BP Faces Backlash From Everyone From Gas Consumers To A Minor League Baseball Team

As oil keeps pouring into the Gulf of Mexico, oil giant BP continues to see its reputation dragged further and further through the muck. Across the Gulf Coast, anti-BP signs and calls for help are popping up. On Friday, people gathered at BP’s DC headquarters to protest the corporation and present a “prison jumpsuit” to CEO Tony Hayward. While no one came down to accept the gift, ThinkProgress was covering the event and saw several BP employees watching from the safety of their 7th floor offices.

Protests at the local level — even ones that are nothing more than symbolic in nature — are also picking up. The Brevard County Manatees, the minor league Class-A Advanced Florida State League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, has officially changed the name of “batting practice” — known as “BP” for short — to “hitting rehearsal.” “We hope to send a message to the community that we are definitely worried with the pollution that is in the waters off the Gulf Coast and its potential impact on the beaches here in Brevard County,” said the team’s general manager.

Yesterday in Pensacola, FL — which is on the Gulf Coast close to the Alabama border and now has tar balls washing up on its beaches — about 30 protesters gathered outside of a local BP gas station for a two-hour demonstration, with signs and bumper stickers reading, “Boycott BP,” “BP Lies Pensacola Dies,” and Wake Up and Smell the Oil.” Some other protests at BP stations around the country:

– On May 30, more than 200 protesters “swarmed Jackson Square” in New Orleans to vent their frustration at BP, where speakers “lashed out” at the “slow effort to keep oil from hitting Louisiana’s coastline.” Many posters had “scathing messages” including “BP = $ over people” and “refuse to be LOSEiana anymore.”

– Over Memorial Day weekend, hundreds of protesters “covered in ‘oil’ or dressed like sea creatures” flocked to a New York City BP station to rally against the oil spill and “to keep motorists from filling up.” Protesters chanted “BP your heart is black, you can have your oil back.”

– On June 3, middle-school students from Illinois valley spent the day “on a stretch of public sidewalk” outside a BP stationshouting facts about the disaster” and chanting “agree with me, don’t buy from BP.”

Fifteen students in St. Cloud, MN “circled in front” of a BP gas station on Friday holding “painted signs” to show that “young people are doing something and they have a voice.”

– Over Memorial Day weekend, more than 20 protesters demonstrated outside a local convenience store in Charlottesville, VA. One protester urged the need for clean energy sources with “a placard touting fuel from hemp.”

Protests have also gone viral. Over 330,000 members have joined the Boycott BP Facebook group. Twitter’s BP Boycott has over 2,500 followers.

Many business owners are worried that these boycotts and protests may hurt their profits while not affecting the parent company. The vast majority of the 10,000 BP stations in the country and independently owned and operated.

While the company isn’t publicly addressing the boycott efforts, they may still end up affecting how BP operates. Consumers also boycotted Exxon stations after the 1989 spill in Alaska, and while the company ignored it publicly, Exxon has now “reduced its dependence on consumer sales, and the company is much more dependent on business-to-business sales than it was 20 years ago.” Eighty-one percent of Americans disapprove of BP’s response to the spill, and 64 percent believe the government should pursue criminal charges against those involved.

Americans overwhelmingly see the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico as a major environmental disaster, and most want the federal government to pursue criminal charges against BP and its drilling partners, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Public complaints against BP are twofold: Most give poor ratings to its reaction to the massive spill, and most blame the company and its drilling partners for taking unnecessary risks that could have caused the spill.

    By Jon Cohen

In the new Post-ABC poll, those who see the spill as a disaster overwhelmingly advocate criminal charges against BP and its partners, and altogether 64 percent of Americans say the government should pursue such legal action. Most Democrats (74 percent) and independents (67 percent) support criminal investigation; Republicans divide 50 percent in favor, 44 percent opposed.

Everyone can learn something from these middle-school students about what it means to be a good citizen of our country and our planet.

If the MSM will pick up on this more perhaps we can counteract BP’s propaganda campaign. HuffPo is reporting that the government is telling BP to stop restricting media access. We’ll see where that goes.

Hayward and BP don’t appreciate the depth of anger from the public. They are deluding themselves that this is merely a PR problem that can be managed. Obama needs to order BP to get the necessary skimmers to the spill or face nationalization. BP will continue to do the least it can and negotiate fines when the spill has receded from the headlines. The company understands nationalization and they would face the wrath of investors if the company’s assets were seized. If Obama gives them an ultimatum, they will move mountains to avoid the nationalization.

