Leaked Luntz Poll: Majority of Americans don’t support Israeli flotilla raid.

Via Didi Remez (whose Coteret blog has become an indispensable resource for progressives on Israel-Palestine issues), Israel’s Channel Ten TV News was leaked a memo on a Frank Luntz poll commissioned by the right-wing propaganda outfit The Israel Project analyzing the effectiveness of the Israeli government’s public diplomacy efforts around the Gaza flotilla raid.

A summary of the findings:

1. 56% of Americans agree with the claim that there is a humanitarian crisis in Gaza;
2. 43% of Americans agree with the claim that people in Gaza are starving;
3. 34% of Americans support the Israeli operation against the Flotilla;
4. 20% of Americans “felt support” for Israel following announcement of easing of Gaza closure.

Consider these numbers against the fact that 84 Senators and 298 Representatives — 71% of the U.S. Congress — signed an AIPAC-backed letter supporting the flotilla raid. The Israel Project has worked with Luntz before, and gotten in trouble for it. Last year, columnist Doug Bloomfield obtained a copy of the group’s “Global Language Dictionary,” developed in conjunction with Luntz, which advocated equating an end to illegal Israeli settlement building with “ethnic cleansing” against Jews. Last December, journalist Spencer Ackerman also discovered that The Israel Project was shopping around an anti-Iran petition loaded up with false signatures.

    Well, I’m dead sure we’ll hear about how “the vast majority” of Americans support Israel’s actions against the starving people of Gaza.

    Only in Luntzland does 34% constitute “the vast majority.”

    That 34% number shows up a lot these days, usually seems to have something to do with either the rate of mental insufficiency or Republicans favoring or disfavoring something. If there’s a difference.

  24. calilama says:

    a bit disapointed in the tonality of Think Progress and the banality of vonludwig…it is insulting to Progressives (at least this Progressive) to be channeled into a brand of lock step ideology that evidences little reflection

    Think Progress has stated more than once that all Progressives should (must) be outraged at Israel and that they are the real terrorists in the Middle East…likewise you get the impression that only a knuckle dragging neocon could support Israel when miscreants show up supporting Israel as part of the right wing “israel must exist so jesus can return to earth” idiocy.

    The truth is that a Progressive committed to social and economic justice would be hard pressed to support Hamas and justify their genocide of Jews clearly spelled out in their Charter…that is a difficult starting point for me…conversely many of the policies of Israels current government are just ill conceived….but to suggest Israel is an illegitimate terrorist state is so over the top that it just reaks of anti semitism.

    There is a two state solution that insures the right of both the Palestinian and Israeli people to live side by side in peace..Israel wil need to make compromises including the absolute cessation of settlements and making Jerusalem an international city…Hamas will need to recognize the right of Israel to exist and cease its state sponsored brainwashing of its children with Saturday morning anti semitic cartoons (jon stewart did a great feature on this)..the rest of the arab world has a chance to jump in an MODERNIZE as part of this process…most arab states are 10th century human rights disasters….jordon is a monarchy with no dissent…still beheading women in saudi arabia…but progress is being made…

    theres lots of bad religion out there…hamas style islam and batshit crazy orthodox jews….it needs to be rolled back…

    progressives should stop the witch hunt and throw their collective weight and intellect into supporting barack in achieving a two state solution..it starts with an honest assessment of the facts…there was a blockade, potentially overreaching, because 10,000 rockets were launched into a soverign state..it is justifiable under international law (see Professor dershowitz’s writings on this issue)…that begs the question of whether its working towards a solution…

    and one more point…we give israel a ton of foreign aid…we give an equal amount to egypt and jordon..it is the cost of brokering peace between those nations…not an international jewish conspiracy…also somebody should shoot frank luntz (not literally just figuratively)he is an amazing tool for ignorance

    ok i feel better…

    Have been suprised considering the poor condition of things that it was the loudest celebration all week before the 4th and yesterday was like a world war, all day and all night…

