Orthodox Women Balancing Fashion and Modesty

The Forward has an interesting report that focuses on how some Orthodox women in Brooklyn neighborhoods are trying to follow the Jewish law of tznius, or modesty, while still dressing fashionably. At the Crown Heights clothing store profiled in the Forward’s video, Frock Swap, high-end designs from the likes of Marc Jacobs and Gucci are for sale. Business is, apparently, brisk.

Some Strides on Street Upgrades Near Pier 6

BERJAYA
Last month the city started putting in street improvements near Pier 6—at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue, Furman Street and Columbia Street/the Brooklyn Greenway—and so far the beginning of a plaza space near the start of the greenway is in evidence (click through to see the DOT’s full plan for the area). It doesn’t seem as though the upgrades are going to make the pedestrian or bike approach under the BQE significantly less harrowing, though perhaps the still-to-come new pedestrian island on Atlantic will do some good. A Few Rental Listings Pop Up for 517 Court Street

BERJAYA
The new building at 517 Court Street, on the corner of 9th Street in Carroll Gardens, must be just about complete, as a few two-bedroom units have been listed from $3,300 to $5,500/month. Unfortunately, there are no interior photos or building details yet. The building has been in the making since 2008. It still looks like there’s a decent amount of work that still needs to be done to the ground floor—where signs are advertising space for new retail—before construction wraps.

Past and Present: The Hotel Granada

BERJAYA

A Look at Brooklyn, then and now.

Few people parking in the lot near BAM realize what kind of building stood where the lot is now, and unless you grew up in Brooklyn, or lived here in the 1970’s and ‘80’s, you may not remember the Hotel Granada, which stood at this site. Perhaps you remember its other name: the notorious Brooklyn Arms Hotel?

The Hotel Granada had a grand beginning, opening in 1927 as one of Downtown Brooklyn’s finer venues, home to its luxurious Forsythia Room, the site of many wedding receptions, Bar Mitzvah’s and other social events. The Granada was used to house visiting ball players when the Dodgers were playing home games. Up until the 1960’s, the hotel retained a grand sort of faded elegance, and in addition to now being a middle class kind of hotel, was home to a number of Pratt students who were billeted there, as part of the Institute’s dorm system. Council OKs Wallabout Historic District

BERJAYA
On Wednesday the City Council voted to approve the Wallabout Historic District, which is comprised of 55 wood and masonry buildings on one block of Vanderbilt Avenue between Myrtle and Park avenues. The homes were constructed during the mid-to-late 19th century and are a mixture of Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and Italianate styles. The LPC voted to approve the district back in July, a move that followed the designation of Wallabout state historic district this March. Patch notes that the homes that make up the Wallabout Historic District “represent one of the largest remaining concentrations of wood-frame houses in the entire city.”

8 Units in Contract After 75 Clinton’s First Open House

The recently launched Brooklyn Heights condo 75 Clinton had its first open house on Sunday, and as of yesterday eight contracts had been signed. So far bigger spaces have been in demand, according to Aaron Lemma, the Corcoran broker heading up sales at the development. Some of the deals have been for units that will be combined to form bigger spaces, and all the sales have been for more than $1,000 a foot. The 74-unit building is supposed to get a temporary certificate of occupancy next week. The shots above show some of the interiors, as well as the terrific view from the roof. The current crop of listings is running from $519,820 for a 553-square-foot studio up to $2,025,000 for a 1,633-square-foot three bedroom.

Progress on Brooklyn Parks: A Roundup

BERJAYA
We’ve got a whole lot of park news on our hands, so here are status updates about the renovation of green spaces around the borough. First up, Walt Whitman Park, pictured, which has been closed during construction of the federal courthouse, was supposed to be open by now, but its partial unveiling has been pushed back to early fall. The Parks Department anticipates Whitman being fully open by next spring. Next up: A renovation of the eastern end of Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene is scheduled to begin at the end of this month, according to CB2 District Manager Rob Perris. Plans to renovate Commodore Barry have been in the works for more than three years. Elsewhere, Crispus Attucks Park, in Bed Stuy, was given $2.5 million by Council Member Al Vann for the renovation of the upper portion of the playground and improved security. Work on the park hasn’t yet started, though. And, finally, a portion of McLaughlin Park, on Jay Street and Tillary, is under construction. When the revamp is finished, it will sport a new playground, benches, game tables, drinking fountains and plantings. (There’s a picture after the jump.) According to the Parks Department sign, it will reopen next spring.

Forest City Still Mulling Modular Design for Atlantic Yards

BERJAYA
Atlantic Yards Report has a comprehensive rundown of the discussion at the latest Atlantic Yards District Service Cabinet meeting, where there was some talk about the first residential tower planned as part of the mega-project. Forest City Ratner employees who were present said a modular design is still being considered for the tower. An executive vice president at the firm, Bob Sanna, said he has a meeting scheduled with a labor rep about the possible modular build, and another Forest City Ratner executive, Jane Marshall, said it wasn’t clear that a modular build would necessarily result in fewer jobs. The executives also said there were other possible benefits to going modular: Construction would be less disruptive to the community and it would be less costly to construct affordable housing. It also sounds like Forest City may be backing down from the claim that it intends to start construction on the tower before the year is out. Marshall said the company hopes to make an announcement about the building before the year is out and have it in construction at the beginning of next year.

Affordable Burg Rental Rising Quickly

Only a few months ago the rental development at Kent and Broadway in Williamsburg, 11 Broadway, was barely starting to show steel. The Clinton Hill brownstone has been immaculately (and rather tastefully) renovated, creating a nice balance of original charm and modern convenience. Condo of the Day: 100 Jay Street, #18H

BERJAYA
This three-bedroom condo at 100 Jay Street just hit the market with an asking price of $1,495,000. Given the high floor, it’s no surprise that the views are impressive and given the young age of the building it’s no surprise that all the finishes still look as good as new. Our only quibble is the size of the living room–it feels a little skinn… More