We need to do everything we can to support the people of the Gulf Coast. Boycotting BP products is hard because their products are everywhere, but definitely boycott anything with the BP name on it. Call your local teevee stations and complain about BP ads. Whatever you can think of to help — do it. This thing is going to get much much worse before it gets better.

  28. pete says:

Explosives aren’t the answer. Right now the oil is all spewing out of a pipe. We know where it is and, despite the difficulty in doing anything at such depth, there are many ways to cap a pipe. If they tried to implode the pipe with explosives, which would also take time because the explosives would need to be planted in shafts that intersect the existing well, we might face the possibility of the oil finding it’s way out through the fractured ground which could lead to it oozing forever.

Obama should Nationalize all of the BP oil wells in the US, and US waters; and seized their US bank accounts.

BP has billions of dollars in assets in the US, including equipment, cash, drilling rights, royalties, investments, buildings and a host of other tangible and intangible assets. The loss of assets in the US would be make a significant dent in the company. Even if the assets were not enough to cover all the liabilities, a judgment from a US court can be domesticated in the UK and other European countries. Once domesticated, the judgment would allow assets in the foreign countries to be seized. The inability to do business in the US would mean the loss of a major market for their oil and drilling rights.

  91. Xisithrus says:

In the late 1800’s, the citizens of Summerland, California, began producing the numerous springs of crude oil and natural gas that dotted their landscape. After drilling a large number of wells, these early oilmen noticed that those nearest the ocean were the best producers. Eventually, they drilled several wells on the beach itself. Then in 1887, one citzen, H.L. Williams came up with the idea of building a wharf and erecting the drilling rig on it. His first offshore well extended about 300 feet (90 meters) into the ocean. As expected, it was a good producer and before long the entrepreneurs built several more wharfs. The longest stretched over 1,200 feet (nearly 400 meters) in the Pacific.

By 1910, America had quickly turned to oil as its primary resource. The invention of the internal combustion engine boosted the consumption of gasoline. At the same time, Americans were discovering new and faster ways to retrieve oil. The steel cable was used in place of rope for cable tool drilling and by 1919, the first diamond drill was used.

Almost every year for the next ten years, technology advanced to tap into this precious resource. The valves and controls which gauged the flow of oil – nicknamed the Christmas tree – was developed in 1922, followed by the creation of drilling control instrumentation in 1925. Scientists also became involved with the search for oil and in 1926, modern seismology was developed.
    Moving Offshore

In the mid-1940s, significant changes in the oil industry were made as America was making its transition from a wartime to a peacetime economy. The petroleum industry witnessed the end of government controls on crude-oil prices, and the states began disputes over offshore water bottom ownership. There was an enormous public demand for oil and gas, and offshore exploration encountered challenges, such as underwater exploration, weather forecasting, tidal and current prediction, drilling location determination and offshore communications.

Despite the difficulties, Kerr-McGee Corporation drilled the first well from a fixed platform offshore out-of-sight of land in 1947. Its barge and platform combination was a major breakthrough in drilling-unit design for offshore use. This event marked the beginning of the modern offshore industry as it is known today. By 1949, 11 fields were found in the Gulf of Mexico with 44 exploratory wells.

and no environmentalists pushed them further out on the continental shelf.

    Goooooood evening TeeeePeeee!

(that was my robin williams impersonation!)

Just took a visit to reichstate, funny all the self flagellation about Obama’s poll numbers being lower than Bush’s Katrina. The nice thing about it is all it takes is a good lawsuit and a few jail terms for BP between now and November and we’ll see the part most people are angry with our great president about turn around and become a positive again.

    Hope you’re listening, Mr. President…

The funniest part is the same morons who dismissed the fact that Dumbya had a report about terrorists being determined to fly a plane into a building but dropped reading it in favor of “my pet goat” thinks the lack of a report about “BP ignored safety regulations and may precipitate the worst ecological disaster in U.S. history” means nothing. Seems our president was supposed to review 100% of everything Dumbya and the reich did within 30 days of becoming president and the failure to wipe out 100% of everything a reichwinger put in place in 60 days is a major failure (need I say that at reichstate we can find a healthy dose of “insert n-word here” code words?).

Soooo, what I gather this week is that the reichswine who cried for a year and a half about lack of bi-partisanship are angry because the scary black man actually was more bi-partisan than Dumbya, and that willingness to work with the other side and keep some of their efforts in place is makes him directly responsible of this ecological disaster (while equally dissolving them of any and all responsibility for their deregulation efforts).

