Oh, what a terrible mess on Eagles' O-line

Sniping, injuries and mix-ups are at the heart of the problem. Coach Andy Reid doesn't seem alarmed with the recent turn of events.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A week of Eagles training camp is in the books, and the chapter on the offensive line has read the worst.

There have been injuries, snafus and bad snaps. And the sorry situation has been exacerbated in that the substitute center said he can't look to the veteran he's replacing - and whose job he's trying to take - for guidance.

With Jamaal Jackson on the shelf with a knee injury, the inexperienced Nick Cole has taken over at center and struggled with the snap and other parts of the job.

After practice on Monday, Cole, 26, was asked if the 30-year-old Jackson helps with some pointers.

"I don't want to talk about that," Cole said.

Does Jackson help you out in any way?

"Nah."

Is it because he's trying to keep the secrets of the trade to himself?

"We don't really talk about it," said Cole, who added that he wants to make coach Andy Reid's choice of a starter "a harder decision" when Jackson returns.

Jackson, through a team spokesman, was asked if he helps instruct his backup.

"Me and the other centers talk all the time in meetings and on the field during practice and have a great relationship," Jackson responded.

There is no date for when Jackson can start practicing, but Reid has said that the center, who is rehabbing with the training staff, is unlikely to return by the season opener.

So that leaves the job for Cole - for now.

On Monday, Cole's shotgun snaps went low, high and one time led to a fumble. In the afternoon, he and quarterback Kevin Kolb worked overtime on the exchange.

"There's so many things being thrown at Nick right now," Kolb said. "He's got a lot of stuff going through his mind and sometimes more than we normally have."

And that is just one of the line's issues.

The foot injury that has sidelined starting left guard Todd Herremans has been deemed a minor by Reid. But Herremans has yet to practice with the team since minicamp in early May.

The line suffered another casualty Monday when starting right guard Stacy Andrews missed the afternoon session with an unspecified shoulder injury.

That's three regular interior line starters out of action. But Reid was not alarmed.

"I'm good with the [backups] we have," Reid said. "Whoever is there we're good with. We're lucky to have depth there."

With the starting center, left guard and right guard sidelined, Max Jean-Gilles and Mike McGlynn have filled in for Herremans and Andrews, respectively, and Cole has taken over for Jackson. So Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was asked if the injuries made an acquisition necessary.

"We like the guys we have," Roseman said. "But like at any other position, if we find something that we think helps out football team then we'll do it. But I like the guys we have."

The Eagles didn't add a single offensive lineman in the off-season, and Roseman pointed out that the team has three younger lineman - tackle King Dunlap, guard Fenuki Tupou and McGlynn - they have developed and believe are ready to contribute.

Cole started the first 14 games of last season at guard primarily in place of Andrews, who they signed even though he had knee surgery in November 2008.

Andrews, however, never quite made it back from surgery, and ended up inactive on game days. He's still trying to get caught up.

"I know I still have things to work on," Andrews said. "But it'll come."

Said Reid: "He's working through it, learning, and doing well, I think."

The Eagles' tackles - Jason Peters and Winston Justice - haven't caused as much concern, although Justice was whistled for back-to-back false starts Monday. Reid pulled the right tackle for a snap and inserted Dunlap.

The Eagles said McGlynn, another of the young linemen, would compete at center because Cole is so versatile at guard. But the third-year Pittsburgh product has yet to take a snap with the first team.

"I still consider it a full competition," McGlynn said.

Its obvious Cole can't play center, and that Andrews has "weak headcase" in his bloodlines -- a bit shocking that Reid, who loves to talk about the importance of the offensive line, has done nothing about these two, nor Herremans. And I can't take any roster statements seriously when they are made by a chump named "Howie". I am Oppressed.

"We're lucky to have depth there." Who is Andy kidding there is no depth on the oline. What happens if Herremans is still banged up and Peters misses a game or 2 whos the LT undrafted FA A.Howard or K.Dunlap. Cole is not a center and it will be a huge mistake for him to start the season at center just like Reid starting the season with no Fullback, KR, MLB, or Saftey the past few years. I could see it now with bad snaps that causes fumbles and getting pushed around. W.Justice is weak period i dont like him starting he jumps offsides to much and gets beat by average DE's. Andrews is Andrews aka headcase. I have no faith in him he has alot to prove to me. The whole Oline is a messs. I think its the worst Oline in the Andy Reid era. The only real quality guy we have is Peters and even he wasnt great. The backups are A.Howard never started a game, M.Mcglynn never started a game, Cole who cant play center, Max Jean who cant pass block, and K.Dunlap who hasnt shown anything. Yea Andy thats some real good depth you got there. I feel bad for Kolb hes going to get killed this year.

As I have said in previous posts, The offensive line is the key to Kolb's success. A not so mobile quarterback, such as Kolb, will have problems. I still do not see a playoff spot in the near future.

Most important attribute that an O-line must have...cohesiveness. Not happening.

First week of training camp and the season is over already. Classic philly fans.

A center who can't snap the ball...that's pretty funny.

No O-line draftees or FAs, although anyone could see we needed at least 2. This is definitely a rebuilding process, and although Reid doesn't say it, I say he's already looking 3,4 years down the road from now.

Thank god the Eagles have Jean Gilles and Nick Cole who have played in playoff games and are some pretty good backups. The Good thing here is the Eagles have alot of depth and even though it may be a mess, the Eagles will not give up alot of sacks this year because everyone will be healthy by the season opener except for Jamaal Jackson who I think is really going to try to rehab to be there when the eagles play the packers.

Reid sets up his excuse. No one wants to hear Donovan never had receivers. In 5 years no one will want to hear Kolb didn't have an "O" line. With the "D" lines in the NFC East he better start getting concerned. REID MUST GO!!!

dansdigs, I agree the fans can be brutal but Reid goes into every year with gapping holes. And he won the SB for Philly in what year??? Sorry it's time for him to go.

This is the main reason why the Eagles will not compete for anything except last place in their division. Reid's neglect of the o-line problem in the off season is a monumental blunder.

Seems like Cole is better off as a OG, He missed too many snaps in the games against the Cowgirls last year and doesn't seem to have improved since then. I was really hoping that McGlynn or Shipley would of been able to wrest the job from Cole.

Andy Reid is not going anywhere guys and you are crazy if you want him to go. Reid has did nothing but win in his 12 years here as the coach of the eagles and how many coaches in the NFL do you see who have been around for 12 years and continue to win. Nobody like andy reid who will bring philly that superbowl this year and everybody will be saying he did the right job by making Kolb the quaterback. He is not going anywhere and may not until he retires as the head coach of the philadelphia eagles.

12 picks, 2 used on receivers and 1 on a TE on a team loaded at that position. Do you think there was even a glimmer of thought in drafting OLine help, like the LT from Maryland that went to Oakland in the "4th round". No, not on a team that had problems at center, and RG with Andrews, and King Dunlap as the main stop gap. No there was no need there. Just ask Andy. Oh, you can't. He doesn't see, hear or speak no evil; its called Denial. One of the hallmarks of his MO over the past 11-years. Ask McNabb when he begged for offensive weapons, when Andy stayed with TE Smith for 5-years who was never going to catch a pass, when the Eagles had no real Fullback until they got Weaver, etc. Don't worry, Andy knows best?!
