Retired General and Bush Official Blast Mosque Opposition
August 16, 2010 5:39 pm ET by Joe Strupp
A retired general and a former Bush Administration official harshly criticized efforts to block the building of a mosque in lower Manhattan, contending such a position is unconstitutional and could harm U.S. relations overseas.
Major General Paul Eaton, a retired Army commander who oversaw the training of Iraqi troops following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and Lawrence Wilkerson, a retired Army colonel and former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell, both slammed right-wing opposition to the Mosque.
"What we are seeing out of the Republican Party here is just appalling," Eaton told me Monday. "From a constitutional perspective, from a common sense perspective and from a military perspective."
Eaton added, "This is an extreme right-wing backlash to what we stand for: freedom to practice religion of your choice."
Eaton also pointed out that it is a local decision in which federal officials should not be involved: "It is a very local issue."
Wilkerson agreed, stating: "If they want to build something on private land, it is unconstitutional to say otherwise. It is all about religious freedom, they can build wherever they want to build."
Both men also pointed to a detrimental impact such opposition can have on U.S. relations overseas with Islamic countries, and even put U.S. military men and women at risk.
"It is like offering your opponent two or three whips with which to beat you," said Wilkerson. "The impact on our military people would be injurious if we say 'no.' It would put another instrument in the hands of those who want to exploit the fear that Americans are at war with Islam and not the radical elements within it."
Eaton echoed that view, noting: "It is a slap in the face to a great many people we wish to have as allies. We are trying to make allies of our colleagues in Iraq and Afghanistan and this is not helpful."
He also added, "This is unhelpful to the American fighting men and women and counter to the image we wish to portray in Afghanistan and Iraq."

The biggest problem for the U.S. in ts relationship with the rest of the world is the rank hypocrisy that is so often on display. The most common one being the matter of national sovereignty - in this matter, the sovereignty of all other nations is so often subject to the sovereignty of the U.S. whether it is the matter of extra judicial imprisonments (extraordinary rendition) or any of the other much bragged about "rights", such as freedom of religion, that are violated in other nations and even, so it seems, at home as a matter of expediency.
It doesn't take much sophistication to spot a humbug and it is the height of arrogance to assume that "foreigners" don't see the rank hypocrisy so often inherent in the sanctimonious preaching we get from the U.S.
Maybe then someone else can speak to the matter..
Speaking truth to/about progressives with a shout out to Imam Feisel Abdul Rauf and his Cordoba House, which I'm certain will contain a significant amount of space dedicated to calling the form of violent islam that caused that crime, pure evil.
Second, the point to your link would be... what exactly? You might want to read the end of that again.
His opinion has nothing to do with what the General and Colonel addressed. Nothing at all.
And last... " I'm certain will contain a significant amount of space dedicated to calling the form of violent islam that caused that crime..."
Your opinion, no matter how "certain" it is, is nothing but that, an opinion. It's certainly not a valid arguing point.
As for the link:
I think these two see the purpose behind this mosque and the absence of supposed offense if a more appropriate option is chosen as to placement, contents and openness of the mosque. Their experience as muslims, understanding the tyrannical rule that muslims live under outside of North America speaks to how the vindication of islam is paramount, especially when compared to the success of the freedoms of infidels economically.
You're correct, my opinion of evil behind the crime of 9-11 is mine, but I think shared by a vast amount of Americans. That until we see muslims and their leaders demonstrating abhorrence for the terrorists and the reasons for their actions, then it will always be difficult to believe that muslims only want equity, not superiority.
Put on your reading glasses, PC. The demonstration you want is here, not that I think it will change your opinion a whit.
This is all well and good, but where are the muslims continually giving us chapter and verse? Where in here are the points that we hear from this imam?
Maybe these guys ought to be out and about in Afghanistan speaking to the taliban about this document. Imagine the reception they might receive.
So again, until muslims make an effort to demonstrate this document, share its points in every news conference and declare these jihadists as bound for hell, I find it hard for them to convince anyone of their sincerity.
When pat robertson, or jerry falwell made their off the wall statements, Christians, their leaders and the media never left them off the hook. We should expect the same for the religion of peacers.
The point of this piece was to show the DAMAGE that this faux controversy stirred up by Fox and the hate talkers is doing. It is putting our troops in danger. You don't care and neither does Fox and the hate talkers. Why do you hate our troops and our country, fauxconservative?
BTW, reposting over and over and over again an opinion piece by folks who are not members of the group wanting to build the community center still does not make it valid to the issue. Nice try. I'm sure that it was a popular link on freerepublic, but it is completely irrelevant.
My link to a Canadian newspaper were no different than media matters (for very little), giving a viewpoint from 2 people as gospel. Both had concerns, I believe that powell and the other general were reflecting the same naivete that the muslim writers saw in the genuflections of leftys in the US. They saw this as DAMAGING, creating an unnecessary backlash against muslims because of how insensitive this pure mischief making because of this imam's stance.
I don't know of the link's popularity on any other site, but I know that a few lefty's were confronted with the truth. Besides, I go to mm(FVL) because I feel I am called to enlighten folks here. Just like with Zaccheaus, "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.", give some Bible thumping a chance here.
Remember, that anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord, will be saved! :>
Did you even read the article MMfA posted ^up there?
Canadians don't have to concern themselves with our Constitution, you dope - WE DO!!!!!