That convoluted ignorance on the reich’s part deserves a huge *swig*!

Pass the bottle and share, friends!

P.S. who’s the racist troll so desperate for attention that he keeps talking to himself spouting hate filled ignorance completely lacking in any supporting proof?

It’s only fcuking money. I gave up this job three years ago to go to school and live on poverty level wages, and I will train someone else to take on this job before I return to school in the fall. So no, I’m not PROUD of earning a certain amount. It means nothing; it’s merely a means to an end. It’s only fcuking money.

But the troll cannot say the same. The troll doesn’t understand that money is not important in the world, and that’s why the troll will end his life alone, dis-satisfied, and bewildered. His children have only learned the value of money, not the value of people, hence he has become a means to an end — his children’s inheritance.

Revenue generated from the production of oil became the second-largest revenue generator for the country, after income taxes. The U.S. government played a part, by passing the U.S. Submerged Lands Act in 1953, which set the federal government’s title and ownership of submerged lands at three miles from the state coastline. The Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA) was also passed, which provided for Federal jurisdiction over submerged lands of the OCS and authorized the Secretary of the Interior to lease those lands for mineral development.

After the Santa Barbara Oil Spill in 1969, Congress passed several acts which spurred the development of oil spill regulation and research

Union Oil’s Platform A ruptured because of inadequate protective casing. 258. Marie says:

BP is the 4th largest corporation in the world….with a long history of buying off politicians.

BP’s genesis began with the discovery of oil in Iran in 1908 by William Knox D’Arcy and became the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. In 1923, Winston Churchill was secretly paid 5000 British pounds to lobby the British government in order to create a monopoly over Iranian oil. In 1951, the pro-Western Prime Minister was assassinated and the Iranian Parliament nationalized the oil industry by unanimous vote, and elected a new nationalist Prime Minister, Mossadeq. By 1953, the CIA, with British support, led a coup against Mossadeq and he was ousted.

In 1954 the Anglo- Iranian Oil Company changed its name to British Petroleum and became an international consortium that shared profits with Iran at a 50-50 split. The company was 40% owned by Iran, 40% owned by 5 American companies and 20% owned by Royal Dutch Shell and the French Petroleum Company. No Iranians were allowed on the Board of Directors or to audit the company. The 5 American companies include Exxon, Gulf Oil, Mobil, Standard Oil and Texaco; all of which were controlled, merged or or owned by parent companies affiliated with the Rockefeller family over time.
The provenance of later acquisitions and the creation of subsidiaries are intentionally complex, and it is unlikely that the Rockefellers relinquished control over their oil monopoly when it was broken up as a result of the Sherman Antitrust Act.
Oil cartels traditionally engage in price fixing. While BP is currently a publicly traded company, this does not mean that stockholders control the company.

In 1979 the Ayatollah Khomeini broke all contracts and gave 90% ownership to BP oil and Iran retained a 10% interest. In 1998, BP merged with Amoco (a subsidiary of Standard Oil), and in 2000, acquired ARCO.

  360. Xisithrus says:

Union Oil’s Platform A ruptured because of inadequate protective casing. The oil company had been given permission by the U.S. Geological Survey to cut corners and operate the platform with casings below federal and California standards. Investigators would later determine that more steel pipe sheating inside the drilling hole would have prevented the rupture.

Because the oil rig was beyond California’s three-mile coastal zone, the rig did not have to comply with state standards. At the time, California drilling regulations were far more rigid those implied by the federal government.

    Aftermath

In the spring following the oil spill, Earth Day was born nationwide. Many consider the publicity surrounding the oil spill a major impetus to the environmental movement.

Only days after the spill began, Get Oil Out (GOO) was founded in Santa Barbara. Founder Bud Bottoms urged the public to cut down on driving, burn oil company credit cards and boycott gas stations associated with offshore drilling companies. Volunteers helped the organization gather 100,000 signatures on a petition banning offshore oil drilling. While drilling was only halted temporarily, laws were passed to strengthen offshore drilling regulations. Union Oil suffered millions in losses from the clean-up efforts, payments to fishermen and local businesses, and lawsuit settlements. But maybe worse, the reputation of the oil industry was forever tarnished.

    In Their Own Words . . .

bp has managed to tarnish it again.

motormouth is just a sh*t stain on the underwear of life.