    I find it very odd and terrabley sad so many feel it’s alright to give Israel a pass to murder their neighbors and continue to take our tax money and bombs to do so..I feel the same way about our government and their further escilation of illegal undeclared wars that are sucking the very life out of our country..102 of our own were killed last month in Afghan…It do’s not appear it will end in my life time either…

    President Obama and our administration should have condemed Israels terrorest attack on the flotilla but he and they did not…There in lies the huge rub against the rest of the world and a big reason why we are not gaining any ground or integrety..Seems to me our dumbass actions are the cause “why they hate us”..Instead of standing up for what is right we continue with what is wrong…We should not support or fund illegal wars, it is our downfall..Looks like we are the United states of Israel to the rest of the world and commiting and defending cold blooded murder is never the solution for peace…

    As long as our Gov. is keeping so many of the previous war whores and adding a few more we will be on this terrible down hill run….Peace. Blessings & Justice is a better route to take..

    This is one poll among many that indicates most people are actually on the “liberal” side — they believe Israel needs to be reined in; they see the hardships inflicted;
    most people like the idea of expanded health care for all; most people don’t think Obama is responsible for cleaning up the Gulf;
    ost people think corporations are too cozy with lawmakers; most people think Congress is paid off by lobbyists;
    most people think we never should have gone to Iraq and want us to leave ASAP;
    most people approve of our getting out of Afghanistan also ASAP;
    most people think Bush started this recession and Obama is trying to fix it;
    and most people like Obama and think he is doing his best to govern the nation with a dysfunctional congress.

    Not until Today…

    JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel dropped its long-standing restrictions on allowing consumer goods into the Gaza Strip on MONDAY but retained limits on desperately needed construction materials, redefining the rules of its heavily criticized Gaza embargo on the eve of the Israeli prime minister’s TRIP to the White House.

    The new rules, which come in response to an international OUTCRY following a deadly Israeli raid on a blockade-busting protest flotilla, should bring some relief to Gaza’s 1.5 million people.

    I’m guessing that International Pressure, including from America, actually Worked in this case.

    How do’s this go now, let me remember…A few years ago Lebanon was throwing rocks and inefectual rockets at the great state of Israel so Israel marches over using American funded war supplies and bombs Lebanon..If I remember correctly some where in the neighborhood of 2000 innocent men, women and children are killed on the Lebanon side and 100 Israels…

    March forward to Palestine, over a year ago over 1600 mostly women and children are killed and phospherious along with bombs is used to level that area and maybe 9 Israels are killed during their raid..After which a total block aid of water,electricity, food and medical supplies has existed…

    A few weeks ago a fotilla is attacted and revenge for the nine is carried out on a peaceful mission…9 people in mob exacution style on a ship carring supplies from Turkey,in peace is attacted and no Israels lost their life, a few were wounded…This kind of shit has the same mentalety our own gov. has had on Iraq, Afghan, etal…

    As long as we tolerate and support this it will continue, forever…Dreadful thought that one country screams “we have a right to exist” all the while murdering others to prove their point and causing its citizens to exist no more. forever….Peace, Blessings & Justice is the answer, not war..

    The term “anti-Semite” used to have meaning. It once meant someone who held a negative opinion or stereotype of Jews. It now means one who Jews do not like. Thanks for pulling that up. The only one that seems to be missing is Cuba in April 1961, the Bay of Pigs. That one is admittedly tempered, though, since it was a sanctioned mercenary landing force incident from which JFK wisely shut off US military involvement. Had Nixon prevailed in 1960, that would certainly have wound up as yet one more aggressive and unwarranted war by the US rather than a ‘terrorist’ overthrow of a sovereign government.

