Angle Calls Unemployed ‘Spoiled,’ Says Senators Are ‘Not In Business Of Creating Jobs’

Sharron Angle, the GOP Nevada Senate candidate and tea party favorite, has had a rough start to her general campaign to unseat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV). After facing criticism for wanting to privatize Social Security, Angle tried to “weasel her way out by calling it “personalization.” An Angle aide called a reporter an “idiot” for asking about Angle’s suggestion that “Second Amendment remedies” might be used to soothe voter anger.

Adding to her troubles, Angle said in an interview with a local Nevada affiliate that the country’s unemployed are “spoiled“:

ANGLE: You can make more money on unemployment then you can going down and getting one of those jobs that is an honest job, but [] doesn’t pay as much. And so that’s what’s happened to us is that we have put in so much entitlement into our government that we really have spoiled our citizenry and said “you don’t want the jobs that are available.”

And in a campaign appearance last month, the GOP Senate nominee said she has no interest in bringing jobs to her state:

ANGLE: As your U.S. Senator, I’m not in the business of creating jobs. … People ask me, “What are you gonna do to develop jobs in your state?” Well that’s not my job as a U.S. Senator — to bring industry to this state. That’s the lieutenant governor’s job, that’s your state senator’s and assemblymen’s job, that’s your secretary of state’s job to make a climate here in the state that says, “Y’all come.”

Watch it:

Yet despite her claim that a senator’s job is not to bring jobs to the state, Angle attacked Reid specifically for not bringing jobs to Nevada. From an interview interview with Human Events this week:

HUMAN EVENTS: What are the three reasons why Harry Reid needs to go come November?

ANGLE: Fourteen percent unemployment in the state of Nevada, the highest foreclosure rate in the nation in Nevada, and the highest rate of bankruptcy in Nevada. That is where people have really held Harry Reid accountable because Harry Reid doesn’t care about their jobs. He doesn’t care that they are having trouble staying in their homes and that’s why Harry Reid needs to be fired.

Angle also echoed that same sentiment in an interview with Sean Hannity last week. “We have 14 percent unemployment,” she said. “We’re tired of it. And it’s time to say Harry Reid, you’ve failed.”

Perhaps most outlandish is Angle’s most recent Web ad, attacking Reid for challenging her when he should be focusing on problems like, you guessed it, unemployment. (HT: Little Green Footballs.)

Angle is not going to be able to sell her line in Las Vegas because a lot of people were laid off at the hotels and casinos. These people make minimum wage and would be happy to take any job because the wages would exceed unemployment. The only person who should be unemployed is Angle. And she should stay unemployed after the election.

Since she’s busy defining what a Senator doesn’t do, perhaps someone could have asked Ms Angle exactly what the job of a Senator was. She appears to have exactly the same grasp of the job she’s asking for as Sarah Palin did about VP.

Why is it that the Repubs and tea bag wearers think that they should be the only ones receiving Government checks? Just listen to Angle complain while at the same time she wants to receive health care paid for by the taxpayers and a salary paid for by the taxpayers. Angle wants to dismantle Social Security which won’t effect her if she becomes a Senator because she will then be eligible for a Government pension. Auk! Nothing but thieves.

Other than enrolling prisoners in Scientology programs and perhaps killing Harry Reid however I can’t think of anything she actually wants to enact. What is her slogan? “Elect me so I can dismantle the government”? Or is it “Get back to work you lazy bums so I can collect my government check”?

  26. Jackieprep says:

She wouldn’t be saying that if the Senate seat came without taxpayers money for her salary. Now Angle is about to make more money from bribes that she has ever had in her life. Just think of what she would say if the American people decided not to pay taxes? Life has a way of coming full circle and what you give you get back 7 times. Most of those who gave a tuff talk by hurting millions of Americans seem to end up suffering worse like let’s say Bob Dole. Here’s a fact Angle can bet on ” you come in this world with nothing and you leave it with nothing”, but you will have to answer to your personal book of life.

  27. Smith1 says:

And the Repuke hypocrisy comes shining through.

Angle claims she’s not in the business of creating jobs…that it’s the business of the Lt. Governor and state senators to create jobs. But then, in the same interview, the idiot claims that Sen. Reid is accountable for jobs. And she’s too stupid to realize that she’s just contradicted herself.

Nevada voters, please keep this poisonous Repuke far far far away from the U.S. Senate.

  28. Perry logan says:

This sort of rhetoric reflects blatant class warfare.