He was never loved as a child. His parents never hugged him or gave him attention. His sisters always beat the piss out of him. He was the kid in the neighborhood and at school who would be chosen last for kickball, baseball, basketball and football.

His teachers labeled him early on as a loser with no future. His one and only girlfriend dumped him for a black lesbian. His dog Fluffy purposely ran onto a busy highway to get away from it’s miserable life with motormouth.

As he got older he realized he was just a lonely, self loathing, irrelevant nobody, with a family who hated him and no friends other than the hitchhikers he has chained to his cellar wall.

The internet save his bleak and lonely life. He now can be someone other than a loser that he is. He can have a somewhat social life albeit a cyber one.

The guy is a loser through and through. His only friends these days are meth and his computer. The guy will one day, finally just realize what a shell of a human being he is and end his own pathetic life, we can only hope that in the process the little pussy doesn’t take others with him.

  514. Gary Herstein says:

Damn! I couldn’t type my announcement up fast enough!

Dear pathetically stupid Serial Liar Fake Dr. Hunt, Engineer Esq.: I realize your infantilism is without bounds, but it certainly hit a new low point by your self-righteously childish declaration that a person ought to feel “honored” pointing out something so monumentally obvious that even the potted plants grow weary of the fact:

You are far too stupid to waste time on in something like a debate.

You have no grasp of — I was going to say “basic logical principles,” but the simple and unavoidable fact of the matter is that the real answer is “anything.”

And yet your ego is so inconceivably out of proportion to your pathetically limited cognitive capacities, that you inflate yourself with the notion that it would be an “honor” to do what has been going on now, not merely since you’ve taken it upon yourself to waste peoples time by showing up at TP as you snivel and cower behind your various pseudonyms, but your entire pathetic existence: pointing out what a useless waste of life you are.

This, you posit, is an “honor.”

And, being as galactically stupid as you are, you’ve no concept of how unbelievably childish you once again prove yourself to be by such an egregious display of your total lack of even the most elementary meta-cognitive abilities.

By the bye — and this is something else I’ve already pointed out above — it is interesting to me that you voluntarily acknowledge yourself as the Serial Liar Fake Dr. Hunt, Engineer Esq. Being the mental void that you are, it simply never occurs to you to do other than respond to that title. For my part, I was actually intending to hold to the line of not engaging trolls directly. But when they so enthusiastically wallow in the lowest title you can throw out, the sense of amazement at the total absence of anything that might even generously be characterized as reflective thought does rather lead one to continue. You poke the sh!t-stupid brute with the electric cattle prod, and it turns around and asks for more. A very strange phenomenon, indeed.

But I used a lot of big words above, and you’re now just all at sea with confusion. So let me try to simplify it for any adults in your life who might have the patience to explain.

    You are a moron.
    You are a hypocrite.
    You are incapable of thinking.
You are nothing but an infantile, ranting ideologue.

You are incapable of anything like a real debate.

Why would any thinking being pretend otherwise?

So I deal with you in the only manner that provides some small measure of entertainment for me. I do not say, “As you deserve,” since the greatest kindness someone like you can ever hope or pray for is that you NEVER be treated as you deserve.

If God forbid we had another 9/11 type of an attack on our nation I bet 100% of the right wingers wouldn’t unite under Obama like America did under Bush, further proving that their party, racism and hatred is stronger than their love of country.

  565. USCKitty: Blame rapists, not rape victims says:

Oh yeah…that poll means less than OUR DOCTOR thinks it does…does he know why? Because when they did the poll for Katrina…most of the conservatives polled said they APPROVED of Bush’s handling (56%)…because they march in lockstep. The disapproval for Obama’s handling comes from both right-wingers who’ll disapprove of ANYTHING he does and liberals who say he hasn’t been tough enough on BP…Only

    From Motomark’s link

There’s partisanship in views of the federal response, with Democrats less critical of the Democratic-led government. Nonetheless, even among Democrats 56 percent rate the federal
response negatively. That rises to 74 percent of independents and 81 percent of Republicans.

Partisanship ran in precisely the opposite direction in views of the Katrina response under the Bush administration. Just 41 percent of Republicans rated that response negatively, rising to 64 percent of independents and 79 percent of Democrats.
    Negative ratings: federal response

    Deepwater Horizon Hurricane Katrina
    All 69% 62%
    Democrats 56 79
    Independents 74 64
    Republicans 81 41

In addition to the 7-point difference in negative ratings of the federal response to the oil spill vs. Katrina, there’s a 10-point difference in positive ratings – 28 percent for the government’s oil spill response, vs. 38 percent for its response to Katrina. That’s in part because 59 percent of
Republicans rated the response to Katrina positively, while just 40 percent of Democrats say the same about the current oil spill response.