    -Insidious Prophet

    Glenn Beck is, amongst many other bi-polar things, a very culturally divided person. He’s an extremist in the literal sort of the word. For him there can never be a middle ground, everything must be black and white, all or nothing. I doubt he can even trust himself to gamble anymore, even to lose money on a blackjack table wounds him inside. If he doesn’t dominate every aspect of the contest it’s a loss for him. The gods did a very bad thing when they cast fate the way the did for that man. I’m not going to be a bleeding heart here and say that he’s only the way he is because of his rough life and mental disorders, but let’s keep things fair; he’s not a very stable person and probably sees nothing wrong with praising a Nazi sympathiser so long as he agrees with him on the one part that more important. He simply doesn’t understand how other people might find that odd- in his own mind he can separate the two aspects like oil and water.

    And how he just praised a ’socalist’ as well- (yes he has called the Nazis socialists on occasion.) he honestly doesn’t see lying through his teeth as being dishonest in the lest, not if it’s for the ‘greater good.’

    Despite his millions of dollars and his followers the man has his own built in personal torture chamber. Remember that prediction I made that one day he tops himself? It stands.

    Glenn Beck is a very very insecure person who knows deep inside that he is not good enough, not smart enough and not even up to his own moral standards as a person. His castle is a fragile house of cards. One day a guilles child will reach out and pluck away that bottom card while the fast talking huckster is in mid rant.
    Then he will go back to the bottle, and hard, and it will be eternal.

    I feel bad for him personally, but he probably was a influencing factor in the next Timothy McVeigh so I can’t feel that bad.

    I know, I know. It’s like asking a progressive, “How many times does a progressive vomit when he sees the American flag waving on Independence Day?” It’s hard to answer.

    Well, the wingnuts are the most cagey paranoid on the planet about even the most trivial information about themselves so we never have any idea of what we’re dealing with. I’m a Gen-X. So, why is it so hard for the GOP leadership to act on their frequent promise of ridding the country of ne’er-do-well entitlement junkies? They have the support of the Founding Fathers and 650% of the American people; what’s wrong with them?

    And in response to this There can be no revolution from those that are entitled because they don’t have the wherewithall to enact such an uprising.

    There are many many historical examples of a Marxist style popular uprising. Communism is a very popular ideologoy in the truelly repressed. Thats one more reason why I scoff at the ‘Obama/Democrats are commies” non-sense. If it really was as bad as they chicken-little Fox News crybabies make it out to be you’d have daily bread riots.

    right, and no wonder he takes your “research” and swallows it…He’s already admitted to not fact-checking…

    but hey, it looks like it was the other way around…After all I caught you using talking points from Beck that were 4 days old…and Factcheck debunked your god’s talking points…

    But…there’s more…and unless one could obtain the records of when Soros exitted his hedgefund short position, (I could name the date), then it’s very hard to prove. But I knew what was going on….yes, The Incompetent One was engaged in illegal stock market manipulation the first 3 weeks of his office…

    why not just come out and say Obama faked his getting a JD, manipulated the Harvard Law Schools admissions process, and then manipulated the University of Chicago into giving him a Senior Lecturer position, but it’s very hard to prove…unless we had access to his records…

    in fact, I have secret knowledge that Obama secretly killed a teacher and then performed a magical spell to gain its spirit as a familiar…and I have secret knowledge that he invoked the Supreme Angels to drain the blood out of someone by performing an act of sympathetic magic, using a frog…and I also have secret knowledge that he tried to do a healing ritual by claiming that he was Abrasax…

    Ahh…err? That’s an answer?

    Look, conservatives held court from 1994 through 2006 and made no sincere effort to bring down the programs they detest……except when there was a Democrat in the White House.

    Obama, in less than ONE year, managed to pass a health care bill that had known a century of failure under a mixed bag of leadership.

    Are you telling me that Democrats are better at doing what they’re elected to do and republicans are lying to their constituents? It seems that way. You guys can’t get anything done when you have all the power and when you are “out”, you blame your impotence on Democrats.

    Americans should know – and I will work to inform them – that republicans have no intention of making good on any of the promises they make. Their promises have nothing to do with their real agenda.

    They are liars.

    Democrats, for ill or for better, do tend to keep at least some of their promises to their constituents.

