Charo to Lead PETA Rally Against Bullfighting on Olvera Street
Vivacious entertainer Charo will be the star attraction at a rally to be held tomorrow at noon on historic Olvera Street. The Spanish native will be there on behalf of PETA on the eve of Mexico's highly promoted bullfighting festival to raise awareness about the perils of bullfighting, and to air her new anti-bullfighting PETA video. Charo was raised going to bullfights with her father, however she has come to see how the entertainment is actually cruelty. "This animal doesn't need to be punished, just to entertain yourself and sacrifice this beautiful animal," says Charo. "Just to spend 45 minutes enjoying the death of a living thing is barbaric and has to go."
Villaraigosa Ticketgate: District Attorney Launches Inquiry
The Los Angles District Attorneys Office has begun an inquiry into possible ethics violations made by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Submitted last Thursday, a complaint refers to news articles about free tickets the Mayor accepted -- but did not report -- to 81 events, which included courtside tickets to Lakers games, a seat at the Oscars and to music concerts (Beyoncé, Shakira and Mary J. Blige, to name a few). As for what an inquiry is, D.A. Spokesperson Jane Robinson explained to LAist: "When we receive a complaint of possible wrong doing, we review that; and if we believe there is a criminal misconduct, an investigation will be opened." How long will it take to complete? "However long it takes," she said.
174 Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Plan to Stay Open
Of the 187 medical marijuana dispensaries that registered in 2007, 174 have informed L.A. officials they plan to stay open. The notices from dispensaries are part of the process after L.A.'s ordinance on the shops went into effect earlier this month. Under it, some facilities can lawfully stay open, but hundreds of others were deemed illegal and have to close. That, however, hasn't stopped all of them. The famous KFC-turned-dispensary i Palms that was parodied in an episode of "South Park" was served with a warrant by police yesterday and one person was arrested. Of the 174 that plan to stay open, initial review by city officials indicate that under 100 will actually end up being legalized operations.