June 7, 2010, New York – Today, the Center for Constitutional Rights issued the following statement in response to a new report by Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), Experiments in Torture: Human Subject Research and Evidence of Experimentation in the ‘Enhanced’ Interrogation Program. Download the report at http://phrtorturepapers.org.

Physicians for Human Rights has produced a powerful analysis of declassified documents which provide evidence that doctors and officials performed human experimentation and research on individuals in CIA detention, in violation of the Nuremberg Code. From calibrating sleep deprivation to refining waterboarding practices, the released documents indicate that health professionals illegally experimented on individuals in CIA secret detention. Looking at the evidence through this lens opens new and important avenues for the prosecution of torturers, particularly health professionals implicated in the creation of the torture program.

poor victims…you conservatives…Upon thee, fell the greatest calamity that heaven has bestowed upon any American…the liberal media…Thine policies and thine leaders would work to their utmost potential if it had not been for the liberal media sabotaging them.

  583. dbadass says:

Old man Dan still dead? So what happened to you that made you the broken shell of a man we see before us each day? Was that DDT as well or just piss poor parenting? Dad is embarassed by you isn’t he?

USCKitty-but the point is, if the media is handling the situations differently, the results will also be different. Can you imagine what the media would be doing if this disaster had happened under Bush?

They’re having a hard time with this story…it’s obvious they HAVE to report on it, but Obama’s dithering has NOT been made a prominent part of the “dialogue”. Still…the poll indicates that media protection of BO is NOT working.

Maybe that’s because we all trusted in BP’s bona fides…Obama included…and perhaps we were too misguided or foolhardy to do so. When it became clear that the Bush administration’s response to Katrina along with Nagin and Blanco’s had been severely under par, yes the media did its job…

Obama has time to show that he is willing to come down hard on BP…but until I see a liability cap removed, I will take his support for it with a grain of salt much like his support for ending DADT…

  587. USCKitty: Blame rapists, not rape victims says:

One thing we all must agree on, right or left, democrat or republican, liberal or conservative and that is that it’s apparently clear that we have become a country governed by corporations and if we the people of this country don’t stop with the partisan bickering and unite to take back our country from these thieves our country will be lost forever.

Amen…There is a problem for those who have the intellectual honesty to admit it and it’s that the two-party system has been broken and is nothing more than a corporate lovefest from both “sides.” Until we get away from trusting in the bona fides of corporations to our detriment, we will never break their hold. Until we get away from allowing corporate money to influence our elections and our legislation, then we will never break their hold.

I love how our doctor friend says that only the Democrats have a problem with big business and its stranglehold on Washington…Does he really believe that the Republicans will be the ultimate populist party once they return to power? Of course Intellectual honesty is important to academics, right?

  591. USCKitty: Blame rapists, not rape victims says:

Apparently someone does not understand the difference between using a teleprompter and actual cheating in class…It’s one thing to ask my friend, hey what’s the answer to #15 on a math test and it’s another to use a teleprompter. Hell, I guess those who make a powerpoint presentation and look at the screen to figure out what they’re going to say are cheaters as well…

  592. USCKitty: Blame rapists, not rape victims says:

but hey…someone who googles “Obama teleprompter” probably isn’t going to be intellectually honest anyway…

  593. Eugene Debs sponsered by the Church of the presumptious assumption says:

Along with the basic lies and abject stupidity we get from trolls like Chuckwood comes the long ago debunked LIES that are the base talking points the rightwing uses. They get PROVEN to be bullshit but morons like Chuckwood continue to recycle them anyway because they dont CARE if they are true or not. They only care that they attack someone on the left. My GOD Chuckwood is a stupid liar

  594. USCKitty: Blame rapists, not rape victims says:

    From our troll’s friend’s link…

President Barack Obama is facing criticism after using a podium and teleprompter to address the media in a sixth grade classroom.

President Obama, accompanied by Education Secretary Arne Duncan,

spoke to the media after a discussion with sixth grade students at Graham Road Elementary School in Falls Church, Virginia.