Like most conservatives and libertarians in America, Angle completely identifies with the merchant class. She believes the business class are the super-race who should be in charge of everything. The first comment to this thread (which was voted down) expresses a suspicion of welfare which is also quintessentially merchant-class.

That’s the recent history of America in a nutshell. In the guise of the Republican Revolution, the merchant class has been waging war on the other classes of American society and–to give credit where it’s due–have been making out like bandits. They’re hoping to hell no one figures out what’s going on, but are prone to revealing utterances.

  29. Wiz says:

She is right about not being in the business of creating jobs because she will never be a US Senator. Harry Reid must be sleeping well, waiting for fall to unload on her radical agenda.

Hell, Angie is not in the business of working for her constituents. They need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, stop depending on government to solve their problems. The amount of your unemployment is based on a % of what you were earning and paying in before you became unemployed. I have no doubt that there are some who have little enough ambition that they’re willing to live off the largess that unemployment or welfare benefits provide.

The idea, however, that those people are the norm, and that their freeloading should dictate policy is right-wing delusion that feeds a very, very ugly mindset.

Does Sharon Angle really think that those millions who lost their jobs in 2008 suddenly got lazy, or realized “hey, I can live the good life if I just sit at home and collect unemployment”?

It sure sounds like she does.

  43. Smith1 says:

ANGLE: You can make more money on unemployment then you can going down and getting one of those jobs that is an honest job, but [] doesn’t pay as much.

Angle is typical of the Republicans who want to portray the issue as if there is no real economic crisis, but that people are voluntarily unemployed or want to stay on unemployment. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Republicans know the economic data, but they are selling the perception that there is no problem. Selling a perception is what the Republicans are all about on most issues. The facts are irrelevant because perception is everything.

Rand Paul flips, seeks money from bailout senators

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kentucky Republican senatorial candidate Rand Paul is seeking fundraising help from GOP lawmakers who voted for the massive 2008 financial bailout, flip-flopping on a campaign promise to shun those lawmakers.

The libertarian-leaning Paul, who condemns taxpayer-backed bailouts of the private sector, will benefit from a Thursday night fundraiser at the National Republican Senatorial Committee in Washington, D.C. Nine of 12 GOP senators listed on invitation voted for the $700 billion bank bailout in 2008. Tickets to the event went for $1,000 per person, with sponsorships up to $5,000 per group.

During the primary, Paul pledged not to accept contributions from any senator who had voted for the financial bailout.

That promise was included on his campaign website at the time but has since been removed.

Once again, a check of the indisputable facts, give lie to a right winger’s words.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the April 2010 (the latest month for which this data is available), Job Opening and Labor Turnover Survey, there were 3,078,000 jobs open. According to the BLS’s Current Population Survey, in April 2010, there were 15,260,000 people officially counted as unemployed. Therefore, there were 4.95 people officially counted as unemployed for every available job opening! That is, there are not enough jobs for everyone wanting to work, never mind at a living wage! This is known as a “jobs deficit.” If one adds one half the people working part time because they can’t find full time work or (1/2 of 9,152,000) 4,576,000 and all of the marginally attached (want work, looked for work in the past year, but not the last four weeks for some reason) 2,432,000 more unemployed, but not officially counted as such, the number of unemployed per job opening rises to 7.234!!!

In fact, since the BLS started calculating the JOLT survey in 2001, there hasn’t been one month where the number of jobs open was greater than the official number of unemployed. Therefore, it isn’t true that there are enough jobs for everyone wanting to work and there hasn’t been since 2001, never mind at a living wage!

These perennially unemployed are what one economist called the reserve army of the unemployed.

I have met both sides of the jobless while on a summer job at a clothing warehouse in northern New Jersey as a picker. There are two classes of the unemployed. My personal set was that of a college student looking for funds, any funds to work my way forward to paying for a degree.

I started on the job as a trainee with no trainer. I was given an order with demands to fill it and let out on the floor. I managed to pick about 300 items on that first day. By the fifth day, I was up to 1800 items. The next week, on Monday, they gave me a Macy’s order for 24,000 items. I filled it in less then 6 hours and the error rate was zero percent.

By the third week, I was told to train in-coming new hires as Christmas orders were starting to come (in June). I trained about 20 people over that summer. I saw the full range of people you might see trying for entry level manual labor jobs. The range was from the alky who tried to sleep it off in the to-be-cleaned bin whenever he had an opportunity to the person who was striving for my job.

The guy who landed it was executive manager of the operation five years later. The alky was on the streets before the summer was out.

