As Jimmy Kimmel and his crew revved up for a Monday night taping, things went a bit sideways: the power went out, meaning no taping could occur. Kimmel was reportedly annoyed, but the show turned out to be a viral hit since they used a Macbook's webcam as the sole camera used in interviews with Seth Rogen and John Henson. more ›

Last week's E3 was like the Nerd Prom, and before the Lakeshow dominated the Staples Center, Activision put on a mind-blowing 3-hour concert spectacle (complete with a stripper pole and fireworks). But things weren't all pure geekery and pyrotechnics; there was time for a good ol' dance-off. Mind you, it was between Plants and Zombies... more ›

If you’re wondering what happens when an AWOL soldier, his agoraphobic sister, a strung-out artist/socialite, and a life-sized voodoo doll combine, look no further. The Fringe (and world) premiere of L.A.-based Australian playwright Sarah Doyle's Shiny White Diamonds borrows elements from the theater of the absurd to boldly and frankly explore the nature of reality and sanity while maintaining a caustic wit. more ›

Charo to Lead PETA Rally Against Bullfighting on Olvera Street

charo-peta-video.jpg
Vivacious entertainer Charo will be the star attraction at a rally to be held tomorrow at noon on historic Olvera Street. The Spanish native will be there on behalf of PETA on the eve of Mexico's highly promoted bullfighting festival to raise awareness about the perils of bullfighting, and to air her new anti-bullfighting PETA video. Charo was raised going to bullfights with her father, however she has come to see how the entertainment is actually cruelty. "This animal doesn't need to be punished, just to entertain yourself and sacrifice this beautiful animal," says Charo. "Just to spend 45 minutes enjoying the death of a living thing is barbaric and has to go."

Remember when your parents refused to grant you permission to go to someone's unchaperoned party or on a Spring Break booze-cation to Cancun? "But everyone's going to do it!" you would exclaim, and they would counter with the old turkey about how unlikely you'd be to follow those same friends off some cliff or famous bridge. more ›

Villaraigosa Ticketgate: District Attorney Launches Inquiry

villaraigosa-ticketgate.jpg The Los Angles District Attorneys Office has begun an inquiry into possible ethics violations made by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Submitted last Thursday, a complaint refers to news articles about free tickets the Mayor accepted -- but did not report -- to 81 events, which included courtside tickets to Lakers games, a seat at the Oscars and to music concerts (Beyoncé, Shakira and Mary J. Blige, to name a few). As for what an inquiry is, D.A. Spokesperson Jane Robinson explained to LAist: "When we receive a complaint of possible wrong doing, we review that; and if we believe there is a criminal misconduct, an investigation will be opened." How long will it take to complete? "However long it takes," she said.

174 Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Plan to Stay Open

med-marijuana-ruling.jpg Of the 187 medical marijuana dispensaries that registered in 2007, 174 have informed L.A. officials they plan to stay open. The notices from dispensaries are part of the process after L.A.'s ordinance on the shops went into effect earlier this month. Under it, some facilities can lawfully stay open, but hundreds of others were deemed illegal and have to close. That, however, hasn't stopped all of them. The famous KFC-turned-dispensary i Palms that was parodied in an episode of "South Park" was served with a warrant by police yesterday and one person was arrested. Of the 174 that plan to stay open, initial review by city officials indicate that under 100 will actually end up being legalized operations.

Listening to Josh Ritter's new album is like reading a satisfying novel. Whether it's a spry tune like "Lark" or the tale of a mummy who falls in love with an archeologist in "The Curse," Ritter's wordplay and melodies reveal new facets upon each listen. That's probably one reason why Stephen King is a fan, and why Paste Magazine included Ritter on their "100 Best Living Songwriters" list. more ›

The Largo at the Coronet hosts a chat with comedy writer David Bickel, who will be talking about his new book CREEPIOSITY: A Hilarious Guide to the Unintentionally Creepy. In his book, Bickel shares a wide variety of normal, yet rather unsettling everyday objects, people and things, including grown men in Boy Scout uniforms, fish with strong resemblances to people and many others. Kevin Pollak, Nick Kroll, Laura Silverman and Gary Valentine will also participate. Starts at 8:00 PM. more ›

Los Angeles will not turn off red light enforcement cameras at 32 intersections this summer. The City Council this morning unanimously voted to extend a contract with Arizona-based American Traffic Solutions for 10 months. When the issue comes up again next year, the Council will have to decide to either keep ATS, find a new vendor -- either based in Arizona or not -- or scrap the program altogether. more ›

Vegan food scored a big win last night on Food Network's Cupcake Wars, thanks to local chef Chloe Coscarelli. Battling round by round against bakers using animal-based ingredients (butter, eggs, and so on) Coscarelli managed to out-score everyone to take top honors in the episode. more ›