Wait, our troll friend said that Obama was “so stupid he can’t converse with 6th graders with out help”

Was our troll friend lying? Nah…our friend wouldn’t do that…he’s honest to a fault…

  595. Eugene Debs sponsered by the Church of the presumptious assumption says:

Obama didnt USE a teleprompter with the sixth graders. That is a LIE. Morons like Chuckwood dont care its a lie they will repeat it anyway

So Chuckwood like dhunt is a liar and a moron. Are there ANY rightwingnuts who arent liars and morons? If there are where are they?

  599. Eugene Debs sponsered by the Church of the presumptious assumption says:

Ok Chuckwood. You have been PUNKED and outed as a liar and a moron are you going to run away like the snivelling coward you are to pop up later and tell the same lies again?

  600. USCKitty: Blame rapists, not rape victims says:

oh man, Andrew Breitbart? You mean the guy who lies about how the media paints Republicans as bad and Al Qaeda as good?

    Nice…chuck…nice…

  601. Eugene Debs sponsered by the Church of the presumptious assumption says:

At least Chuckwood has the good sense to be ashamed of himself and run away when his lies are proven. dhunt would have stayed and pretended he was basically right because Obama uses a teleprompter and exists in the same universe as 6th graders

  602. USCKitty: Blame rapists, not rape victims says:

Chuck, friend…I have to give you credit…The only thing that interested me on Breitbart’s site was a MA in Military History delivered online…

    go to http://www.bls.gov/webapps/legacy/cpsatab15.htm

    check U-3 seasonally adjusted
    click on ‘retrieve data’
next page, choose from ‘1976 to 2010′ and ‘include graphs’, and click ‘go’.

And remember, national debt 200 years before Reagan totaled $0.9 Trillion. Twelve years later ( end of GHWBush) it was $4.1 Trillion. Clinton improved budget every year until it was record surpluses. The final budget that GW Bush was responsible for was minus $1.3 Trillion.

On Countdown, for some reason, Howard Fineman claimed that BP had bought the algorithm on Google’s site where non-ad results still pointed to BP’s websites, but looking at Google in both firefox and IE show mostly news sites about the gulf spill. I have no idea why Fineman claimed this when it is not true.

  614. Rodeskawler says:

Erin Burnett says that Geitner thinks that if corporations like Amazon, who is getting ready to build a warehouse in China, not America, can sell their products to the Chinese, this will help our economy.

Once again we need to distinguish between the millionaires’ economy, and the economy the rest of us have to endure.

Chinese people buying products produced in China through a warehouse located in China, is going to help our crappy unemployment here, right? It’s going to provide earning potential to regular Americans, right?

No. It is going to pad Amazon stock prices so millionaires can make larger dividends. It will may the dow look good for Amazon and that is about it. It will do nothing to create one job in America, whos unemployment is about 20%.

We really need to elect adults to Washington who will appoint adults to important positions.

These corporatists or fascists have no intention to promote a middle class here when they can rely on billions in communist dictatorships to buy their products and pad their stock prices.

We need leadership that is interested in promoting our economy, not the Chinese economy.

  615. Rodeskawler says:

What happened to the Obama promise that he was going to try to stop the tax incentives for transnational corporations to set up shop in China and build up their dictatorial, communist economy and military?

  616. Rodeskawler says:

Now his treasury chief appears to be counting on such nonsense to help fellow millionaires at the expense of America.

The oil spill is horrible and the loss of the 11 lives in the explosion is very sad. I support a full investigation into BP’s activities on both the civil and criminal levels.

That said, not every disaster can be prevented. For the near term we still need more oil and offshore drilling has generally been safe in most cases. I believe that we need to continue offshore drilling. Many observers have also pointed out that drilling is easier in more shallow waters. But the drilling has been pushed further and further offshore partly because of safety concerns. Perhaps this policy should be changed and drilling conducted closer to the shoreline.

“Perhaps this policy should be changed and drilling conducted closer to the shoreline.”

    Nervous, sidney jesus?
Has the waterline on your feet moved up a tad?

  620. Xisithrus says:

It’s because we value profit over life…we’ve always have…The owners of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory were ACQUITTED even though they had locked the fire escapes…Of course they had claimed they had not known…Apparently they did not want the workers “loafing…” Nowadays, a corporation who fcuks up our environment is more important than a woman who truly needs help. In our culture of blame and pointing fingers, we don’t lift much to help those whom we blame for bringing it on themselves…but we will move heaven and earth to protect those who have money and capital…