In order to receive unemployment higher than the average minimum-type wage, the person getting it would have been making pretty good money to start with. And its natural that such a person might at first keep looking for what s/he considers a ‘good’ job: one that pays the bills accrued when the person was employed. Eventually s/he will apply for a lower-paying job … and probably be turned down because she is “over qualified”.

happend to my sister. From Tech Writer (has an MA in writing) making $75K, she applied for secretary-receptionist making $15 per hour, NO benefits. Turned down because she was overqualified. Tho I suspect her age (57) was a factor.

Their loss: she can turn her hand to any task, she was a Sargent in the Army fixing helicopter rotors & engines, worked for the phone company installing computer equipment (LANS), docent in a museum, security guard, you name it. And she has considerable personal charm, very useful in a receptionist. But they hired a young bimbo.

•A powerful school employee union that militantly defends the exceptional pay, benefits and job security it has won for its members.

•A powerful government employee union that does the same for its members.

•A tax system that aggressively redistributes income from businesses and the wealthy to the poor and to government bureaucracies.

Would this be a shining city on a hill, exciting the admiration of all? We don’t have to guess, because there is such a city right here in our state: Detroit

  146. ForTruth says:

Odds are she won’t be elected. So that’s good.

She didn’t check the amount of unemployment a person can get in AZ. The second lowest in the nation.

However, folks like her have become emboldened to come out and say what the ruling class really think. Which is very helpful for the unwashed masses on my skin.

In my travels around the blogs and news sites, I find the top 10% likes to focus on how they pay 62% of Federal Income taxes, “we pay for you so you should be thanking us”.

Angle is forgetting that the rich pay entitlements as an “insurance policy” so the masses won’t form their own system, to counter the current system. It’s in their best interest to keep the masses pacified. They know it. Her rhetoric is just crap to appeal to her “crowd”. Or, she really is that dumb.

Maybe the pacification payments are becoming too burdensome, and have interfered with the ruling class’ agenda of world domination?

AEI and Heritage fail to take into account the other forms of Federal tax revenue ie: fuel, tobacco taxes. The top 10% cannot match or exceed what the masses pay in those Federal taxes.

Sharron is also forgetting that as a member of the ruling class, she should pay more for governmental functions. Like defense. The rich have more to defend, and have control over how defense is administered and carried out. Sharron also seems to be overlooking how law enforcement, courts, infrastructure, commerce, interstates, air travel, energy, and education are more useful to the rich. As they have access to the best of these government functions, not to mention complete control over them.

This is about power. Sharron and the rest of the pasty white ruling class is worried about the unwashed masses having any power in the functions of the government.

We can talk tax statistics and money all day. Those things are symbols for power, security, access to resources, and freedom.

The entitlements are bare minimum payments to keep people from rising up. They certainly don’t spoil people. At least not here in AZ. The most a laid off worker in AZ can collect is $240 a week. Yeah, that sure is spoiling people. And I believe it only goes for 6 mos.

Regarding Social Security. The more money you make, the more you get back.

Sharron would be best off with a mouth full of my schlong.

The amount of your unemployment is based on a % of what you were earning and paying in before you became unemployed. It depends on the state, but isn’t it about 30% of what you were making before? If you don’t get a new job because unemployment is higher—then that would mean an extreme drop in new job wages.
Can someone help me out here?

Yes, it is based on a percentage of your previous income. For instance, I live in Indiana and the Department of Workforce Development’s site says:

“Benefits are based upon total wages earned during your base period. The minimum amount paid per week in Indiana is $50, while the maximum is currently $390. The highest quarter of your base period determines your weekly amount. A claimant would need at least $9,250 in their highest quarter to receive $390 per week.”

You don’t get rich off unemployment and you have to have worked before in order to get it. Where I work we laid off one of the shifts in our plant. We still haven’t gone back to four shifts. We used to run four shifts, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are now running 3 shifts, Monday – Friday. I’m not sure where people like Sharon Angle thinks someone on unemployment is going to find a job paying a living wage. Job hunting is a full-time job. I don’t think these people are lazy, they just don’t want to take a pay cut to work some $8/hr. job with no benefits.

So when you say something today, and then you say the 180 degree opposite a week from now, WE’RE GOING TO NOTICE, because we’ll still be able to see what you said today when we look again next week.

I know this seems like an extremely simplistic concept. I’m just giving a helpful FYI here because NONE OF YOU EVER, EVER, EVER seem to be able to comprehend this extremely elementary idea that even your average three-year-old easily grasps.