    The choice is clear.

    I assume that you agree with the author, but even if you don’t, even if you just threw that into the mix for people to consider, good form would dictate that you credit the author out front, at the beginning, not at the end. Some folks might prefer to skip it; other’s might like you to include a link so they can assure themselves that your “block quote” of an entire column accurately reflects the views of the actual writer and that you haven’t added a little something or filtered out something else. Only your own writings do not need attribution at the beginning, since your screen name is already there, yanno?

  580. SP Biloxi says:

    GOP Says Boner’s Gaffes Are All Part of the Plan to Retake House

    It’s hard to believe the Republicans are serious when they say that several days of bad publicity are all part of the plan, but it was the theme echoed by staffers with whom TPM spoke. They think Boehner is being aggressive — though inartful — on purpose and has elevated himself to merit an Obama swat-down.

    A Republican aide speaking on background told TPM that rank-and-file members feel like Boehner “has taken the fight” to the Democrats, forcing them to focus on him. Until this week, Boehner had commanded little of Obama’s attention.

    “It raises John Boehner to the president’s level, and whether they meant to do it or not, they have,” the GOP aide said in an interview. The aide (who does not work for Boehner) said Boehner’s team has decided he won’t just take lumps and move on if the Democrats jump on something he said. The new strategy is to “start throwing some of your own back,” using the media attention to highlight the party’s messages for the fall elections.

    The aide’s rosy outlook on November is a factor in his forgiveness for Boehner, sure, but there’s no doubt that recent events have raised the minority leader’s national visibility. (As we wrote last spring, Speaker Nancy Pelosi is one of the only widely-known members of Congressional leadership.)

    “Speaker Boehner is a real possibility,” the aide said

    http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/07/speaker-boehner-gop-leader-steps-it-up-in-hopes-of-winning-house.php?ref=fpb

    And there you have it. The GOP lost their mind. And Boner’s whiskey drinks has been spiked at the local tavern if Boner’s thinks that his gaffes and stupid statements will win him the Speaker of House.

    The conservatives have already ruined Obama’s attempt to destroy the 2nd amendment.

    When has Obama done anything in regards to the 2nd Amendment? It was McDonald vs. the City of Chicago, not McDonald vs The United States of America. Last I checked, Obama wasn’t working on the City of Chicago council, nor did he have anything to do with the original law being passed.

    BTW you might want to recheck your facts (snerk! I’m laughing hard @ that!), all Chicago did was revamp the wording 4 days and enact it again.

    Obama was in college in 1982, unless you wanna add another wingnut conspiracy (which wouldn’t surprise me at this point) that his “missing college years” were in fact spent on the Chicago City Council making ordinances against handguns.

    The boost comes as no surprise. Postmaster General John Potter said March 2 that a rate increase would be necessary for the agency, which does not receive tax funds for its operations.

    The current 44-cent first-class rate took effect May 11, 2009

    Under the law, the post office is generally limited to increases no more than the rate of inflation — 0.9 percent for the year ended in May.

    With an increase of rates, there will be more layoffs and early retirement packages. Sigh.. I bid you adieu. Good night, TP peeps.

    Still looking for the day when a progressive can win a debate with motomark.
    ————————————————————–

    I’d like to see motormoron actually win a debate with ANYONE, much less a progressive. He couldn’t win a debate with a seventh grader, for chrissake. Lies and misplaced innuendo are hardly useful tools in debating.

    It is cut to watch the TP terrorist gang get their asses handed to them every time they show up here.

    Speaking of terrorists, how are your goals any different, Robopoo, than, say the goals of Al Qaeda? They apparently want to destroy the United States just as you and your fellow that hang out here want to do. So, what IS the difference, really? Not much, I’m sayin’.

    439 Kitty-please…try to keep up…

    Let’s go over this a little slower….OK?

