs health system, plus the United States Coast Guard, plus the Food and Drug Administration, plus the operation and maintenance of every single national park for the entire 10-year period — with more than $100 billion left over.”

It was good that Wallace pointed out to Palin that Republicans are being hypocritical by complaining about deficits at the same time they’re calling for renewing huge tax breaks for the wealthy, but he then let her spew irresponsible claims that have no basis in reality.

First if this is true then there are a sh*t load of completely ignorant people in this country. If this is the case then a quote from Wednesday Addams is totally appropriate:

    Be afraid, be very afraid.

Despite the preparation of her “cheat sheet,” {Palin} still doesn’t know what she is talking about.

    – - I was never one who believed that Barack Obama could – in a mere two years – repair the enormous damage of decades of unfunded entitlement and defense spending, two disastrously conceived, off-budget and negligently prosecuted wars, a financial market collapse, the worst recession since the 1930s, two burst bubbles in tech and housing, and the importation of torture into the American way of war. Maybe I over-estimated how much the GOP might learn from their appalling record in the new millennium – but that would require an admission of failure that they seem incapable of.
Nonetheless, the sheer difficulties and resistance that Obama has met with – from the FNC propaganda channel to the balls-free liberal press to the utopian activist left and deranged radical right – is remarkable.

Oh, and Palin is the mayor of Crazytown.

The real Republican agenda is not reduction of debt, it is about making American broke enough to get rid of social programs. This was the real reason for the wars and the rich people tax breaks. Just like “1984″ Republicans don’t want to govern or lead or help they want power for powers sake. 36. Badmoodman says:

    Tawdry says:
It’s a dirty shame that someone so unimportant, contemptible and trivial has become a big part of politics in this country. How does this happen?

    – - I read this awhile back and sounds good to me:

The political parties are weaker than they once were. The elites cannot control grass-roots Internet-driven phenomena. Look at Obama. He seems a natural president now, but Washington dismissed his chances – as they are now dismissing Palin’s – right up to the Iowa caucuses. And because Palin is such a terrifying – truly terrifying – prospect for the US and the world, I think such complacency, rooted in cynicism about Palin’s mercenary nature, is far too reckless.

Look: what we have seen this past year is the collapse of the RNC as it once was and the emergence of a highly lucrative media-ideological-industrial complex. This complex has no interest in traditional journalistic vetting, skepticism, scrutiny of those in power, or asking the tough questions. It has no interest in governing a country. It has an interest in promoting personalities and ideologies and false images of a past America that both flatter and engage its audience. For most in this business, this is about money. Roger Ailes, who runs a news business, has been frank about what his fundamental criterion is for broadcasting: ratings not truth. Obviously all media has an eye on the bottom line – but in most news organizations, there is also an ethical editorial concern to get things right. I see no such inclination in Fox News or the hugely popular talkshow demagogues (Limbaugh, Levin, Beck et al.), which now effectively control the GOP. And when huge media organizations have no interest in any facts that cannot be deployed for a specific message, they are a political party in themselves.

Add Palin to the mix and you have a whole new machine in American politics – one with the capacity, as much as Obama’s, to upend the established order. Beltway types roll their eyes. But she’s not Obama, they say. She doesn’t know anything, polarizes too many people, has lied constantly and still may have dozens of skeletons in her unvetted closets.

To which the answer must be: where the fook have you been this past year?

It doesn’t matter whether she’s uneducated, unprincipled, unaware and unscrupulous. The more she’s proven incapable of the presidency, the more her supporters believe she is destined for it. It’s a brilliant little gig she’s devised. She may be ignorant, but she is not stupid. She has the smarts of all accomplished pathological liars and phonies. And this time, she will not even bother to go on any television outlets other than Fox News. She will be the first presidential nominee never to have had a press conference. She will give statements by Facebook. She will speak directly to the cocoon that is, at least, twenty percent of Americans. The press, already a rank failure in exposing her fraudulence, will be so starstruck by the chance to make money that we will never have a Couric-style interview again. it will be Oprah all the time. Because Palin lives in an imaginary world, the entire media world will be required to echo it or be shut out.

More to the point, creating a false narrative around a total phony and peddling her as a savior has no financial downside for the FNC/TalkRadio party. So this phenomenon will grow and grow. I mean: can you imagine Romney or Pawlenty inspiring this sort of fervor?

