The New Danger

By: Spencer Ackerman Wednesday July 21, 2010 8:00 pm

What happened today? Over at Danger Room, that is?

Couple things. We looked at the weekend’s U.S.-South Korea naval/air exercise in the East Sea/Sea of Japan. Checked out the Air Force’s solicitation for an intelligent robotic cargo pallet. Examined the intersection of drone strikes and the CIA’s new top operations official. And reported on the arrest of a 20-year old Virginia student for material support to al-Shebaab.

So it goes. More tomorrow.

Last Night At The Press Club

By: Spencer Ackerman Wednesday July 21, 2010 6:27 pm

I wasn’t able to make it, but Nick Baumann of Mother Jones was, and here’s his writeup of Carol Rosenberg (et al)’s discussion of the GTMO ground rules for reporters.

David Schulz, who represents the Miami Herald, the Associated Press, Dow Jones, the New York Times, Reuters, and the Washington Post, said he was “hopeful” that the media companies could work out their differences with the Defense Department in a meeting scheduled for next week. But, he said, “some press organizations are at the point where they’ve kind of reached the end of the line” in terms of patience with the restrictions imposed on reporting from the detention camp.

Four Generations Are Not Enough!

By: Spencer Ackerman Wednesday July 21, 2010 1:14 pm

According to David Axe, a handbook on Fifth-Generation Warfare is currently available, and he wrote a chapter on Somalia & Piracy. How does it differ from Fourth-Generation Warfare? I’ll have to read the book to learn. I’ve tended to stay out of these debates, but they’re interesting me more and more.

Because Eli Lake Has Been Goading Me, At Least Implicitly

Somehow we haven’t quite come up with the perfect literary device to meld James Clapper into the Boot Camp Clik, but by the time he becomes the next Director of National Intelligence, we’ll have figured it out. Get used to this video. I’ll be posting it a lot.

Bottlenecks to Aid To Pakistan

By: Spencer Ackerman Wednesday July 21, 2010 9:01 am

This Mosharraf Zaidi piece will make you smarter. What’s up with the Pakistani bureaucracy?

The problem with Pakistani government today is that it doesn’t enjoy the competent stability it once used to through the bureaucracy. Today’s Pakistan’s bureaucracy, while made up of individually brilliant officers, is a collection of inward-looking dinosaurs that cannot see beyond their [...]
