NRSC Chairman Cornyn Responds To President Obama’s Fundraiser In Illinois For Alexi Giannoulias
U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), issued the following statement regarding President Barack Obama’s fundraiser for Democrat Senate hopeful Alexi Giannoulias (D-IL) in Chicago today:
"It will certainly be interesting to hear how President Obama squares his rhetoric slamming fat cat bankers with his decision today to campaign for a candidate who loaned money to the mob, made millions of dollars without paying taxes, and whose risky loan decisions led to a government takeover of his family’s bank.
"President Obama firmly stated earlier this year that ‘bankers don’t need another vote in the United States Senate, yet less than 90 days before the midterm elections, he’s campaigning for a failed mob banker who loaned money to known criminals and lost $150 million of taxpayer dollars after he gambled away Illinois’ college savings. How times have changed for Democrats in Washington.
"After witnessing the lack of accountability and responsibility in Illinois and the reckless spending by Democrats in Washington, voters understand that they need a leader who will instill real change. That’s why we are confident that Illinois voters will elect a proven leader in Mark Kirk to the U.S. Senate this November."
Reid's Disgenuous Double-Speak
Take note of this story from today’s Congressional Quarterly, which highlights the Washington double-speak that we hear so often from Senator Harry Reid.
By way of background, Senator Reid has for months bragged about how solar energy is the wave of the future, and claims that under his leadership, he has delivered solar jobs for Nevada. His campaign even ran a television ad taking credit for this - click here to watch. Yet, when Senator Reid was forced to look for a budget offset this week to pay for another $26.1 billion stimulus bill, he chose to cut $1.5 billion from the Department of Energy’s renewable energy loan program.
That’s right. Out of the entire $3.5 trillion federal budget - with all of the waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government - Harry Reid chose to cut money from one of the very programs that he himself claims will deliver jobs for Nevada.
As the article points out below, the Solar Energy Industries Association sent a letter to all Senators before this vote took place stating point blank that "Solar investors, who have relief on the existence of the loan guarantee program when making their business plans, and the industry’s tens of thousands of employees, would be left high and dry" as a result of this specific budget cut. Yet Senator Reid apparently chose to ignore this warning from the solar energy industry - an industry that he claims to champion when he’s in Nevada - and he led the way to cut their loan guarantee funding.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, here’s where it gets even more interesting: When Senator Reid is asked about what he did in order to pay for his stimulus bill, he claimed today that "that money is just temporarily gone."
That, ladies and gentleman, is the epitome of Washington double-talk - courtesy of embattled four-term Senator Harry Reid.

In California, a new Rasmussen survey shows Republican Carly Fiorina continuing to close the gap on embattled incumbent Barbara Boxer.
Lee Fisher Campaign In Increasing Disarray
In Ohio, failed Democrat jobs czar Lee Fisher is desperately attempting to convince voters, donors, and the media not to count out his flailing campaign, despite its increasing disarray. The Columbus Dispatch reports: More ominous, however, is that after spending about $3 million to defeat Brunner, Fisher trails Portman by nearly a 9-to-1 ratio in campaign funds. As of June 30, Portman had $8.8 million on hand; Fisher had $1.3 million...