  37. Eugene Debs sponsored by the Church of the presumptuous assumption says:

    toonces

Think about what is REAL, that is DISPOSABLE income. In what REALITY is it fair that some, that is the rich pay a MUCH LOWER percentage of their disposable income in taxes than the middle class and poor. Also consider that a majority of the money the rich pay in taxes they pay in capital gains which is paid at a LOWER rate than the taxes I pay on my labor. As Abraham Lincoln said labor is more important than capital and deserves much more consideration since capital would not EXIST without labor.

  38. dbadass says:

Why would a person who has been successful and loves their country not wish to pay more to support that country? Who is that shallow and materialistic?

I know lots of special needs parents who find it disgusting that Palin lugged that special needs baby around the country like a sack of potatoes. Many mothers sacrifice their own careers to care for their children in a way that is most beneficial to their children and that is especially true of mothers with special needs children. Then again most people who become political leaders spend enough time with their children preparing them for college and their futures that becoming pregnant at 16 isn’t an issue. If somebody is that poor a mother with their first born how would be expect any better of their 5th born or their grandchild they are raising as their own.

Compassion? About raising that child, why would a women who is 8 months pregnant and knows the child has Down Syndrome travel 4000 miles just to give a speech she could have done by teleconference. Then after leaking fluids she tells no one and still gives the speech. After the speech does she go to a hospital in Texas that has an NICU? No she gets on a plane that has no medical facilities or personal on board to help her and tells no one she is pregnant and may be going in labor. Plane lands in Anchorage does she go to a hospital there with an NICU? No, she gets in a car for an one hour ride on dark, snowy roads to the hospital in Wasilla that does not have an NICU. Compassion my ass.

Really doesn’t sound like Simple Sarah got off to a good start raising her special-needs child.

MORE from The Wall Street Journal read it and weep.

Palin’s Hockey Rink Leads To Legal Trouble in Town She Led
The biggest project that Sarah Palin undertook as mayor of this small town was an indoor sports complex, where locals played hockey, soccer, and basketball, especially during the long, dark Alaskan winters….

Ms. Palin marched ahead, making the public case for a sales-tax increase and $14.7 million bond issue to pay for the sports center, which was to feature a running track, basketball courts and a hockey rink. At the time, the city’s annual budget was about $20 million. In a March 2002 referendum, residents approved the mayor’s plan by a 20-vote margin, 306 to 286. The city cleared roads, installed utilities and made preparations to build.

Later that year, Ms. Palin’s final one as mayor, the federal judge reversed his own decision and ruled that the property rightfully belonged to Mr. Lundgren. Wasilla had never signed the proper papers, the court ruled.

The only catch was that the city began building roads and installing utilities for the project before it had unchallenged title to the land. The misstep led to years of litigation and at least $1.3 million in extra costs for a small municipality with a small budget. What was to be Ms. Palin’s legacy has turned into a financial mess that continues to plague Wasilla.

Didn’t the Bush/Republican tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 cause the largest federal budget deficit increase in American history?

And I haven’t yet heard the magic words from President Obama in which he states that if Congress (and the Republican/Blue Dog Democrat caucus) send a bill to his desk extending these further-deficit-exploding tax cuts for the wealthy, he will veto it.

Simple, straightforward, “this is a line I will not allow to be crossed” statement. Maybe President Obama has told the wealthy-backing and wealthy-backed Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats this in private, you know, because President Obama doesn’t like to embarrass them…while we all know that they have no problem at all with trying to embarrass him.

So, the deceitful, back-stabbing, country-stabbing, budget-stabbing Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats roll-out their equally deceitful talking point that not extending the Bush/Republican tax cuts will be the largest tax increase in American history, leaving out that the unfunded Bush tax cuts have already added trillions of dollars to our nation’s budget deficit and extending these unfunded Bush tax cuts will add trillions more…as if they all had this planned. Why else would they lie? Why else would they advocate something that will be a disaster for America, which over the upcoming years will be the equivalent of 100 (maybe 1,000) 9/11 attacks on our country and our nation’s citizens?

Not only does she not know what she is talking about, but when she “talks” that voice of hers has a blaring, abrasive, nails-on-chalkboard sound to it. (shudder)

That reminds me: Australia’s new prime minister, who’s also the minister for edgergashun, usually knows what she’s talking about, and her opinions make much more sense than those uttered by the atavistic shadow PM, but you should hear her voice.

If Sarah Palin’s bleating is fingernails on chalkboard then Julia Gillard’s untrained delivery is a vuvuzela with the flu, designed to turn off a sizable minority of the people during Australia’s federal election on Saturday 21 August.

In comparison, the Bombe Alaska’s hokey tinkly tones are Muzak to the ears.