    1)Soros was shorting the US stock market…

    The market lost 40% of its value between October 9, 2007 and October 9, 2008. Between October 3, 2008 and October 9, 2008, the Dow lost nearly 2,000 points. Soros was shorting the market at that time as he had been throughout 2008. Funny thing is, so was everybody else.

    2)Obama was manipulating the markets, driving them down another 34% after he was inaugurated.

    WRONG. The Dow opened at 8279.63 on Inauguration Day and fell to its low of 6547.05 on March 9th, 2009 – a fall of 21%, not 34%. More importantly, by what mechanism does a president force the market in one way or another? Do all presidents have access to that mechanism (assuming there is one)? Did George Bush use that mechanism throughout 2008 while the Dow was losing historically astronomical value? Did George Bush force the oil bubble of the summer of 2008 as pay-back to all his oil cronies?

    3)Soros made billions of dollars out of America’s 401K’s.

    Are you sure about that? Have you ANY proof? Soros is well known for making $1 billion in one day in 1992 by shorting the British Pound because that’s what Soros does; he’s a currency speculator more than anything else. In fact, Soros began betting against the dollar in April 2009, believing the dollar would soon be replaced as the reserve currency by some arcane IMF denomination. That didn’t happen.

    Since you failed to answer my question vis-a-vis GOP impotence, maybe you can answer some of my questions regarding your claims.

    My guess is, you can’t.

  618. Frugalchariot says:

    For the benefit of the terrorists here, I’m going to lay out one more time the nuts and bolts of the Progressive agenda for America, as first described by Franklin Roosevelt in his State of the Union address, 1944:

    It is our duty now to begin to lay the plans and determine the strategy for the winning of a lasting peace and the establishment of an American standard of living higher than ever before known. We cannot be content, no matter how high that general standard of living may be, if some fraction of our people—whether it be one-third or one-fifth or one-tenth—is ill-fed, ill-clothed, ill-housed, and insecure.

    This Republic had its beginning, and grew to its present strength, under the protection of certain inalienable political rights—among them the right of free speech, free press, free worship, trial by jury, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. They were our rights to life and liberty.

    As our nation has grown in size and stature, however—as our industrial economy expanded—these political rights proved inadequate to assure us equality in the pursuit of happiness.

    We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. “Necessitous men are not free men.”[2] People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.

    In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed.

    Among these are:

    The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;

    The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

    The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

    The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

    The right of every family to a decent home;

    The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

    The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

    The right to a good education.

    All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.

    For unless there is security here at home there cannot be lasting peace in the world.

    It’s taking us longer than it should, mostly because of fascist resistance, but make no mistake: we’ll get there!

    I read, just moments ago, that Israeli soldiers have been indicted for their actions in a recent Palatine raid. Among other charges, some have been accused of using Palestinians as human shields. Among other things, that’s a cowardly act. Where would Israel be without the US? I mind reels at the prospects.

    Let us try and get this answered again by the progressives.

    “Has the Teachers Union received or in the process of receiving a “Bail Out” of Tax dollars from hard working Americans?”

    Once again I remind our truth challenged progressive communist that this is a Yes or No answer only. After more then 200 post since I originally asked this basic question…none of you have answered it yet.

    Please do not include excuses about how they misspent their union funds as it only muddies the water so to speak and diverts from answering the actual question.

    Feel free to grade for grammar and spelling errors… like I really give a shet.

    Waiting.

    First off I call BS because it’s doubtful you can read.

    Second…who so called indicted them

    Third…don’t Palestinians use Children as human shields…thereby making them most heinous and cowardly.

    Here ya go, RC. Gaza Troop Disciplinary Action; it isn’t some agit-prop organization that is saying it. It’s AP reporting an Israeli Defense Forces announcement.

    And yes, at least one Israeli soldier may be disciplined for using civilians, Palestinean civilians, as a human shield.

    Oh, do you subscribe to the always and ever ethical, moral and legal Israeli military delusion? They’re human, RC; fracking get over your AIPAC induced lunacy.

    Then he will go back to the bottle, and hard, and it will be eternal.
